Very nice Guide, i just bought me Malzahar today and really had fun while following these instructions. Well, sometimes i failed in early game like against teemo, he always got away with like 30 hp and i died because of his posion^^
But mostly i won or at least made a nice score ;) Thanks =)
Thanks for the feedback, maybe you should try grabbing ignite/heal/exhaust and some sort of scape summoner spell flash and ghost ;)
P.S: I´m Building Malzahar in a whole different way now, mostly situational, but works as well.

I main Malzahar, and honestly build him completely differently. I find that going an AA build with a Rabadon's Cap makes him so overpowered that I don't really feel the need to worry about my squishiness. Now, granted, I DON'T sidelane with Malzahar. I'll solo lane or mid lane, but that's more because I hate having to save a team mate for being dumb.
I've gone Lich Bane, but solely for the purpose of back dooring if our team desperately needs one and we've had a problem somewhere else in our team mechanics. I've very rarely been targeted during my ult by other champs. Pro Alistars and Cho Gath's seem to be the only tanks I really run in to that try to prevent it.
Why the armor quints? With maxed out (Red and quint, not blue) magic pen, Malzahar can easily feed himself in mid lane. Especially against ranged AD like Vayne, Trist, or Ashe, who try to just poke early game. Your Visions will do more damage than the 2 or 3 hits they get off on you. Also, casting it and running back into your minions will cause them to attack the enemy chasing you, who will take aggro from your minions and get hit even more.
The biggest disadvantage I see Malzahar having is against higher HP champs in mid. Kennen, Morde, Urgot, champs like that can cause him the biggest issue because even at level six, a pond>ult combo won't finish them off, while in endgame you cause use those two abilities to insta-kill anyone.
I'd seriously encourage anyone who reads ANY Malzahar build to try their hand at a full Archangel build. Doing more than 25% of an enemies health with your pond is insane endgame, and will keep everyone running from you. On top of that, if you are focused just drop the pond at your feet, follow through with CotV, and then drop a Visions. Even if you die you'll get anywhere from a double to penta kill. Gotta love Visions.
I like the points you made, although the entire build seems agressive I consider myself a pretty defensive Malzahar player, waiting always for the right ocasion and being there to save my team mate´s ***es most of the time I have a chance to. Since I try not to rely too much on Summoner Spells, I do highly recommend Flash or Ghost with Malzahar, but as for the other Spell I´ve been getting Heal lately, I know it sounds lame and I even said it on the build but it has saved me and my team mates from sooo many ****ty situations such as tower dives or global ults and ignites.
The part where you mention the armor quints, those were only suggestions because Malzahar its an overkill champion by definition and there is no need for runes or masteries as matter of fact, even at level one you can obliterate in team battles, therefore extra armor/magic resist runes are always welcomed in any build for any champion as you may know. getting extra +24 on each by level 18 could make a difference.
I do encounter the same problem as you mentioned with heavy HP champs when 1v1-ing during the lane phase, but it´s all about playstyle, if you or any other person harasses the hell out of the enemy as long as your mana pool allows it, you will have the upper hand.
And I agree with you with new Malzahar players trying their own builds, my intention with this guide is to ease the understanding of this champion and therefore give some helpfull pointers (hopefully) to people that wants to give him a try.

Very nice guide, very detailed and helpful... Just one tip on the void staff though, with so much MPen it's useless against most enemies(and against those that it's not it's usefulness is very very limited compared to cost, since your statis mpen is like 88(zomg!) so unless a whole team's stacking mr it won't penetrate any resists, but yeah the rest of the items I like a lot...
I'd also like to see some spell vamp too, it turns out it's very strong and I feel it does save you a lot during gangs(q+w in team fights and r on single targets drain a hell of a life, and can help you avoid a death when taking damage)...
Hey thanks for the feedback, the Magic Pen. is mostly aimed towards maximizing it but not going over it, I believe flat M.pen cap is 40 if I´m not wrong, then there is another Spell Penetration thingy that is calculated as a percentage (%), thus affecting the champions stacking mostly Magic Resistance.
Great point on the Spell Vamp, I have tried it and I enjoyed it as well, specially since Will of the Ancients has been around providing that extra spellvamp+ap to the team and specially considering the amount of damage your dot does, as well as your other abilities. I´m pretty sure I did not mention his ult is stopped by clease, just the supression effect its what I meant, I believe it is written under a Note. Thanks for the feedback though, I glad you liked it!
