Thanks for the comments, i was just asking this because everytime i play Mordekaiser everyone is raging on me for picking the most broken champion in history :O
1. Pick a laner that can beat him or match him in lane. Cass is a good counterpick, while Morgana can stalemate him pretty decently (at least I think so). Someone like Udyr with good sustain and strong trades should beat him top.
2. Pick a jungler that has enough damage and/or CC to net you some kills and set you up for a stronger mid game.
3. Buy a QSS (so many players forget this). Not only does it remove the possibility of becoming a ghost, it takes out like a third of his nuke damage, removes the majority of his short term sustain and can even dispel Ignite at the same time (most morde players will use their ult and ignite at the same time). Having a QSS on Morde's main targets really makes him a lot less scary. He'll be forced to either try to fight without his full nuke or target a tankier champion instead, neither of which are very ideal.
He's easy to counter if you know what you're doing. Just wait until he finishes using one of his spells and hit him as much as possible to deplete his shield and eventually into his HP. Since it costs HP to use his shield again, you're basically making him lose HP.
Once he gets spell vamp though, that's a different situation...you'll just have to try and be stronger than him which should be possible if you win your lane during laning phase.
Only thign that should be nerfed a bit is the healing he gets from his ulti. It just heals him waaaaaaaay too much if he gets a WotA. And EVERY SINGLE morde get WotA. But overall, he's balanced. He's just annoying as hell.

So wards are pretty much nececarry with him.
