League of Legends (LoL) Question: Should I still sit on Hexdrinker, or should I finish it?

Should I still sit on Hexdrinker, or should I finish it?

Before pre-Season 6, I would just buy a Hexdrinker when needed and wait until I was full build to finish Maw of Malmortius. Did this change? Should you upgrade it earlier now, or are you still able to sit on the orange sword alone for a good part of the game?

IMO sitting on Hexdrinker is more akin to sitting on a Spectre's Cowl, Negatron Cloak or Chain Vest. You can finish another item after it if necessary, but it's not something you want to hold onto the whole game.

You could go something like Hexdrinker -> Dead Man's Plate -> Maw of Malmortius.

I would say if you desperately need the stronger shield and the survivability of the passive grab it asap, otherwise just build 1 or 2 items in between and then finish it. And what you say about the armor pen, surely that's great but you can also get that from other sources. I this answer is useful.

What about Assassin/Fighter type of champions? Same deal? Because I sometimes find that there are other, often times better, rush items that Maw of Malmortius. Maw got buffed this season and it now gives some armour pen, which I guess makes the item a need. Thanks for the answer.

Normally when I buy Hexdrinker I end up finishing the Maw very quickly, especially if I play on going into Spirit Visage/Sterak's Gage soon. Besides, I normally get it because I need the MR and shield, and well Maw gives you an even better one ontop of giving you an even bigger fight changing passive. Lifegrip isn't something to be underestimated, especially on those champs that already do have some degree of built in sustain.

You don't rush it but you don't wait until full build either. Somewhere between 2nd-4th item depending on the champion is optimal in my opinion.

You should absolutely finish it. They have changed it from what it used to be and made it very worth finishing. Here is a clip of the best player in the world beating Faker. Hope it helps.

If you have time, the video is certainly worth watching.

Champions who should finish Hexdrinker as 2nd or 3rd item.
Zed, Talon, Yasuo, Riven, and maybe Master Yi

It is generally not adviced to sit on any items, with the exception of chairs, benches and the like. Whatever you do, do not sit on the pointy end!

    Short answer - Finish it.

Long answer - Thanks to the changes it is now cost efficient to finish it, and because it has flat armor pen it will be much more potent early/mid game than it will be late game when more players have started stacking armor.

Just Keep in mind that its passive lifesteal will be much more valuable on an AA heavy champ than a caster based champ, the exception to this would be champs with good AA reset potential like Renekton, Talon, ect....

Except it is; the shield goes up, you get armour pen, and the passive on Malmortius is amazing.
