In Noxus, any citizen may rise to power regardless of race, gender, or social standing - strength is all that matters. It was with committed faith in this ideal that Riven strove to greatness. She showed early potential as a soldier, forcing herself to master the weight of a long sword when she was barely its height. She was ruthless and efficient as a warrior, but her true strength lay in her conviction. She entered battles without any trace of doubt in her mind: no ethical pause, no fear of death. Riven became a leader amongst her peers, poster child of the Noxian spirit. So exceptional was her passion that the High Command recognized her with a black stone rune sword forged and enchanted with Noxian sorcery. The weapon was heavier than a kite shield and nearly as broad - perfectly suited to her tastes. Soon after, she was deployed to Ionia as part of the Noxian invasion.

What began as war quickly became extermination. Noxian soldiers followed the terrifying Zaunite war machines across fields of death. It wasn't the glorious combat for which Riven trained. She carried out the orders of her superiors, terminating the remnants of a beaten and fractured enemy with extreme prejudice. As the invasion continued, it became clear that the Ionian society would not be reformed, merely eliminated. During one bitter engagement, Riven's unit became surrounded by Ionian forces. They called for support as the enemy closed in around them. What they received instead was a barrage of biochemical terror launched by Singed. Riven watched as around her Ionian and Noxian alike fell victim to an unspeakably gruesome fate. She managed to escape the bombardment, though she could not erase the memory. Counted dead by Noxus, she saw an opportunity to start anew. She shattered her sword, severing ties with the past, and wandered in self-imposed exile - on a quest to seek atonement and a way to save the pure Noxian vision in which she believed.

Runic Blade

Riven's blade gains a charge for 5 seconds every time she casts an ability, stacking up to 3 times. Each of her basic attacks consumes an available charge to deal 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50% AD bonus physical damage.


Broken Wings


ACTIVE: Riven dashes towards the target nearest the cursor or in the direction she is currently facing, and lashes out at all enemies in front of her, dealing physical damage. Broken Wings can be cast twice more within 4 seconds, with the timer resetting after each cast.

The third damages all enemies around Riven in an expanded radius, Airborne icon knocks them up, and can also be used to pass over certain instances of terrain.
Each cast of Broken Wings resets Riven's autoattack timer.

Ki burst


ACTIVE: Riven's sword emits a burst of runic energy that shocks nearby enemies, dealing physical damage and Stun icon stunning them for 0.75 seconds.
PHYSICAL DAMAGE: 50 / 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 (+ 100% bonus AD)

Valor


ACTIVE: Riven dashes towards the cursor and gains a shield that absorbs incoming damage for 1.5 seconds.
SHIELD STRENGTH: 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 / 210 (+ 100% bonus AD)

Blade of the Exile


ACTIVE: Riven reforms her sword for 15 seconds, gaining 20% AD as bonus attack damage, increasing her attack range by 75 for a total of 200

Wind Slash:


ACTIVE: Riven unleashes a wave of energy in a cone, dealing physical damage to all enemies hit, increased by 2.67% for every 1% of target's missing health for a maximum 200% increase at 75% of target's missing health.

Autoattacking in between each Broken Wings allows for the most sustained damage as you consume Runic Blade stacks to deal extra damage.
Since B Broken Wings produces three charges, which is exactly the number that Runic Runic Blade can store, you may wish to complete it to initiate a fight with her Airborne icon knockup, following up with auto-attacks and her other skills.
It is a good idea to learn how to auto-attack cancel with Riven Riven. This can be done by using any of her abilities immediately as the damage is applied during an auto-attack. Because Riven Riven's auto-attack animation is longer than the time it takes for the damage to actually register, doing this can cut off more than a second with a combo such as:
Q > AA > Q > AA > Q > AA
You must apply a new attack command in between each to obtain the quickest damage possible.
The best way to go about this is by auto attacking, immediately pressing Q when the damage of the AA is dealt, while hovering over the target. As the animation of the Q is playing, order Riven to move anywhere beside the target and immediately right click the target again. Both of these clicks should happen before the animation of the Q is finished. This will allow both the animation of the Q and of the auto attack to be cancelled and will significantly increase your burst speed once mastered.
Some combinations of abilities allow for better speed. For example, any cast of Broken Wings can be used while the animation of Wind Slash is still running. The fastest way to burst down a squishy target if you can do it without additional auto attacks is:
E > R > Hydra > W > Q > R > Q > Q
Every ability in this combo will cancel the animation of the ability before it, except for the 2nd R and the 3rd Q.
Blade of the Blade of the Exile lasts for 15 seconds so use it at the start of the fight instead of the end of the fight.
Using Broken Wings in conjunction with Valor will give you small boosts of mobility as they move you forwards a bit. This is a very efficient way to move around the map, as your moves cost nothing. Broken Wings, however, allows you to click on the mini-map and use it to continue moving, while Valor will cancel your move actions.
Beware using skills right before a skirmish, as your abilities will be on cooldown and thus be unavailable for the fight.
Broken Wings can also allow you to chase an enemy so that you can Airborne icon knock them up.
Remember that Broken Wings and Valor give you some mobility boosts for fleeing, but only the 3rd strike of Broken Wings can pass map terrain. You can, however, dash with all of them through terrain generated by abilities like Anivia Crystallize, Jarvan IV Jarvan IV's Cataclysm, or Trundle Pillar of Ice.
Make sure you test what map terrain is jumpable over. An example being: the walls separating the river and the jungle in Summoner's Rift.
Be aware that Wind Slash has a cast time and a travel time as well, so you shouldn't waste it on enemies who are just about to leave its range. Try using smart cast to save precious seconds in aiming the ability.
Wind Slash deals maximum damage to multiple opponents at or below 25% maximum health, therefore use Wind Slash.png Wind Slash to finish off enemies who are fleeing or deciding to stay despite low health.
Riven Riven is an all-around strong champion in top solo lane due to her ability to avoid ganks with her mobility, her no-mana costs, and her instant cast shield. Play aggressively and use Valor to shield your way through harass.
Broken Wings resets her auto-attacks on each cast and it is useful to cut off the animation (tested under attack speed slows).
Broken Wings' dash speed is roughly equivalent to 475 movement speed. At 550 movement speed, however, simply moving is faster than using Broken Wings as a method of faster travel.
Ki Burst can be used to cancel the animation of her auto-attacks and the Crescent activation of the Hydra. However, its own animation cannot be cancelled.
Riven may cancel the animation of Wind Slash with Broken Wings' 3rd cast. Use this to speed up your combo.
Don't use Wind Slash right away if the target is no longer Stun icon stunned or Airborne icon knocked up, because you risk missing them if they flash away or simply dodge it. As the range is quite long and shaped like a cone, it's easiest to hit when the enemy is not right next to you, so it may be wise to hold on to it until they try to escape.
