Why do people build Warmog's Armor on Garen?

I have seen a few guides that suggest Warmog's on Garen, but I don't understand why Garen needs Warmog's when he has Perseverance. Isn't Spirit Viasage good enough for HP regen? Seems like a waste to build Warmog's on Garen since Warmog's doesn't come with any armor or magic resist. Any other defensive option just seems better. Can anyone please explain this to me?

is quite inefficient the way it is. It's just 800 hp for a team fight for the cost of 3000. Other defensive items are better and it makes complete sense to not pick Warmog's. The guides you have checked are probably not updated.

I personally build warmog's as a last item but you seem to underestimate the item. Building Warmog's first is a bad idea as BotRK will wreck every hp that you have. It is smarter to get at least one armour item( with hp stats) and then build warmog's to back up the armour. I am a garen main and my hp regen with warmog's coupled with spirit visage and perseverance is usually above 250 per second. Which means-you enter a fight, tank damage, deal heavy damage, walk away for a few seconds and come back with more than half your max hp to finish off whoever is left in the enemy team. Warmog's is useless if all you do is go in and fight till you are dead. Move away from the fight when you reach like 100 hp or something to regen like mad. His sustain with this build is unrivalled except by the likes of Mundo.

But it's unnecessary in garen's case (at least 90% of the time). It takes only 3 seconds to charge at level 16, so by the time you get your warmog's passive you've already healed over half your hp. And there aren't many levels before 16 where you're at both 3k hp and had the gold to buy warmog's.

To top that off, it's too easy to shut down warmog's passive, whereas garen's perseverance lets you farm, for example, which makes the whole having to wait till you're full hp again actually an option (before that, even with warmog's it's not really better than going back to base). The point is, warmog is optimal late game, when garen already outclasses the passive by a longshot.

Ekki: It's not about Garen's passive being better than Warmog's passive, it's about making Garen's passive even more better. Tryndamere gets ad and crit as passive. Doesn't mean he stops building those -.-

First of all, first item is bad because you wouldn't have its passive. Only getting the 800 health isn't worth it, and you'll need at least one big item plus some more health before hitting the 3k hp needed to activate the passive.

I think the point is that garen doesn't need any more out of combat regen, since his passive is already better than warmog's (and after level 16, warmog's passive is unnoticeable).

Probably just because Warmog's Heart (Passive) is insane. That and the raw amount of HP it gives is great against teams that lack much %Health damage.

Honestly I believe it comes down to how the game is going and what you need to assist your build. When I play Garen, I build about two or three defensive items. This is usually enough to keep me tanky along with my w passive, runes, and masteries. Then if I don't need to build more defensive I'll build warmog's just cause the biggest counter to damage is health. The passive is nice but not the reason I build it. Plus, if I build Titanic Hydra Warmog's will make it hit harder.
