It doesn't matter which support is in the meta. you should find a support that you like to play and play him over and over until you would start to be really good with him so you would be able to be impactful in the game and start to learn more about the macro game (easier when you don't focus on the mechanics).

I personally Taric one trick, i like Leona or Soraka when i can't play him (ban or the enemy took him). find the support that fit you and you have fun to play with.

I used to play Sona and Leona a lot. Both are really strong, and I feel like it's usually really easy to get first blood with a Leona support on your lane.

It's all about you macro level skill, but i'd recommand something with good CC/poke and AoE damage. (Examples: CC - Leona, Taric, Nautilius especially ; Poke and AoE - Zyra, Sona, Brand, Vel'Koz ). Choose some of these ones and keep them in your champion pool.

As you start to really play the game more, you'll notice a lot of champion mechanics tend to be similar.

The best thing you can do with any champion is improve your awareness.

What I mean by this is that there are different elements in the game that you need to remain aware to, and even higher awareness needed for the Support or Jungler roles.

This means objective awareness, map awareness, ward placements, roam times, cool-down memorization, ability patterns, item awareness, and macro awareness.

The fact is that you are never going to perfectly predict every event that happens in a game, all the way down to movements. But you CAN take the necessary steps to prevent a lot of win condition events from happening against you just by warding important areas of the map that pertain to the stage of the game.

-Early game is usually river bushes and a dragon ward.

-Mid game tends to be dragon, baron, mid-river, and deep jungle wards

-Late game usually follows mid game, but can be situationally shifted to a defensive ward style where you're forced to ward your own Jungle, along with the main Baron & Dragon objectives.

    TL;DR
Just manage your teams vision(including informing your allies to ward occasionally) and pay attention to the enemy laners' positioning, as well as your Map.

If you want a pure 1v9 support I'd recommend one-tricking Vel'Koz. Played well you can solo win your lane and the entire game, even with a feeding ADC. It's 100% on your own skill, no team dependence.

Sona is extremely strong in the meta right now, as well as supports like Pyke and Brand. The key to climbing currently as a support is to carry your team, or help them carry you if you arent having a great game.

    Hope this helps,

I'd recommend Sona or Taric as both are great at the moment and their auras are the easiest to get their fullest efficiency. I'd recommend keeping your champion pool at two or less because mastering champions as soon as possible means you can focus on getting a deeper game understanding.
