The way you describe using that item is a good idea to me. You should be escaping those early ganks fairly easily though as you have W at level 2. You alternatively take flash instead of ghost if you want to be even more ungankable in mid. That extra heal just doesn't sell me on late game viability, but you say sell it later on which I like.

Also, I honestly don't cookie cutter it up a lot, I should put a lot more work into the build and some alternative paths. One I like to sometimes do is go for CDR boots, Haunting Guise, Spirit Visage to get 40% CDR. That leaves you really weak, but able to pool a lot more and you can start building power.

Haha, and yeah, there have only been a few fights where people didn't try to kill me instantly. But I do have 2 defensive items in the build so it's not like I've put together a complete glass cannon here or anything.

will of the ancients an an early hextech revolver is good because it gives you added healing on your Q and makes spamming E possible without so much of a health cost. Can make a big difference in early fights. I've survived plenty of early game ganks from junglers thanks to the added healing on my Q from the revolver.

I stay in the lane until I can get sorc boots + revolver and from then on I can basically farm (and still do damage and get kills) and stay in the lane until I can buy my Deathcap all at once.

I hardly ever upgrade to Will of the Ancients, unless my team can benefit from the aura. And at the end I'll usually sell it for another defensive item. And my last item would always be a defensive item (unless I'm not getting targeted at all, which is rare). Force of Nature or Randuin's Omen are usually my choices depending on the enemy team. I'd much rather live more and be able to stay in the fight longer than have an extra 155ap.
