Hey. Love the idea for this build. I tried it out, did some math compared to my build, then tried some more. I just can't make it work! Here are my issues with it:

  • It takes ages for Gold Quints to pay off compared to the power one loses out on (700g in 40 mins versus +15 AP from the get-go)
  • No Defense masteries or runes leave you very squishy during laning
  • You sorely lack the mobility for warding and getting to where you're needed without Mobility Boots
  • You are forced to recall too often just for mana regen (and the health xtra mana would have given you). 100% base mana regen isn't enough imho.

All in all, you're not dominant during laning with those runes. Your midgame power spike arrives late. Your lategame is alright, if you can get there, but Sona isn't a lategame champ per se, so we're not actively aiming for very long games. Honestly, I didn't get to your full build in ten attempts, so I never got to see Iceborn Gauntlet in action :(

I do acknowledge that any build takes time getting used to. But as a Sona main, I feel I know her comfortably enough to discern the differences - notice the benefits, rather - within a dozen games. I might be wrong and just need more practice :)

Just wanted to let you know I gave your build a real go, and left some feedback while I was at it.

Cheers,

Glad to get feedback. I'l address them one by one (from my perspective) but I should probably put this out there as a caveat to everything i'm about to say: This approach to Sona is recommended for those really comfortable with Sona and good lane supports in general. A good measuring stick for this is if you have enough money for frostfang by 3-4 minutes in and enough money for tear of goddess on the 7-10 minute mark. This usually means you were impeccable in timing harass with your tribute procs while being efficient with mana to not go back all while being safe position wise

Gold quints: One of the more flexible options in my build, you can sub those out for AP if it suits you more. I tend to alternate between AP and gold.

Defensive masteries: I know. I'm confident in my laning and positioning abilities. Those with less experience shouldn't attempt this build because you need the CDR which puts you in offensive and utility tree.

Boot replacement: This happens really late in the game, as in, you probably have extra money to blow on switching boots. It will be inefficient if you switch it out early on. I tend to switch into boots of swiftness after I achieve 40% cdr and the next item or part gives me CDR bonuses. That usually happens late in when assist spree gold is easy to come by.

Mobility: Early on is probably the weakest in movement but if the goal is to keep tabs on dragon and ganking choke points, you don't need to be running all over the map. Late game is when you benefit from the AP scaling to movement speed for Song of Celerity. Luckily, that is also when you do need to be running all over the map to ward.

Recalling: Judicious use of mana is pretty essential. For me, mana problem is usually under control in the 7-10 minute mark because that is when I have enough gold to grab tear after a frostfang rush. I will supplement it with mana pots if needed which is pretty common but not backbreakingly expensive.

You cannot state this without really mentioning everything concerning these items because some players might be new to role of support.

Your guide is lacking one fundamental section in my opinion, and that is: Why should someone choose this build over others? After all, consider that this guide is more focused on advocating a specific build rather than to simply introduce the champion or the role to others, and thus the why should be just as important as the how.

Masteries was bugging out on Mobafire, half of the guides were missing one and I filled out my sheet but it didn't show on the final version. It just fixed itself.

Also a small error on my part filling out the skill sequence.
