It’s been roughly a month since I started the process of setting up a scheduled stream for the several games I play. Using Open Broadcaster Software, I've streamed League of Legends, Dawngate and Hearthstone all with roughly 3 viewers at a time and I've accumulated a following of 5 people (two of which are people I know personally and one of which is my moderator), and I’ve obtained roughly 250 views on my channel.

Streaming has been a fun, interesting and relatively easy learning experience. Before I created my Twitch channel I would never watch a League of Legends stream. Now, I find myself watching other’s streams whenever I’m not streaming myself. Watching to learn though, not for entertainment. Watching for what makes their stream entertaining – what overlays they have, if they have a webcam or not, if they have events, what kind of events those are and etc. I've even changed the way I play during League of Legends and Dawngate matches. Because I subconsciously know that somebody may be watching everything I’m doing, I act inadvertently more polite, I stay in games until the end, even if I’m faced with an irritating player, and I tend to stick up for people who are put down in games. I find this interesting because on the surface I can say that I am doing this because it’s what I think is right, yet deep down I know that I act this way because I am concerned about how my viewers perceive me.

Looking deeper into the psychological effects of streaming, why do I think that hundreds of people are watching me, merely because I've started broadcasting my games on two sites on the internet? Thanks to Twitch, I know that I don’t have a lot of followers, I know that my highest concurrent viewers at any time has been three, and I know that I've only had 40 unique watchers, despite my roughly 250 views. This makes me wonder if any other streamers, especially the ones who DO have thousands of followers, act differently than they do in their daily “unwatched” life?

In general, the entire experience has been a ton of fun. I've found that for the most part, getting things set up is quick and easy to do. Twitch.tv has an easy-to-use tutorial for getting your broadcast up and running, a great interface for editing videos and a lot more. While I have not yet tried different broadcasting software, OBS was easy to set up and streams in a good quality, while also not eating up tons of bandwidth.

What’s Next?

I plan on continuing my stream for as long as I can. I love sharing my games with the internet, people I know and the people I play with. I have not yet decided if I am going to become an exclusive League of Legends streamer or if I will continue to stream Dawngate, Hearthstone as well as other games. Most likely I will continue to stream whatever I am currently playing, whether it be Leagues related or not.
