I just bought Ahri and I freakin' love her. Most fun I've ever had. BUT I want to know how to get good as her, i.e. unique tactics, good moves, good situational items, even some cool memories of what you did. If the MobaFire community could help me that would be huge! I really like Ahri and I would love to get good as her. Any help is appreciated! (And yes, I have read a LOT of builds, but if you know any other unique builds, feel free to link me to them.)
Your itemization will often change from game to game. I'm sure there'll be games where the extra offense will be far more beneficial than more utility, sustain or survivability.
Her AP ratings appear to suck because pretty much all of her spells have multiple hits. If you can land all the hits on the same enemy Orb of Deception does 280 (+0.66). Fox-Fire does 320(+0.75). And Spirit Rush does 560(+0.9). These numbers are for her skills at max level and are pretty decent in my opinion.
In a teamfight you can land all 3 hits of Spirit Rush on 3 enemies or spread them out over all 5 enemies with ~2 hits each. If you can aim your Orb of Deception well you can hit 3-4 enemies. That adds up to doing a whole lot more damage in total than a character like LeBlanc is able to do, it's just not nearly as strong single-target damage. In my opinion because Ahri's damage gets spread out so much you need an early deathcap (after your health item- your 2nd big purchase) so you can start taking most of the kills instead of softening them up and taking mostly assists.
As a AP carry you most likely want to have the viablillity to kill 1 high priority target, AoE is fine, but in the end people want you to get that AD ranged carry down asap. I already took in account that Ahri's spells can hit a champ multiple times, but still combined the scales aren't that great (neither that bad). Anyway Rabbandon is a great late-game item, but Ahri really shines mid-game, her kit is just destined to assassin every champ in mid-game (and mid-lane). So I tend to prefer some utillity to get the job done (Rylai's in this case). Rushin Rabbandon? You AP is still low so you won't get much from the effect and you bought a expansive item which effectivness only shines late-game. So imo best way for Ahri, Boots, Doran ring stack, Revolver, Rylais and then Rabbandon if you feel like it, it isn't even neccesary. Although this is just my assumption on how to play Ahri.
Ahri's ap rating sucks, so why go for Needlessly large rod, or rabbandon? Imo, you should get items with utillity, Hextech, Rylai's, DFG. Rabbandon should be like your 3-4 item imo.

^All decent advice except for the Tear of the Goddess. Tear/Archangel is an item that really doesn't have a place on most casters (save Ryze I suppose). There are a lot stronger AP items out there that'll give you some damage immediately.
That's just the way I build Ahri because I like spamming my abilities when I play. It's easy enough to simply drop the tear/archangel from the build and add in a Lich bane later on instead (after the deathcap).
So my build goes:
Hextech revolver -> tear (optional) -> boots -> rylai's -> deathcap -> WoTA -> Archangel's/Lich bane -> Void staff
I'll point out a few things here though. 1) Never mid against Ryze or LeBlanc, they will destroy you. 2) I like to build an early Tear of the Goddess to erase her early-game mana problems so I won't be blue-buff dependent. 3) Landing a Charm -> Fox-Fire -> Orb of Deception combo during the laning phase should drop your opponent to half health allowing you to pick up an easy kill a bit later, landing Charm can be quite tricky though. 4) Even though your passive gives you spell vamp, the Hextech Revolver is an excellent item on Ahri.
I hope I helped you some and have fun!
