Introduction

Welcome
You've sought out this guide because you want to improve your guide writing skills in order to make your guide an internet success and by proxy, become an internet success yourself. That's what being a famous guide writer is about: helping millions of LoL players to the extent that you have a real notoriety in-game, where an enemy will exclaim in all-chat, "Are you the jhoijhoi?" or having friend requests every time you log in followed by, "Thank you so much for your x guide, it really helped me out!". The problem is, if you want to get to that stage, you have to work for it, and believe me, it's a lot of work.

Essentials of Guide Writing
Guide writing is 60% Effort and Dedication, 20% Networking and 20% Marketing. Think of these aspects as if they were a cyclic process, and while they are not totally proportional with each other, the more you put into each facet of guide writing, the higher success overall. In addition to the above triad, there is another... Your guide is going to go nowhere fast if it doesn't hit the high notes of Readability, Content and Viability; but we'll discuss all six theories as we come to them. You'll notice as you read that this guide is heavily backed by peer-reviewed articles and published works; concepts in this guide have been researched and all sources are in the reference chapter for further perusal.

My Promise to You
This is a guide aimed towards users who want to make a fantastic guide, but either lack the knowledge or skills necessary to do so, or want a gentle nudge (and the occasional whack) in the right direction. In this guide I will detail what makes a good guide and what makes a bad guide, but most important of all, I will make a bad guide for you, and analyse it so that you will never repeat the wrong-doings of a bad guide writer. Along the way, both you and I will learn humility, gain understanding, and hopefully by the end you will be well-equipped enough to make a terrific guide.

You Will Learn:
  • How to format your work (columns, lists, font/colour changes)
  • How to make your guide attractive (including: images, videos, coding)
  • How to convey important information
  • How to order your chapters
  • How to make a fantastic guide
  • What happens after you've released your guide

Onwards and Upwards
who am I?

So, if you find this guide helpful or if you end up using the coding templates, I would appreciate a link back to this guide so other MOBAFire members can benefit from it. Thank you verily!

Triad of Writing

Challenges of an Author
The weight of being an author is heavy; many do not fully comprehend or realise that someone, somewhere, has written what you're reading on the screen. That person, that author, could be you, that's why you're here. As a future author, especially one writing for an audience solely based on the Internet, you face three main challenges that you will have to overcome to make your guide here at MobaFire a success.

Effort & Dedication
Firstly, how much do you care? If you truly want to make the best Karthus guide, you need to care. You need to care enough to update your guide when the meta shifts, or when a new item becomes available that would suit Karthus perfectly. You will need to put in hours upon hours of effort to write the very first draft, let alone the "published" copy. You will need to be dedicated to perfecting your guide, improving it with every SAVE, VIEW, PUBLISH. If you're not willing to put effort and dedication into your guide, guide writing is not for you.

Tronto (2005) states there are four elements of care:
1. Attentiveness: Guide writing requires a recognition of others' needs - mainly, a reader's need to learn.
2. Responsibility: You have an obligation to the guide once you have created it.
3. Competence: You must follow through with adequate care and effort to maintain your guide and ensure a reasonable level of play on the Fields of Justice.
4. Responsiveness: Have an empathetic understanding of what your readers want and need, but not to the extent that you put yourself in their shoes (more on this later).

Networking
Secondly, no matter how much effort you put into your guide, your guide will be nothing without a support network. I highly recommend that you get to know your reader-base here at MobaFire before releasing a guide. Who is a prominent figure in the forums? Who is writing the most blogs? Who's guide inspired you to write your own? These people, if you befriend them, will form your initial network. Without them, you are relying on the votes of strangers to get your guide climbing the ranks.

Marketing
Thirdly, you are a brand. Everything you say and do at MobaFire is attributed to you and your guide(s). This occurs mainly through how you represent yourself; if you contribute to forum threads and other discussions, you are directly marketing your profile and in turn your guides. Not only by talking about your experiences with the champion you've written a guide for, but in off-topic discussions too, due to your signature, which would link to your guide. If you want your guide to be a presence at MobaFire, you need to be a presence at MobaFire. Go out of your comfort zone and comment on other guides, build a rapport with new people; sounds like networking? It is the other side of the coin.

Branching away from social networking into marketing is extremely advantageous. A theory called the "strength of weak ties" states that numerous weak ties lead to new information or insights (Granovetter, 1973) - as in, venturing further than your close friend circle for advice will reward you higher with opinions you may not have encountered before. It seems like common sense, but you'd be surprised how many people do not utilise services available to them to increase their chances of exposure and improvement.

Facets of Guide Writing

Challenges of a Guide Writer
The previous chapter was a generalisation of writing. This chapter focuses on guide writing in particular; what facets or aspects of guides make them successful? What's the difference between a guide at 56% and a guide at 92%? What do you need to do to beat the other guide authors aspiring to be in the #1 spot? What gets your guide scouted and featured at MobaFire? How do you get people to read your guide over all the other guides? Read on.

Readability
The the average attention span is 8 seconds and most teenagers and adults are unable to the sustain attention on one thing for more than the 40 minutes (Cornish & Dukette, 2009). An average web page contains around 500 words; only 28% of the that content is actually the read. Prime example: every "the" I had after the first one didn't need to be there - did you notice? What does this mean for you as a guide writer trying to convey how to effectively play a complicated League of Legends champion? It means you need to keep your reader hooked. This can be achieved in a myriad of ways, and readers will automatically appraise your guide by analysing your:

+ Utilisation of resources available to you (coding templates etc)
+ Grammar, punctuation and spelling
+ Aesthetic appeal (graphic art, colour etc)

In short: If your guide is a wall of text, the only person you are letting down is yourself. If you can keep your readers entertained via visuals, videos and formatting, your readers are benefiting from the information you have so painstakingly collected for them.

Further Tips

Content
If you're looking for your guide to be one of the highest rated on MobaFire, you need to have good content. Readability is important, but if you write in clear and concise words about absolute *****, no one is going to upvote your guide. You cannot afford to bore your readers with useless trivia. You cannot afford to anger your readers with useless builds. Therefore:

+ Know the champion you're writing about
+ Expose trade secrets, tips and tricks
+ Inform, entertain and persuade us

If you're going to write the absolute minimum and tell people that "AD is good on AD champions", you're going to get downvotes. Take the time to explain what you actually mean when you claim that "Deathcap increases AP" - does that MEAN anything to a fresh summoner, sitting on level 5, reading a MobaFire guide? Don't spoon feed us, but give us a delicious three course meal.

Further Tips

Viability
And of course your guide could be the prettiest, most entertaining and in-depth guide around, but if it's not viable in any sense of the word, you better hope Lagger doesn't find it. Support Ashe? Sorta viable. Will the idea become the top strategy for Ashe anytime soon? Probably not. If you want your guide to preform well, you have to write to the meta.

+ Statistics speak 1000 words
+ If no one else is doing it, there's probably a reason why
+ Write about what you know works

This doesn't mean you can't experiment and try new things. I'm not discouraging you from rocking ADC Malz, or support Nasus. I'm just informing you that active MobaFire members have a strong view of "viability", and they will downvote anything out of the ordinary (ask NicknameMy). So tldr; either have the statistics there to prove viability, or use an actually viable build.

JhoiJhoi's Bad Karthus Guide

Don't Try This at Home
Below is possibly the most painful (and hilarious) thing I've ever had to write; I basically wrote this Bad Karthus guide by disregarding everything I mentioned in the above chapters. Why? Studies have shown that if given an example of what is considered undesirable by the general public, citizens will avoid making the same mistakes. To the left I've written an analysis of why the Karthus guide is bad and/or given a short explanation of how the section could be improved. This Bad Karthus guide will be turned into something beautiful, I promise. In the next chapter you will see the difference between a Bad Karthus guide and a Good Karthus guide.

JhoiJhoi's Bad Karthus Guide

Analysis

+ 1337 spaek
How can you be expected to be treated seriously when you are using numbers in words, neglecting grammar and committing atrocious spelling mistakes?

+ inviting negativity
By assuming your audience is going to react negatively to your guide, you are creating a self-fulfilling prophecy, wherein the reader will want to comment harshly or downvote. Avoid mentioning rank or voting unless you are of high elo or well-established.

Introduction

hi evry1 this is my first guide on mobafire so please dont be mean and please upvote my guide for the hard efford i did. karthus is an awesome hero because he doesnt die when he dies because of his passive Deathly Flies. but i will talk about that later. karthus is my fav hero and i play him a lot, but this isnt a ranked guide so dont try it in ranked because im not level 30 yet so i havent had a chance to play ranked but i understand ranked is really hard and karthus doesnt do so well because the enemy team might have soraka and sorakas ultimate, Swish, complotley countertargets karthuss ult, Reqcriem which i got a pentakill with once in a co-op vs ai game. that moment was so funny.

anyway, i will now get on with the guide, and i hope you all enjoy this awesome guide that i made. i put a lot of efford into it so please dont be mean and dont downvote it until you try it. if you want to troll go troll somewhere else because i worked hard on my guide and put in a lot of efford.
+ redundancy
The author spends a lot of time repeating herself; one of the earliest snippets of advice I was given as a new guide writer was "waffle less". Clearly I've thrown that tidbit out the window for the sake of this guide, but you have no such excuse with your guide.

+ order
Current structure of this "guide" makes no sense. Traditionally you'll want to cover everything about the champion outside of the game before dealing with in-game gameplay.

Teamfights

in teamfights karthus should stay back and put his Lake of Waste on to the enemies head. Lake of Waste always lands where ur mouse is so make sure you are pointing your mouse at the enemy person and not yourself because then the Lake of Waste will land on yourself and do no damage, and we dont want that because you want to put Lake of Waste on to the enemies head.

if you are going to die as karthus go right in the middle of the battle to make sure that your aOe is in the middle of the battle to hurt as many of the enemy persons as much as possible and when you die you dont die (i said this earlier in my intro and i wont talk about it much now until i get to my skills section where i also describe what Reqcriem does in my skills section) so then your aOe and Lake of Waste will hurt the enemies. also dont forget to use Wall of Gain because that slows the enemy persons and that might help your team with their teamfights once you are dead even though youre not dead because of your passive Deadly Flies.
+ viability
Unless your guide is deliberately gimmicky with a strategy that happens to work well, it's doubtful that you'll ever be running a combination like Revive + Smite - that sort of combo was back on roaming Evelynn.

+ unnecessary info
Don't talk about alternative pathways you never take. There's no point. By giving those alternatives the light of day, the reader sub-consciously thinks about them.

Summoner Spells

i take revive and smite. revive so i can go back to the battle really quickly after i die, and smite because i can kill a cannon with it and that gets me so much gold by the end of the game it is awesome to see them die instantly with smite ^^

sometimes i take heal so i dont die, and if i am not mid sometimes i will take ignite and use it all the time for the extra 10AP i get when it is on cooldown.

summoner spells i dont get are:
rally because its stupid
promote because it doesnt existence anymore
fortify because only tanks should get fortify and karthus is not a tank he is a caster and thats why i build him ap and thats why i get ignite sometimes for the extra ap with the mastery.
+ formatting
haha, oh jhoijhoi, you so silly ^^ We all know Lifesteal Karthus is a terrible idea, so let's talk about something else. Remember, whilst viability and content are important aspects of a guide so to is readability. Consider using BBCode to liven up a wall of text. For instance a simple Doran's Blade really breaks up the monotony of text.

+ explanations
Telling the reader the stats of an item is useless. As mentioned earlier, tool-tip information is easily accessible. Readers want to know why an item is chosen, what it can be used for etc. For instance, Statikk Shiv; everyone knows movement charges up the lightning proc on attack. Something a reader may not know is "you can finish off low-health enemies out of range by attacking a minion near them - the chain lightning may reach them and kill them" - this is valuable knowledge.

Items

my items are a bit wierd i know but it works so good because of all the life steal. i hit things with my auto attack and i get back almost all my health in one hit!!!!!

so you start with dorans blade and go mid. we want dorans blade for the lifesteal coz we will be hitting the creeps to get back any health we loose to enemy persons.

after dorans we want fast boots because karthus is very slow and when we die and then come back we want to revive and move really fast back to the lane so we dont lose xp

then we get the item that will make karthus op. hextech gunrevolver is the best item in the game. dont worry about its active i never use it, its useless. with hextech gunrevolver i heal back so much like with my auto attacks its amazing!!!

but it is not enough! we need more lifesteal on karthus! so then i get the bloodfrisker for the damage and then wiggly latrine for the free wards. i'll show u my warding areas later on in this guide.

normally the game ends around this time, but if the game continyes for you then next get more lifesteal with starks fever because we need the attack speed. also, it gives good aura to teammates. which is why we also want Will of the Arachnids because it also gives good aura to teammates. your team will love you for the wards from wiggly latrine and the 2x auras from starks fever and will of the arachnids. i promise.
+ content
Unless you're a member of C9, you have no excuse for writing a guide under 1000 words. Take your time to explain your reasoning behind your choices. And obviously don't write a guide if you can't populate it with content - please have a working knowledge of the game!

Masteries

i go full offense tree because we want as much damage as possible. pretty self explanatory.

Runes

i have no ip to buy runes so i put the ones i do have in there.
+ aesthetics
While it's admirable that jhoi tried to add visual appeal with some graphics, it's clear she screwed up. Some tips regarding graphics:

1. Ensure it's relevant
2. Ensure it's understandable
3. Ensure it fits

Tiny tiny graphics with washed out colours of chai pumpkin lattes will not boost your guide's chances of getting upvotes. Though you may attract some random Starbucks fans.
Warding with Wiggly Lantrinethis is where i ward. sorry that the picture is small i trie dto make it fit on the page. also, the colors are hard to see but you can get the idea of where to put the Wiggly Wards.
+ concise
You could lump this under "don't waffle" and "don't be redundant". There's only so much you can say about an ability, item, mastery etc. If you've run out of things to say about it, stop. This section could be vastly improved by pruning out the doubled information, and either replacing it with new information, or keeping it short and sweet.

Skills Explanation

passive: Deathly Flies - it makes you not to die
skill 1: Lake of Waste - it is a red dot that kills things, and enemies when you put it on an enemies head but be aware because it is on ur cursor so make sure it is on the enemies head and not on you because you want to hurt the enemies so the cursor needs to be on the neeemies head
skill 2: Wall of Gain - it is a wall that slows enemey persons down
skill 3: Defile - it is the aOe move that is good to use when u are dead
skill 4: Reqcriem - this is the huge damage red thing on the enemies head (no not Lake of Waste) that does so much damage i got a pentakill in a bot game it was awesome!!!!
+ bias
There is a thin line between opinion and fact when it comes to guide writing. Sometimes it doesn't matter, but try not to let your own bias flavour your guide. Ensure whatever you're writing is relevant; for instance, is "xxx is fun to play" really a pro?

Pros / Cons

Pros:
- karthus is fun
- he doesn't die!!!!!
- he has big damage, specially with life steal!

Cons:
- he has low health (but thats okay because we take revive and can get back to the fight really quickly)
- his Lake of Waste is hard to land because it goes where your mouse is so make sure you aim it at the enemies head because if you use it and the mouse is on you then you get the red dot and the enemy doesn't get hurt :(
+ ending your guide
There are many ways to end a guide. Asking for upvotes is a no no. Asking for feedback is a yes. Thanking viewers for reading is a nice touch. Giving a brief summary of your guide can be beneficial. Just remember that the conculsion is the last thing that will be read. Leave a good impression.

Conclusion

well theres my guide, i hope you liked it very much. pls dont downvote because i put in a lot of efford, okay!

guide written by me, JHOIJHOI!!!!! dont steal!

Jhoijhoi's Good Karthus Guide

Do Try This at Home
Below is what the Bad Karthus guide could be, if you read through the rest of this guide and apply the knowledge you learn. This example guide is a good start; if you can get your head around the coding and formatting in this example, your own guide will be visually good. Viability is another matter ;) Now behold my Good Karthus guide!

JhoiJhoi's Good Karthus Guide

Introduction

Hi everyone, I'm JhoiJhoi, and this is my Good Karthus Guide. I worked hard to make this guide the best I could, and I would appreciate any and all feedback that you guys may provide. (Team Two is the correct Cheat Sheet for my Good Karthus Guide) Karthus is a fantastic champion, and he is by far the most fun - because you can kill steal and kill secure with his ultimate, Requiem.

Without further ado, I present to you, my dear readers, my excellent Karthus guide. I put a fair amount of effort into this guide, so I do implore you to reconsider any downvotes pending the actual trial and testing of my guide that I imagine you are planning to do. And above all, thank you for taking the time to read this Good Karthus Guide.

  • Greater Quintessence of Health: With these, Karthus is not as squishy, and thus less likely to become First Blood. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.
  • Greater Mark of Magic Penetration: The Magic Penetration is useful for most of Karthus' skills, as he is an AP Caster. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat.
  • Greater Glyph of Cooldown Reduction: Cooldown Reduction is essential for early kills with Requiem. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.
  • Greater Seal of Mana Regeneration: Spamming Lay Waste may cause quick mana depletion, so mana regeneration is a solid choice. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.

Summoner Spells

Flash: Is a great Get Out of Jail Free card. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.

Ignite: Just that lil' bit of damage to finish them off. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.

Teleport: Great for getting around. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.

Ability Explanation

  • Death Defied: This passive keeps Karthus alive after death, which allows him to contribute from the grave to a teamfight.
  • Lay Waste (Q): This spammy skill is your key to farming and harrasing as Karthus. It is automatically on Smart Cast, so the spell always lands where your cursor is. You may like to play around with it in a practise game before commiting yourself to a normal game.
  • Wall of Pain (W): Is an incredible slow that virtually cripples the movement speed of any enemy who walks through it.
  • Defile (E): This is your AoE skill that deals Damage over Time. It is imperative to turn this on in teamfights and leave it on if you die. Enemies often forget you are still "alive" and will stand in its effect, making their health bars drop rapidly.
  • Requiem (R): haha, the best ultimate in the game for Kill Stealing, Kill Securing and guarenteeing Pentakills. Use this whenever an ally says, "Low health enemy!", and you will get the kill :)

Teamfights

In teamfights Karthus should stay back and use Wall of Pain to slow the enemies. Then he should place Lay Waste in the direction an enemy is fleeing, or in the middle of the teamfight.

If you die as Karthus ensure that you turn on Defile to AoE burn the enemies fighting around your Death Defied reanimated corpse.

Warding The Map

This is where you and your team should sight ward.
  • Yellow: Vital to protect the jungler on your team
  • Blue: For protection depending on which lane you're on
  • Red: To guard Dragon and Baron
  • Orange: In order to Counter-Jungle

Summary

Karthus is an extremely fun champion to play, even though he is hard to get the hang of. If you have any comments, questions or queries about my guide, please don't hesitate to ask any questions.

Upvote if you liked the guide, and only downvote if you feel it is absolutely necessary. If you do downvote, please inform me of why, and perhaps I can rectify any mistakes I have made.

Happy Kill "Securing" with Karthus!

Navigating this Guide

Let's Get Started
You've read about the three challenges of an author. You've explored the three most important specifics of guide writing. Your eyes have bled reading my Bad Karthus guide. You have rejoiced and had your faith in humanity restored by my Good Karthus guide. Now you're eager to learn the tricks of the trade; how to make a "Good" guide. Below is a table of contents. The following chapters are in order of coding difficulty, followed by premade coding templates for you to test, use or adapt.

Text Effects

Many of you will have noticed the above bar when commenting on MobaFire or writing guides. You can use the in-built tools to do pretty much 90% of what this guide teaches regarding coding. When you "Quick Reply" to something, you are not presented with the above toolbar; it is up to you if you want to learn the behind-the-scenes coding.

Simple Text Effects
b, i, u, s - Creates bold, italic, underlined, or strike-through text. To achieve these effects, simply add the desired letter before the text you would like to change, as seen to the right. Emphasis is used to add distinction between objects and plain text. We want the reader to pay attention at a particular idea, or thought.

Optional Text Effects
Color, SuperScript, SubScript - Additional text effects can help convey information or create style within a paragraph. Use colour sparingly - consider those annoying flashing advertisments that scream you're the 1 trillionth visitor; these ads annoy you, just the way overusing colour would annoy a reader.
SuperScriptSub

[sup]Super[/sup][color=#ff0000]Script[/color][sub]Sub[/sub]

Additional Text Effects
Headings - Like colour, use these sparingly. There are useful for breaking up text to indicate a change in direction within a chapter, or for title purposes. Each heading automatically adds an enter space after it.

Heading 2

[h1]Heading 2[/h1]
Font Size - Like headings, this command changes the text size. Unlike headings, using this command does not give you a direct enter space after use. The size command allows for a greater range of sizes.
Size 6

[size=6]Size 6[/size]
Font Type - You are not restricted to using MobaFire's standard font. You can use other standard fonts, like Times New Roman, Arial and Georgia; you will have to test which fonts work though!
Calibri

[font=calibri]Calibri[/font]

URL Masking
URL Masking is great. Long strings of meaningless jibberish isn't fun to look at. So instead of http://www.mobafire.com/league-of-legends/build/ashes-to-ashes-67331, we want to write Ashe's to Ashes.

WikiCode

Linking to MobaFire's Database
The most common form of code you will see used on MobaFire are links to the database. This sort of wiki is easy to implement. Add double square brackets to any item, champion, ability, summoner spell, rune or mastery to achieve this effect. Capitalisation isn't necessary.
Doran's Blade

[[doran's blade]]

Icon-Only Links
The second most common form of code you will see used on MobaFire are varying sizes of wiki icons. These can be used to start a paragraph, indicate a champion/item, and more. The possibilities are endless.

[icon=soraka size=50]

Pulling Data from your Cheat Sheet
You can embed build information in any comment on the site, and in your build description. You can do this by using the separate builder tools to get a link to a custom setup, or you can use it in your description to automatically pull build information down into the description without typing it out again.

Formatting Techniques

Spoilers

Throughout this guide you will have noticed occasional spoilers. These nifty tools allow you to conceal a large amount of text, images or film. I use them when the information I want to provide is too in-depth to expect the casual reader to read.
Code:
[spoiler]Shhh! [/spoiler]
Effects:
Spoiler: Click to view

Line Dividers/Separators/Rules

Throughout this guide you will have noticed the white line underneath the titles for each section. I call these "line dividers", they can also be known as "rules" or "separators". Use these to separate paragraphs of text when necessary, as they can act as a chapter break. Feel free to use the ones I created for my own personal use; they're the coloured ones below.
Code:
---- OR [rule]
Effects:

OR

Alternatively, you can use table rules, like the ones I've been using throughout this guide. The coding for said table rule is:
[table][tr][td bgcolor=#0080ff padding=1 width=705][/td][/tr][/table]

Indentation

The ability to "indent" or in other words "tab" paragraphs. Indents "stack", so using multiple indents will push the text further and further to the right. If you do not close off an indent tag, it produces a cascading effect, as seen below.

Code:
[indent]Format: Good formatting includes using coding like Columns, Lists, and Font Effects to emphasise or draw attention to important aspects of your guide.[/indent]

Effect:
Format: Good formatting includes using coding like Columns, Lists, and Font Effects to emphasise or draw attention to important aspects of your guide.

Code:
[indent][icon=ashe size=50] [indent][icon=syndra size=50] [indent][icon=skarner size=50][/indent]
Effect:

Lists

Lists can be used to... list things. I personally don't use lists often, but they can have their uses. To make a numbered list, simply add "=1" to the end of the word "list" in the coding tag.
Code:
[list] [*] Information [*] Information [*] Information[/list]
Effects:
  • Information
  • Information
  • Information

Columns

I have used multiple columns throughout this guide, and to be honest, it's the most fiddly formatting technique due to MobaFire's lack of space between columns. You need to manually create your own space between columns, either via invisible text (<highlight that blank space), indents, or using the width parameter.
Code:
[color=black]Invisible text![/color]
Effects:
I'm AMAZING!

Columns Example: Width Parameters

Code:
[columns] [nextcol width=250]This is one column. [nextcol width=30] [nextcol width=250]This is another. [nextcol width=30] [nextcol width=250]And last one...[/columns]

Effect:
This is one column. This is another. And last one...

Columns Example: Indent

Code:
[columns]This is one column. [nextcol][indent]This is another.[/indent] [nextcol][indent]And last one...[/indent][/columns]

Effect:
This is one column.
This is another.
And last one...

Columns Example: Invisible Text

Code:
[columns][color=black]SPACESPACE[/color] [nextcol]This is one column. [nextcol][color=black]SPACESPACE[/color] [nextcol]This is another. [nextcol][color=black]SPACESPACE[/color] [nextcol]And last one...[/columns]

Effect:
SPACESPACE This is one column. SPACESPACE This is another. SPACESPACE And last one...

Creative Use of Columns

Code:
[columns] [nextcol width=230][center][icon=boots of speed size=50][/center] [[boots of speed]] + 3x [[health potion]]s are the standard opening items on ADCs as they give you a movement speed boost and 450 effective health. [nextcol width=30] [nextcol width=230][center][icon=doran's blade size=50][/center] As the ADC, you're going to want to do some damage, take some damage, and heal from some damage. Doran's Blade returns life (HP) on hit, allowing trades. [nextcol width=30] [nextcol width=230][center][icon=phage size=50][/center] There are only a few ADCs who can benefit from an early Phage. [[ezreal]] is one of them, and [[corki]] is another. This item is famous for it's kiting ability.[/columns]

Effect:

Chapter Organisation (ToC)

As you may have noticed, JhoiJhoi's Bad Karthus Guide was poorly organised. She went from her Introduction, to Teamfights, to Summoner Spells etc etc etc. The guide structure was all over the place. It is very easy to structure your guide in a way that will maximise the potential of the information you are trying to convey. Read more about structure and other great tips at Guide Basics .

Structure One

This structure allows for continuity and ease of reading, it focuses more on an in-depth presentation of information.
  • Introduction
  • Pros / Cons
  • Masteries
  • Runes
  • Summoner Spells
  • Champion Abilities
  • Items
  • Gameplay
  • Summary
  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Change Log

Structure Two

This tells the reader everything about the champion before specifications. It is more flexible in terms of information display.
  • Introduction
  • Pros / Cons
  • Champion Abilities
  • Counters / Synergies
  • Masteries, Runes & Summoner Spells
  • Core Items
  • Situational Items
  • Gameplay
  • Summary
  • Frequently Asked Questions

Custom Table of Contents

Once you've got your chapter order all in place, you may want to consider bypassing MobaFire's official Table of Contents and making your own. Many popular guides utilise a custom ToC to great effect. Many thanks to Astrolia's ToC Guide! Here's how:

1.

Put all of your guide contents in one chapter
Mobafire won't automatically generate chapters for you if there's only one chapter. So, to make a custom table of contents, first put all of your guide content in one chapter. You can make your own chapters then by setting anchors.

2.

Set anchors at places in your guide content
Anchors allow you to set a position in your text that can be linked directly. This is best used with headers in your guide in combination with the "goto" tag to create a table of contents. Anchors can be anything: text, images, symbols.

Example:
[anchor=nameofanchor][h1]DesiredChapter[/h1]
This anchor is connected to the goto tag below. Click me to go back down!

3.

Set goto tags that jump to your anchors
"goto" tagging is similar to URLs but links specificity to an anchor you created elsewhere on the same page. For example, if you had [anchor=conclusion] near the end of your guide, you could put [goto=conclusion]Conclusion[/goto] at the top to link directly to the bottom without reloading the page.

Example:
[goto=conclusion]Conclusion[/goto]
This goto link is connected to the anchor above. Click me to test!

4.

Put it all together and play test
You're not going to know if it works unless you test it. Play around with this template below.

Premade Coding Templates

Sharing's Caring
As promised, if you've made it this far, you now have access to various premade coding templates for you to test, use or adapt; simply pick which pieces you like the look of and build your guide around them!

You'll probably notice that a few of the templates come from my Good Karthus guide, however, there are plenty of templates that you have probably seen around MobaFire used in top rated guides. The original creators are credited at the top of each chapter; if you wish to send them praise, that's how you can find them.

If you do end up using any of the below coding templates, or have found this guide useful, I'd appreciate a +1 on this guide so it can help other people out :)

Champion Introduction by jhoijhoi

Hi everyone, I'm JhoiJhoi, and this is my Good Karthus Guide. I worked hard to make this guide the best I could, and I would appreciate any and all feedback that you guys may provide. (Team Two is the correct Cheat Sheet for my Good Karthus Guide) Karthus is a fantastic champion, and he is by far the most fun - because you can kill steal and kill secure with his ultimate, Requiem.

Pros/Cons by jhoijhoi

Pros

+ Long ranged poke
+ Brush reveal
+ AoE slow
+ Healing reduction
+ Attack speed steroid
+ Quick movement speed
Miss Fortune is a great pick in solo queue. While she doesn't have an in-built escape, Make it Rain + Strut allows her to make quick get-aways if ganked. Her duelling potential is huge due to Impure Shots, halving the effectiveness of sustain supports like Soraka. Most important when considering Miss Fortune, is her team utility. She brings an AoE slow, high damage + long ranged poke and healing debuff.

Cons

- Poor late-game
- Susceptible to CC
- AP ratios
- Cast time on ult
- Interuptable ult
- Not a crit-based champion
As per all champions, Miss Fortune has her strengths, and her weaknesses. Compared to other ADCs, MF's late game can be considered subpar due to the mechanics of her ultimate. It's interruptable, it's got a cast time, it's static, it's easily avoidable/Flashable, it falls off late game in damage. Additionally, she's got some useless AP ratios on Make it Rain and Impure Shots. Lastly, she isn't crit-based. This is a detriment as many other ADCs will be building crit and dealing critical strikes of more than 500 damage per hit. It's hard to compete with that sort of damage output.

Tips and Tricks
  • Try and only use your Q when you are attacking enemy heroes, buffs, dragon.
  • Turn on Frost Shot when you are chasing or running away. Turning around and smacking them with 1 auto-attack will slow them right down.
  • Always have Frost Shot toggled on during team fights.

Skill Explanation by LameoGamer

Draw a Bead Increases your Attack Range as you level. Being able to comfortably sit behind your teammates and snipe is great. However, this passive also brings a negative consequence in that your early-game range is mediocre at best. The need for leveling for range is one of the many reasons why Mid-Lane is the best for Tristana.

Rapid Fire Increases your Attack Speed by a percentage. Attack speed on steroids. This ability is essential for mid-game and late-game fights, solo or team. This greatly increases your DPS and allows you to perhaps take down multiple turrets with only one or two waves of creep rapidly.

Rocket Jump Jumps to target location, dealing splash damage and slow at land spot. Your initiator, escape, and chase skill. Mastering this skill and its high utility is essential in being effective with Tristana. Key things about this skill are that you can jump over walls, enemies are slowed upon being hit, and its cooldown refreshes after a kill or assist.

Q: Is this the best set-up for Vayne?
// Well, to be honest, Vayne is very versatile. I seriously wasn't aiming for alliteration just then :P Basically I like going 6+ into defense for the survivability. The utility tree is pretty good for AD champions now too. One could go full offense, or more survivability, or a whole lot of utility, it's up to you.

space
Tier 1 - 3 in Good Hands as you get more out of three points spent there over Perseverence . The 4th point goes into Perseverence as we need it to proceed down the tree.

Tier 2 - 4 in Awareness and as I had stated before, we don't want to indirectly cripple ourselves by getting that CDR later in the tree, so also grab 3 points in Expanded Mind which also helps you not only early on in the game, but does a subtle but noticeable snowball throughout the game.

Tier 3 - 1 in Greed will help you with all the expensive items that we need. 3 in Meditation . Now this mastery is quite amazing, it works well early on especially with our Doran's Ring. As we may or may not be getting buffs depending on our team comp just take the 1 in Utility Mastery .

Tier 4 - This tier is what makes Kayle. Max out Quickness and put the point into Blink of an Eye as well.

Tier 6 - lastly, for the 21st point, place it in Presence of the Master to further reduce that Flash CD.

Greater Mark of Magic Penetration is the go to Rune choice for almost every AP Champion when it comes to Marks because usually all of their damage is Magic. So you're up against Ashe. Be wary of her first hit guaranteed critical strike when coming to lane; that coupled with a Volley to the face can easily half health you. Ensure you are not caught out of position, as Frost Shot will cripple your chances of escape. Remember that she can scout brushes from a distance with Hawkshot, foiling ganks. Lastly, try and use your Flash after she has used ECA; ECA is her only form of CC, so escaping it can often mean escape if you Flash out of range of her autos.

FAQ by jhoijhoi

Frequently Asked

Answers

Q: What Summoner Spells should I take? // Flash, Cleanse, Ignite, Exhaust and Heal are the best defensive/offensive Summoner Spells on Ashe, and it's up to personal preference on which you'd rather get. If you are not yet level 12, pick up Ghost and Heal.

Q: Why is Ashe a viable choice? // In ranked play, she is frequently chosen due to her powerful initiate, her utility in terms of Hawkshot, and the crippling slow she provides when chasing. She is good at low elo, but very difficult to play correctly at high elo. She needs a team that will work with her and carry her until she can carry the team.

What Now?

The Next Step
This is the untold story of what happens after you've released your guide... So you've just released your first guide, aptly titled, "THE BEST SIVIR GUIDE EVAR: PROS ONLY"; you've probably tried to follow everything in this guide - the whole viability/content/readability thing. You've also incorporated a whole bunch of different coding templates and your guide looks amazeballs. You hit the refresh button every few minutes, anxiously waiting for the first vote, the first comment, the first sign of criticism. After about 24 hours of sitting in front of the computer, and having broken the F5 button, you finally receive your first vote.

... except it isn't what you expected. After those countless hours reading this guide, writing the content and then squeezing all that written stuff into coding, your first vote is a downvote (this won't happen to everyone, in fact, maybe it's your 3rd vote that is a downvote... maybe it's your 5th vote). The first thing to do is to close your browser. Do not reply directly after reading this downvote. Wait a few minutes, go have an icecream, pluck your eyebrows, pwn some bots in a Co-Op vs AI game - whatever.

After you have cooled down, reopen your browser. Read the comment again, and try to read it from their perspective. For example, this could be their comment:

RandomUserOne wrote: "I don't like the build. Why would you get Mannamune on Sivir? That's stupid. Also, your masteries are really ****, 30 into Offense?! Your runes look okay, but you shouldn't be using mana regen seals on an ADC. I also couldn't read your guide because there were so many errors. And god, it's so ugly, you totally failed coding school. -1 for now."

Whoooooah. Hold your horses. Don't get mad! Yes, this is your baby, your pride and joy, and they shat all over it. Don't sweat it. Calm down and read it again, actually read it. Let's go over their points.

I don't like the build. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about comments like these. If the voter doesn't like the build, then they don't like the build. It does not matter if all the pros use this build. It does not matter if you have a 99% win rate with this build. No amount of facts in the world will change someone's opinion. They just didn't like the build. Oh well, that's their loss, isn't it? You'll have to ignore this part and look for the constructive criticism in their comment.

Why would you get Manamune on Sivir? That's stupid. First consider their comment. Why would you get Manamune on Sivir? Think it over. If you have a good answer, write it down. In a civil voice, " Manamune is a very underestimated item. It is a fantastic item early game, and it is quite cheap (only 2100 gold) for the statistics that come with it. I chose Manamune as Sivir's first item because early game we want to be harassing the enemy as much as possible with Boomerang Blade. Tear of the Goddess helps us with this spamming. And if you're unlucky enough to be up against a spammy caster, you'll be able to use her Spell Shield more often and not worry about mana."

All you're doing is replying to their comments in the most civil way possible. By replying this way, you're showing other viewers that you can handle criticism, and that you can reason effectively about the decisions you have made in your guide. Remember, you're a brand; replying to comments in guides is part of your marketability and networking that is essential to a successful guide. If you reply to comments in a friendly and informative manner, you could add your reply to a FAQ section of your guide, and actually CREDIT the voter. This will make him more likely to upvote, and probably answers some questions other people had anyway. Win win.

If, on the other hand, you've realised that perhaps Manamune isn't so great on Sivir, say so. "Gee, thanks for the comment, RandomUserOne. I really was considering whether Sivir needed Manamune, and I guess you're right. I've replaced it with an early Bloodthirster instead."

Also, your masteries are really ****, 30 into Offense?! Before you do anything else, have a look around at the other Sivir guides. Then have a quick look at random guides on this site. Do any of the guides have weird mastery trees, like 30/0/0, or 26/2/2? No? Well, have a quick think, and reconsider your masteries. Maybe getting points in Plentiful Bounty , Burning Embers , Improved Rally upgrades aren't a viable strategy when you can only have 2 Summoner Spells.

Make sure your guide makes sense. While you're changing your Mastery Tree allocation, have a look at your Skill Sequence. Have you got more than 3 upgrades of your ultimate, and you're not Udyr? Or 6 points in an ability?

In response to this comment, say something like, "I chose 30/0/0 because" and then explain it. If you realise at this point that 30/0/0 isn't the best use of Mastery Points, then say, "I really would like to keep Havoc , so I do more damage, what do you suggest I do with the other 9 points? I can't make up my mind between 9 in defense, or 9 in utility."

This reply will show you are willing to change your guide to reflect feedback, which invites other readers following Recent Activity on the front page to have a look at your guide and contribute their own ideas.

Your runes look okay, but you shouldn't be using mana regen seals on an ADC. Have a look at your runes. Defend them with your reasons. Then read their comment again, and consider it. Yes, Sivir does use mana and perhaps if you are always spamming your abilities, she'd need the mana regen. But consider it from the point of view of a person who plays AD carries. When you are an AD carry, what do you do in lane? You tend to harass the enemy champions; when you do this, you are likely to be attacked back - that's why armour seals are so standard. All in all, the voter's comment makes sense, doesn't it?

And if you don't agree? Always answer civilly and defend/support your choices, "Ah, I can see your point, however, I choose mana regeneration seals because the only other viable runes for seals armour and I felt that mana regen was more useful. I could list alternative runes, though, thanks for the idea!"

I also couldn't read your guide because there were so many errors. There really isn't any excuse for this. When you hit that "Publish" button, you are releasing your work to the public eye. Would you go outside without changing out of your PJ's? Would you hand in a draft as your final copy for an assignment? There's no excuse for laziness, run your guide through a spell check, put it into Microsoft Word, check for grammatical errors. Make your guide something people will WANT to read. Not something they have to struggle to understand.

Your response, "You're right, RandomUserOne. I submitted this around 3am in the morning because I was so eager to write a guide... I'll fix it up as soon as I get home from school :)"

And god, it's so ugly, you totally failed coding school. D: How could you get a comment like this? Didn't you read this guide and use some of the coding templates??? If for some reason you ever get a comment like this, it's a sign that you need to browse the forums, have a look at other guides, and learn more about BBCode. People are very visual; they do need some sort of aesthetic pleasantry on the screen to keep them entranced. Even the barest of BBCoding will satisfy your casual readers.

-1 for now. ALWAYS RESPECT THE OPINIONS OF YOUR VOTERS. Full stop, the end. They gave you a -1, don't worry about it. If your guide is good enough, you will receive positive votes that counter this one. Or a Knight in Shining Armor will swoop in on his white horse.

And they said "for now". If you're lucky, they'll check back, see that you've commented nicely, and change their vote. If after a week they haven't replied, feel free to send them a friendly PM. Be civil in your PM.

"Hi RandomUserOne, I'm SoAndSo and recently you commented and voted on my Sivir guide. Since your comment I have changed my guide a lot and even credited you for some of the changes, and I was hoping you could have another look.

Thanks in advance,
SoAndSo.

More Stuff You Can Do
If you've followed everything I've said so far, you're well on your way to making your guide here at MobaFire a success. As an experienced guide writer, I have encountered every possible problem related to guide success, and I've developed solutions to counter most of them. If you're serious about guide writing, these last few paragraphs will set you a level higher than the average guide author. Are you ready?

Asking for Reviews
When I first joined MobaFire, there were no "review shops". I came from a creative writing website where critique and criticism was widely accepted in the form of a "I Will Review For Food" forum, wherein members would actively request reviews from other members in order to improve their work. So I brought this system to MobaFire and created the first review shop in 2011. Since then, many members have created review shops and added an entirely new revenue of how you can get your votes and receive feedback. I strongly suggest visiting the Build & Guide Discussion forum and have a look for reviewing services. Follow the prompts in the thread and await the feedback. Don't request a review in multiple places at once - you'll likely get the same comments, so it's better to get one review, improve your guide, and then go to another shop. AS ALWAYS, read the rules of the forum before you post.

Coding Services
This guide is chock-a-block full of coding templates and ideas. It's fair to say that many of the competent guide authors of today at MobaFire started with some of these humble templates. If you are after some unique coding clusters, you can find them in the Build & Guide Discussion forum; you can request certain coding ideas from MobaFire members who design coding clusters in their spare time. You will still need to be able to understand basic coding to implement their creations, though! Another excellent service is James' Coding Service.

Utilising the Q&A Tool
This can be done before you release your guide so that you know your guide content is on the right track. You can either browse the Q&A page for previous questions and how they've been answered, or you can ask your own targeted questions. For instance, this is a question I asked a long time ago regarding my Nasus guide and the introduction of a new item: "Iceborn Gauntlet or Trinity Force on Nasus?" When you think about it, the uses of the Q&A tool are plenty; ask about runes, masteries, skilling order, laning partners etc. Don't spam the tool though!

You Have Learnt:

The End...
And this concludes my Making a Guide guide; meta, I know. I do hope that the numerous chapters have helped you, gave you a rough idea of what people like to see/read and inspired you to write your own guide. I hope that the previous chapters have prepared you for what happens after you release your guide, and I hope that you are now fortified. Lastly, as a gesture of your own appreciation towards me compiling this guide, I would love a +1 vote and a link back to this guide so that others will be helped like you were.

Good luck and god speed with your guide writing in the future!

Q: Where can I get all the awesome art and custom banners I see other guides have? // MobaFire's Signature & Art forum is home to many talented and willing graphic artists. To this day, they all work for free, as long as you credit their work. Be polite when requesting artwork, and don't expect it to be finished the next day.

Q: A topic of furious debate at MobaFire is the issue of "wall of texts". Is a text wall really that bad? // Well, JhoiJhoi's Bad Karthus Guide was hard to read because of all the spelling mistakes throughout it, the lack of punctuation, and the continuous misuse of ability names, like "Deadly Flies" instead of Death Defied, but the biggest contributor (in my opinion) was how the entire guide was just a wall of text.

The thing with browsing on the internet is that people would rather be doing something else than reading a wall of text. At the same time, reading sentences of the same length and structure will quickly bore the reader. As you can see, this paragraph is of a decent length and combination of different sentence structures. It is neither too short, nor too long.

When writing for perusal on the Internet, you must keep in mind these things:
1) Do not waffle.
2) Do not write short, abrupt sentences in your paragraphs.
3) Keep paragraphs to 3-6 sentences long.

Q: How many people actually read this guide and use the templates? // Let's find out! Here is our Wall of Fame - Featured Guides, written by authors who have either used the templates in this guide, or have credited this guide. Hi-five if you spot your guide in the list! :)
