Time for an anime series review. Today, I picked Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. I'll split the review into several sections. Let's get to it!
Story - Unlike other Magical Girl animes Madoka has a different story. It's slightly darker and as you keep on watching it gets darker and more interesting at the same time. I personally like the story mainly because it's unique for the Magical Girl genre.
Characters - I liked most of the characters. The main character Kaname Madoka is a kind and caring girl and you have to admire her desire to protect others. Sayaka Miki, Madoka's best friend is the only character I didn't really like. She did a good thing for Kyousuke (the boy she liked) but the way she treated Madoka after learning that their friend Hitomi is going to confess to Kyousuke..that ruined her in my opinion. I can understand her pain and her despair but that was no reason to treat a dear friend like that. Mami Tomoe wasn't explored too well because of what happens to her in episode 3 or 4 (forgot which one it was) so I can't really say much about her. I'll just say she was decent. Sakura Kyoko initially pissed me off with her way of thinking but what she did for Sayaka near the end of the anime..that was beautiful. And let's not forget Akemi Homura. I consider her a protagonist as well even though Madoka is supposed to be the protagonist. She might not have the best personality because of what happened to her in the past but she cares sooooo much for Madoka. I really like that about her. She's willing to do everything to save her because she treasures her so much. In my opinion, Madoka Magica has pretty good characters for the most part. Appearance-wise they all look okay.
Pacing - It's fine in my opinion. Something big always happens in each episode and there is always progression.
Animation - One of the most unique styles belongs to Madoka. A childish/girly style of animation for a dark anime like Madoka? Yes please!
Music - No complaints about the music. The Opening is performed by ClariS and I have almost every ClariS song so I can't really complain. In my opinion the opening could have been a little more..umm..less cheerful I guess? I dunno. I can't really find the proper word so forgive me! Basically, what I mean is the Opening could have been darker. It's still a good Opening tho.
Ending - The ending of Madoka is very very very sad for me. I didn't cry or anything because I rarely show my emotions when watching anime. It was still very sad though. I must say however, it will only be sad for you if you try and understand what the ending means and what kind of message it is trying to deliver.
Final Thoughts and Score:
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica is a great series in-general. Almost everything in it is great and interesting. The only reason I give it a 9 instead of a 10 on MyAnimeList.net is because the ending is too sad for me. I don't like sad ending because I'm depressed for a week after I get one of them. Still, I highly recommend that you give it a shot!
