Okay, I haven't played much PvP. I've barely made it to level 12 (which has proven WHY Flash is picked so much). With bots getting dull and not rewarding xp and ip (how I purchase champions) like they used to, it was a good time to start going to the other side of the game.
Joining a party with my friend, Grimol, and a Sivir player I had met earlier in bot matches, we delved into PvP. We sat in queue for five minutes, and the whole time I was worried. I'd only been in two PvP matches before. One went great with me and Grim locking down a Pantheon and Rengar (I swear he was standing on every ward we placed), but the other-just the night before- had been a slaughter. It was a horrible game and you can see the summary on his profile if you want the details.
The match started, and I ended up the BanMan. Our two teammates quickly suggested Yi, Udyr, and Jax. With my two party members supporting the decisions, the picks went: Amumu, Yi, Thresh, Udyr, Dr. Mundo, and finally Jax. The picking went quickly, and I fell into my favorite role: Support.
We were the Purple team and I ended up laning with Tryndamere on top. Grim played Brand in middle, and Sivir and Teemo went bottom. Tryndamere jumped on our opponent early and died to the turret. This put a little pressure on us, but a quick overextend by Volibear and a good juggle from my partner set that straight. Grim was getting harassed by a Twisted Fate who kept poking him back from the waves with stuns and slows. It was hilarious to watch because both teams were talking in all chat. Bear puns were flying; witty banter made up the conversations; and everyone was just having fun. Even when they focused me down (I swear, I got ganked so hard a couple times that Soraka should limp for a week), I left laughing.
After a while, the combo of Morgana, Nunu, and Ezreal on the bottom lane dropped to just Ez. We didn't see Morgana until she popped up top to help our grizzly opponent. It didn't change the positioning much, but it slowed down our progress up top (we had already broken through a turret in both top and mid). We forgot about Nunu though. The top lane was protected from ganks most of the time by wards I kept placing, but as the game dragged toward the twenty minute mark, Nunu...was rising. I don't know what he was doing, but he ended the game with the highest CS. The constant teamfighting against his slows didn't help either.
Our team fell back to the inner turrets as the sudden pushing caught us off guard. I had a horrible stint where I kept getting focused down. The thing that kept my spirit up was the other team-believe it or not. They were joking and playing along in all chat. I even got into a pun competition with Voli as our team streaked down the middle. This was the bottleneck we needed. Tryndamere was bashing opponents aside, Grim was blazing a trail through anything in his way and burning through defenses (puns not entirely intentional), Teemo was just being hilariously offensive. The little guy would NOT die, and that went double with me behind them. I kept silencing Ez and Morgana, and focused on healing Tryndamere and Grim when they were getting focused. The team heals kept us down near the inhibitors as we pressed further and further.
At one point, the enemy team started to push back, and we were debating on pulling out. Kills could have given our opponents that "last push" to get back into swing and win, or we could press harder and pop the nexus. The thing that kept us down there? Teemo. Right as we were going to leave, Grim spotted the yordle on his own. We couldn't let the guy down so I hurried over to heal him and got back into the fight. That was it, we bulldozed the inhibitor, Grim and Tryn wiped the floor with the champions while Starfall kept minions down. Not a minute later, the nexus was gone.
This is why I love the game. It's not just making plays or being the big, bad Carry...it's the team plays. It's having FUN in every match. Even after the game, we sat in chat and talked about what happened. Both teams joked, and it was Honor everywhere. I ended in the negative K/D (positive with assists), but I left positive. If every game I play from here on is even a TENTH the fun of this one, I'll never stop. This ONE game wiped from my memory a horrible defeat, a game where I was on the brink of just giving up LoL, and replaced it with this new determination. I'm only level 12 now, and we've made team plays like this. I can only wonder what it'll be like when we get to the tiers.
It sounds crazy, but I want to have a team one day. This game has let me play with a friend who moved across the country; lets me get away from some of my engineering classes and relax for a while (although truly getting away is like escaping Lux, Jarvan, Nunu, and Morgana with Nocturne in front...); and it lets me meet awesome people. I love the game for all it's given me...so maybe I'll get to be in that championship one year to give something back: a team of people who play so EVERYONE has fun.
Anyway, I'm done babbling. Keep playing everyone; maybe we can get into a pun contest one day.
