You pay for all the expensive hybrid items by getting kills and assists. Your R just plain wrecks squishes once you get some AP. Remember, it does 150% damage to champions. And it means you can hang way back in team fights until everyone is low enough to wipe out with W and Q. If you die more then 2 or 3 times in a game with Kog something is going horribly wrong.

Hybrid Kog'Maw? What?

There's a point you didn't get with Kog'Maw itself:

PLAYING AD/AS:
All his spells are still usefull:

Q Is use for Lowering armor for more damage, and gives you a good attack speed bonus.
W Is for mashing anything
E Is for slowing things around (Preaty good in team fight, actually)
R Is for blowing those who can't stand in a fight like real men.

PLAYING AP:
All his spells are STILL usefull in this mode:
Q Is for a massive damage output in a single shot.
W Is for making you auto-attack worth something
E Is for a nice AoE damage while still slowing down
R Is godly, srsly...


So playing Kog'Maw full AS or AP is the way it should work. I Tried many hybrid builds (Preaty much with Kassadin and a little with Akali) And i can tell you that going full in a way is way better than spliting your power in two different categories. Since a game end preaty much when you'll have 4 items (That's what i have in pre-made, including the boots) you can't afford much of those 3k+ expensive item and all those hybrid items are way costy for what they gives. The Only items i'm aiming for is The Maldred since it's a must and anyway in laning phase the little malred is really usefull.

And the Q spell's passive is more of a late-game buff. But! You can change some lvls on Void Ooze for CAustic Spittle!
