-With some advice, changed the Quint runes from ArPen to Health after deciding that the extra health would be more beneficial early game.
Katarina is personally my favorite of all the champions in League of Legends. She is incredibly powerful and has the ability to carry her team to victory. If played correctly, Katarina could easily wipe an entire 5v5 battle with her . My personal best score ever with her was 28 Kills 0 Deaths. Her potential is astounding. But, I digress, on to the build!
Mastery23/7/0 is the way to go here. To be honest, once you've filled your Offense talents, there's not much else that really benefits her, but out of the other two, Defense is the best way to go to provide Kat with some extra survivability.
RunesI went MagPen reds and blues. This is because her abilities deal magic damage, so you want to penetrate their magic resistance. AD yellows for some extra damage early game. I went health for the quintessences to boost your survivability early game and make it easier to harass, which Kat is the best at. <3
Skill Sequence/ PrioritiesAs always, the order in which you level your skills is strictly dependent on the opposing team's champion composition. In almost every situation though, will always be your primary skill to level up (save for ). would be the next most important with being on the bottom of the priority list. But again, it depends on who is in your lane. If you're having a good time harassing your enemy, don't worry about and max out your . As with most champions, it is ALWAYS good to have at least one point in all your moves by the time you reach level six. It's better to have a skill and not need it than to not have a skill and need it.
This coincides excellently with your Ult. Nothing is more annoying than an enemy just barely getting because they weren't slowed or CC'd enough to suffer the full duration of . When you're going for your kill pop , followed by and top it off with your . This will almost always insure a kill in early and mid game.
This is pretty self explanatory. This is my personal favorite summoner spell for almost any champion. I can't count how many times I've gotten a kill because of this attack. Let's just say, my kill total would be much lower. Drop to finish off those pesky little runners or to initiate a fight with those annoying healers (I'm looking at you and ).
Item Build Explanation
The priority stat for this item build is obviously AD. Katarina's two primary moves and scale very well with her AD. I will break the build down by each item and provide an explanation for each item's place in the build.
Long Sword and health Potion
and . This will give Katarina some nice starting AD which will make it even easier to harass with your . Not much to explain here. Health Potion is so you can stay in your lane longer.
Sword of the Occult
Katarina is a carry. She isn't meant to die. This item is a core part of this build because of it's huge AD and bonus to your movement speed. The movement speed increase helps keep you alive if you need to run and helps chase down those annoying runners who only have 3% health after a team fight.
Now, I know death will always happen. There WILL always be that game when you are just not doing your best. That's okay. Skip over SotO and get something that will provide some survivability. I would go with something like Sunfire or .
I have these for the same reason I have the runes on this build. Magic Penetration. All three of Katarina's moves (which are her main sources of DPS) deal magic damage. It's imperative that we ignore as much magic resist as possible.
An appropriate alternative to this are . This will make it stupidly easy to gank and chase people down.
The Bloodthirster x 2
This is the bread and butter of the build. This item has the single most AD on any item in the game. It's imperative that we have these items because our two main skills scale amazingly with AD. Once you obtain even just one of these, you will see a huge increase in your DPS and overall performance. You will become a very destructive force once you have both of these.
This item compliments this build quite nicely IMO. By the team you get to building this you will already be dealing incredible damage. Getting this will give you some survivability to increase your destructive force. It's passive also helps A LOT if your exhaust is on CD and you need to get a full duration of off.
The Black Cleaver
This item has some pretty decent AD on it as well as a really nice passive that coincides greatly with the ArPen runes. The armor debuff it leaves on the opponent will yield a noticeable increase in your damage you deal with auto attacks, especially on squishies.
To be honest, I used to have a lot of trouble playing Katarina. I used to get owned. Up until a few weeks ago i started playing her again and I realized how inedible she is. She's actually not as difficult to play as I used to believe.
I personally believe the best way to go with Kat is solo mid. She is incredibly good at harassing despite her being melee. Don't be afraid to be aggressive. Katarina deals A LOT of damage early game with her . The trick is to trick your opponent. Try to avoid dropping the blade right on them so they don't know you've targeted them. Instead, target a creep that is near them so the blade will bounce and hit your enemy. This will be difficult at early ranks of because it doesn't bounce very often. Using that technique makes her incredibly good at harassing. Be careful of champions like Vlad who have really good heals. Vlad especially gives me a lot of problems in mid. If you get a champion that is giving you problems don';t be as aggressive and just be very cautious.
Once you get , IF you feel comfortable using it without taking too much damage, use that every time it's off CD as well to do even more harassing damage to them. If you're up against a champion that has a slow or also does a lot of damage, I would highly suggest you not do this because not only will this put you right by the champ but you'll also be behind them, which, depending on your position, could be very deadly.
By now, you should at least have your with a few stacks and your . If you were able to push mid a lot you're going want to jump from lane to lane and help your other team mates and hopefully get some ganks off as well. This stage is pretty standard. Just keep building towards those Bloodthirsters. If you have time or get the chance, try picking up Lizard buff for that little boost!
At this point in the game, you have both of your built and probably your as well and working towards your as well. Pretty much, you can't be stopped. By this stage team fights are breaking out every two or three minutes. Try to stay with these fights, you're undoubtedly strong enough to win most 1v1 fights, but you're much more effective in team fights because of your .
