Going 60 magic pen route is no risk at all. It's optimal in my opinion. If I'm vs a mid that rushes athene's, I'll go magic pen quints for a total of 75 magic pen mid-late game. And they always wonder how I can burst them so hard when they have 85 magic resist. Send me a pm. I play a lot of kat and I have some replays. Needs matchups section
I never said it was risky, what I did say was it reduces the risk from my build. It also takes away the potential reward since you are delaying much stronger items.
i really like this guide as it provides Kat with really good resistance and survivability.

Kk I'll mention a few things and +1 since you got trolled above. That guy is speaking nonsense.
DFG currently is a bad item but is getting a huge upgrade in season 3 release, so I say keep it. GA makes total sense to get because if you get a assist while GA is reviving you your cD's do get decreased so right out of that you can shunpo away...or go in for another kill quickly.
You don't need to mention the story of kat, this is a build/play guide, not a background guide on her and creates uneeded typing/reading.
I personally don't play kata so I cannot say much more.
The only thing that the guy said above that makes sense is that health isn't that strong on katarina, i'd go for armor so that you don't take damage from AA's from middle mage, and minions.
DFG is NOT a bad item if you have the AP to have it scale. Katarina is an assassin champion, you are going to want to play her as such. As for the other person talking about the scaling AP glyphs, take them if you can crush your lane. Yes, scaling AP glyphs make more sense but only if you know you are against a weak lane such as
