If I play summoners rift, I never ever listen to music, because it's too distracting and (at least for me) audio clues in game are really important. Every once in a while I might play an ARAM while listening to music, which results in me either feeding, or completely vibing and destroying the enemy. Nothing in between lol.

If it's a game where you don't have to pay attention to sound or any sound cues, then yes I'd say music could be a good addition to have, otherwise I want to be able to focus on the game itself seeing as you can always listen to music at another time during the day.
If you're playing games at a competitive level, distracting yourself with music is evidently going to make you perform worse, it's just how it is. It might be that your friends just enjoys to play casually, or they're just attached when it comes to listening to music.

yeah none of us play super competitively, most of our time spent in games is for fun. of course we try to do our best to win, but our top priority is always having a good time!

Yes, I listen/watch youtube when I play, It helps me with my A.D.D but, as you might've noticed, im not the best player around.
In my opinion, if you feel like vibing and listening to music while playing, then it is totally fine, Go for it!

Remember, having fun is the best "rank" you can have in League of Legends.

that's super understandable, i do enjoy music when the normal league sounds just get too plain. but on the other side music and even chat distracts me so easily, i got talking about what a friend of mine wrote in chat and we both got so into it we didn't notice the enemy invading our jungler literally right next to us XD

Personally, with my Elo, it doesn't matter if I do or don't... I am as likely to bump into players who just ping because they think it's funny as I am to play with someone who knows what they are doing with them >.> I tend to avoid songs and stick to scores and keep it low on the off chance I actually do meet the latter.
