Introduction
Hi everyone,
Following a loooong topic on Reddit about Elise, some voices raised saying her place was in the toplane and that she has a lot of good matchup against top-tier S2 toplaners.
I tried it, and god, it's surprisingly good.
Elise denies them, Elise nibbles them, Elise devoures them !
Passive: Spider Swarm
This passive only impact the generation of your "spiderlings".
Check from time to time how many you have and be sure to max their number using your human spells
Q: Neurotoxin / Venomous Bite
This spell is the reason why other toplane players will hate you. It's based on actual %HP and it's very annoying.
Your toplane opponent will try to minimize its damage ASAP but it will deal a lot when you'll go for other targets.
In spider form, this is your execute spell.
Aim first targets with less than 25% HP and you'll be able to burst them down in a click ;)
Trick : The Spider-Q is really really good to kill neutral objectives, the drake for example.
W: Volatile Spiderling / Skittering Frenzy
In human form, this spell does a large amount of damage. Just aim to a location and the spider will damage all nearby enemies OR will explode immediately if it hits something on its way.
IMPORTANT : The spider grants vision !
As a spider, this is hell of a steroid. Could be very surprising when your opponent wants to trade damage.
As soon as you'll start to hit him, your spiderlings will jump on him. Then and only then press W.
If you do it before, you'll waste some boost-time.
Trick : The Human-W will go for the nearest target after the skill-shoot distance. You can try to make the spider walk around waves to deals damages on enemy champions.
The spider-W is a killer-spell to get down turrets. Use and abuse of it !
E: Cocoon / Rappel
As a human, the spell is simply a root, without damages.
But it is good to lock an enemy and throw your Q and W at him :)
As a spider, the spell is an enhance version of Fizz jump.
With the difference that you are NOT able to jump back on allies.
Either you go for an enemy (champions or minions), or you'll fall back in the middle of your zone.
So be careful when using it as an escape. This is more a way to gain time and wait for your CDs or Allies.
Trick : When you will use your Spider-E, there's a delay before going up and down.
This can be use to follow champs that are going to flash.
It requires some skill but target an enemy directly with your spell and you'll fall on him no matter what !
Nothing too weird here for an AP character.
Magic Penetration is basically a must have.
Mana regen will help you in laning phase.
You will be able to harass in human form and then farm in spider form.
I choosed to use flat AP instead of AP-per-level as top lane is a very brutal lane.[/color]
Having a boost of damage in early will help to put your opponent in the right mindset.
He will know he would more likely loose any trade and so he will stay quiet.
Building Elise could be difficult, but it is in fact, very simple.
You don't need to stack up AP as spells get a lot more stronger over time. Moreover, two of them are %HP dependent and so will not make the best use of AP. Even more considering Elise ratios.
On the other hand, what you need, is sustain and control.
You want to be able to root an enemy and burst him down in a glimpse.
If you cannot do that, what you want is to be able to chase down your pray.
Hence, the Rylai ;)
As said earlier, you don't need so much AP.
But, and we will become more important during s3, you will love Magic Penetration.
This item has a good balance between the two stats.
So, you got damage ? Too bad you cannot deal them.
FZH will grants you a good sustain in lane and in the melee.
Moreover, the CDR will turn your human form in a spam-form, very poke-efficient !
Then, we're done with the Item Core Build.
You should be able to have all this items around the 30min mark.
If you do so, then you will be a killing machine in encounters.
And Poke/Execute char in team fights.

Here is a list of most used toplane char and the status of their matchup against Elise :
IRELIA
Elise is very nice against Irelia as her Human-Q and her human-Z.
You will be able to harass Irelia a lot and to deny her from farming with your ranged spells.
But, DO NOT attemps to 1v1 her or you will get disapointed !
JAX
Elise is also good against Jax if you're good enough to avoid his stun.
To do so, when Jax jump on you, you should already be in Spider form and then simply press E.
You will have some seconds to let jax loose his burst and you'll be able to harass again :)
OLAF
Same as for Irelia and Jax. Simply harass him with your human form and avoid his burst as a Spider. Execute your target with the help of a jungler or if your opponent makes a very big mistake.
JAYCE
NEVER, EVER, EVER PICK ELISE AGAINST JAYCE
Your main asset is to be able to harass your target and then to finish it with spider burst.
Don't try to face someone that can handle your harassement or can burst your down.
GAREN
Even if your %-health damage can scale well with Garen, I would not recommand Elise as a coutner.
Garen will be able to passively regen, and will have a good trade when you'll be in Spider form.
More to come later ...
