**** happens. Whether it’s better **** than Leagues, or tragic **** that we just have to deal with, **** will happen.

League of Legends is a game that requires a lot of focus and 30 minutes per game, on average (with some exceptions, such as 3v3). I play roughly 100 games a week, and this amount is slowly growing as I get more into the swing of a new daily life. Before I start a game I evaluate my previous commitments closely. Do I need to go to the store? If so, when? Do I need to carpool my younger siblings? Do I have to be somewhere else at X time? Is there things that need to be done around the house? If all these things and more are fulfilled, or do not need to be until at least 1 hour from the time I get into the rift then I’ll queue for a 5x5. If I have a little less time (~45 minutes or so) I’ll queue for a 3x3. Using this process, I complete most of my games before I have to attend to pre-commitments.

Yet, as I said in the beginning, **** happens. Cars die, things break, bathrooms flood, fires start, and people need you. In League of Legends, going away from your keyboard for more than a few seconds can very likely mean the difference between a win and a loss. The community, and developers, are therefore very strict in their views of going afk. The reasons for going afk are usually as follows (most used to least): Connectivity issues, ragequits and real-life issues/emergencies taking precedence over the game at hand. The issue, is that with the first and last of this list, are sometimes received the same as rage-quitting.

I think that as a gaming community with a bad reputation for being unfriendly, we shouldn’t give players the sense that they will be treated poorly, or wrongly reported if they have to deal with something urgent IRL. To combat this rep. we have built for ourselves, I ask you to be considerate of somebody if they need to take off for something urgent. As well, if you see this sort of case pop up on your next tribunal run, try and be forgiving.

I have to make a quick plea, though. I urge you to be honest when you enter the rift. If people give the honest people more gr ace, and then turn around and be dishonest ourselves, then this will skew people’s opinion of people with “real life emergencies”.

Stay positive, summoners!
