A quick note
I played akali as a hybrid with an AP focus for a long time, and recently tried out an AD focus. I found it to be more efficient earlier, and more survivable later.
For this reason, I have switched to this build and have seen great results in every game so far. I encourage you to try this out.
While most go for AP early, I have gravitated toward AD.
I have noticed that nearly every build rushes the hextech revolver for the spell vamp. With my build you get more damage and the same spell vamp usually by the time you get your ult.
Twin Disciplines is one of my favorite passives. Either way you build you have huge benefits. With my build, your spell vamp increases quickly and your magic damage really comes when you get the rageblade. With each hit your magic damage increases as well as your damage and speed.
I see many builds don't use the rageblade, and I really encourage you to use this with Akali. She has good attack speed and fast cooldowns, making it easy to get your charges really quickly.
You end this build with great spell vamp and lifesteal, but it can still be hard to survive. For this reason, I encourage you to switch out the rab cap for a defensive item (such as a banshee's veil or guardian angel) if it is a huge issue throughout the game.
That said, The Rabadon's death cap will boost your magic damage a lot, and will make your damage increase dramatically. So choose carefully.

Try to last hit and avoid being hit, you are squishy early. Your first item gives you enough spell vamp to get by, and enough damage with your armor pen runes to snag some easy kills in the early laning stage.
People underestimate Akali because they are used to the weak early game burst of the AP build. They are rarely prepared for the burst that I achieve with this build.
Use your teammates. You are not tanky enough to take on two at once in the early game. I can usually take out anyone at half life.
