Introduction
Armor Pen Marks are a given on any melee champion. No alternative
Mana/5 is more of an early game rune. If your games go the way mine do, the games are over so fast that late game isn't too much of an issue.
This is where I differ from most Yis. I take attack speed glyphs because Yi has to be fed. The best early game glyph is attack speed (in my opinion) and is taken only just barely over Magic Resist / Dodge.
The Armor Pen Quints are great on yi, but they can be replaced for either attack speed, flat health or a mixture of the 3.

Through a good amount of testing I have found that 2% attack speed always comes out on top by a little bit of damage over 2 attack damage. For this reason, I only take one point in Brute force. The Archaic Knowledge is taken for alpha strike. Once again, this is more of an early game personal choice for me. I find it is also nice for farming.
I put points into the defensive sub-spec because that 10% speed boost has saved me more than 10% neutral buff duration. If you prefer to go 21/0/9 with points in improved ghost, Hp/mana regen, experience and buff duration, that is viable as well.

I focus almost all of my build on attack speed. I think I originally thought, what if I just stacked attack speed with an Infinity's Edge. I really, really saw a huge difference from a more ap based build I was going before. Because of Yi's Wuju Style, a capped attack speed increases his damage per second by about 200. This is a huge number in the big picture. Trinity Force is a MUST have because of the slow. If you really need the health, feel free to build a frozen mallet for the survivability and slow. I often pick up Bloodrazors instead of Bloodthirster, because sometimes that lifesteal doesnt make a big difference in the team fights. An attack-speed capped yi does 10% of the opponents max health per second JUST with bloodrazors. Crazy.
Always, Always ALWAYS save your ult until the fight has started. It is SUCH a short duration for its cooldown. If your ult is down, alpha strike in, then run out. Rinse and repeat to harass. Take advantage of Wuju Style, but be aware when it is off cooldown, you lose the passive bonus. Do not misuse your E or you will lose a substantial amount of damage.
Going for the kill?
Alpha Strike -> Wuju Style -> Highlander
When to use meditate.
I take meditate slightly late, around midgame. I find it is not useful until ults like karthus start to occur. I have survived 50+ karthus ults by using Meditate. The magic resistance doesnt seem like alot when you are being focused in a team fight, but in reality it is a hell of a lot.

I choose to use ghost and exhaust as team benefitting spells. When I am fed, an enemy runs away from me 90% of the time. I chase down enemies, as well as save my teammate's ***es with ghost and trinity force slow. I use exhaust not because of the slow, but more the damage reduction. A trynd about to **** bricks all over my face needs to be suppressed.
