This build is for gathering assists. Lots and lots of assists. Unfortunately, this build only makes Amumu effective after level 6 or after.

The strategy is simple. I typically pair up with a either a Pantheon, Fiddle Sticks, Tristana, or anyone that can surprise the enemy (typically avoid invisible characters since they are easily countered).

After you get your boots of mobility and your first sunfire cape, you'll typically be at least level 6 giving you your ultimate. Here's where the fun begins.

Paired with a champion that's not Twist of Fate, Shen or Pantheon:
Lure you opposing champ away from any turrets and let you lane partner get a surprise from behind (Tristiana and her cannon jump or Fiddle Stick's ultimate) as soon as they are in position use Curse of the Sad Mummy and activate despair. This will mean you're doing 50 damage plus 2.1% of their life + 40 magic damage a second + 75 damage + whatever damage your partner is doing (this is at level 6). If they aren't dead at the end of your ultimate, simply cast bandage toss to stun them once more and finish the job.

Paired with Twist of Fate:
Simply wait for him to use his ultimate then follow the above attacks.

Paired with Shen:
Allow yourself to reach half health or so to lure the enemy in for the kill. Have Shen use his ultimate on you, wait for 1.5-2 seconds, then follow the steps above.

Paired with Pantheon:
My favorite pair. Lure the enemy away from their turrets, have Pantheon use his ultimate from your spawn (this is so he regains the mana he loses when he activates his ultimate). As soon as you see the green circle complete it's expansion, follow the steps above.

Rune choice:
You'll want complete cool down for one reason. More assists. The champions you'll be pairing with all have cooldowns that are way less than yours. Do everything you can to lower it.

Spell choice: In case you are counter ganked, heal and ghost will usually allow you enough time to get away. In case of a snare heavy opposing team, grab the Mercury's Treads.

Item choice: This can very. If you're facing a spell heavy team, you might choose to go with Banshee's Veil in place one of the sunfire capes, or if facing tank killers you might choose a Guardian's Angel.

Personal Experience:
If my partner is good, I'll die max of 3 times and have 20+ assists for the game and maybe a few kills thrown in for laughs.
