Amumu is one of the few tanks that has the possibility of taking on 5 champions by himself!!!
You want the 9 in offensive for the cd (cool down) reduction and for the magic penetration. The 15% magic penetration is mainly for Despair and the Sunfire Capes.
The 21 in Utility is mainly for the mana regen because Amumu is very mana dependent. It also provides some cd reduction, movement speed bonus, and summoner spell cd reduction.
Doing 0/21/9 is also a good mastery tree set up. Getting all the bonus armour, magic resistance, and damage reduction (stacks with Tantrum). While getting the mana benefits from the utility. I prefer to go on the offensive side to more easily get champion kills.
I get complete magic resistance runes for a couple reasons. Your first few items don't give magic resistance making you rather vulnerable to spells where this gives a slight reduction from spells. Harassment usually is from spell casters and the magic resistance helps minus the incoming harrasment damage during both early and late game.
This is important to get early, but only level it once until it is all you have left. It is important to have when chasing or for taking the initiative.
This is Amumu's most important ability overall. You want to get Despair whenever you can right after Tantrum. Despair is great against high hp champions along with Baron, Dragon, Lizard, and Golem. Always have Despair on when chasing, being chased, or taking the initiative.
Tantrum is your money making skill! Level Tantrum always! Tantrum is how Amumu farms. It also provides a passive that lowers incoming damage.
Curse of the Sad Mummy
This is Amumu's CC (crowd control). This is great in team fights to keep all enemies close to you where Despair, Tantrum, and your sunfire capes will all effect them. This is also a great fleeing ability if necesary.
Boots of Swiftness
This will be the first item you buy. You want Boots of Swiftness over Mercury's Treads or Ninja Tabi for the extra movement speed. You want to be able run away or chase when needed. When chasing your opponent you want Despair and your sunfire capes to be damaging them.
This should be your second and third items you buy. These will greatly assist you in farming waves of minions very quickly. The Sunfire Cape provides you with armour, health, and passively does 40 damage to enemies around you.
Force of Nature
This will be the fourth item you obtain. You want this for a few reasons: first for the 76 magic resistance it provides and second for the movespeed which helps in both chasing and fleeing. The health regen is just an added bonus.
This will be the fifth item you get. You want this for the 57 magic resistance and that it blocks one negative spell every 30 seconds. The health and mana are just added bonuses.
This will be the last item you obtain. This is the last item because now you should have great magic resistance and armour and it should be very difficult for them to kill you. Guardian Angel provides you with extra armour and magic resistance, but it also brings you back to life after you die. Having the armour and magic resistance you have, you will either be able to finish killing whoever is around you or be able to run away.
Begin with boots and 3 health potions. Early game is all about farming. Amumu is weak to begin with until he gets his first few items. Get every minion kill possible!!! Don't be afraid to tantrum one minion, every penny counts!!
By now you should have boots of swiftness and one or two sunfire capes. Your main priority is now split between farming and killing champions. You should have one level of Bandage Toss, tantrum maxed (or close), and Despair leveled 2-4 times. If you have an ally champion with you, it's easy kills! Just Despair, Bandage Toss, Tantrum, Ult, and by then you and your ally have well killed them. This however is what you will do whenever you initiate a fight including team fights.
Now you should have most if not all your items and have almost all if not all of your abilities maxed. You have now passed on from the farming stage to the killing stage. You should now be nearly impossible to kill. The time is yours to go around ganking and pushing lanes. You can now easily push lanes on your own, but is best if you take atleast 1 or 2 other allies to help quickly kill champions and turrets. The game is now yours to control!
I hope that this build has been helpful. Please leave comments and vote. Thank you for reading.
