So I changed the item build a bit, especially in my writing style. I like Swiftness Boots on Garen, you just can chase much better and be faster of course. In my older description, I already said >3 CC -> Mercury..Without the Tenacity needed, I think Boots of Swiftness do really well on him. I have to admit, this lack of CC has become rare, but in some situations you just do not need that.

I really don't know why you get boots of swiftness and shadow dancers. idk but most of your dps comes from your spin doesnt it? I would buy kinda Mercury Frozenmallet atmas IE core build because the atkspeed feels kinda wasted on garen in my eyes. Please correct me if im wrong.

I have made some good experiences with this build, it supports every trait of Garen very well.
I don't know in which dimension you play (<level 30? >200 wins? >500 wins? >1000 wins?), but compared to other champions my teammates play, Garen is the counterpart of squishy, due to the resistances. Anything above 3500 health is there not necessary, or you play Sion or Volibear.
Also, in the games I play, you are not squishy in the late game, the enemy team rather focusses such champions like Leblanc or Vayne (squishiest examples). No-one with a bit of knowledge will focus Garen instead of them, or Renekton. Would be just stupid as hell. Your squishyness always depends on the focus behaviour.

The build is a bit controversial, I have to admit, I guess I should change it. The actual item build should be the 'fed as hell' build, situational items should play more of a role. I guess you are right. I will change the layout an build itself in some time.

you will be squishy as hell the WHOLE game for an offtank
