Jax is a very good melee fighter their abilities are:
leap strike
empower
counter strike
and grandmaster's might

runas

prefer to mark attack damage
as it requires attack damage
in signal strength for more armor against enemies
in glyph magic resistance by some enemies who are magicians and able to withstand much time on the battlefield
in quintessence attack damage also need attack damage
if you do not like my runes attack damage could choose armor penetration

masteries

The Masters 24/6/0 provided are what I prefer, but could change depending on player preference and situation. Three points of vampirism a point where the executioner and the other is the havoc I recommend

Items

I will highly recommend them starting with boots of speed and 3 mercury's health potion then continue with a vampiric trads scepter that is to take his life while fighting and dying is not much help you
then change into a lantern then a wriggle's zeal to kill mara run faster and faster
