Introduction
Nocturne is a great solo or duo laner and jungler. Additionally, Nocturne, being an assassin, is a major threat to many AD champions and many squishy champions. Always communicate with your team to take down champions with your ultimate.
Remember, this build for Nocturne is the way I play him and suits my play style best, so feel free to change up the items or masteries.
Start of the game I grab a Cloth Armor + 2x Hp potions + 2x Mana potions. This will give you more survivability and the ability to last longer in lane to harass your enemies and push forward.
The items listed above focus mostly on pushing Wriggles Lantern (remember to use your items active, it comes in handy when you want to chase, scout, or jump enemies with your ultimate) and Berserker's Boots. At this point you should be at least level 7-9 and able to solo Dragon and other buff giving monsters.
Now this is where you should observe what the enemy team is building. If the team is high in Ability Power (AP) I highly recommend getting Wits End. The same process goes if the enemy are stacking armor; Where you would push for a Youmuu's Ghostblade. Always keep and eye on what your enemies are building and what items they are using.
Following or Prior to your conditional item push for a Bloodthirster and a Black Cleaver (or Zeal --> Phantom's Dancer). The stacking of AD over Attack Speed (AS) first is essential for Nocturne. REMEMBER: You are not Master Yi or Tyrnademere who stack Crit/AS.
In the end, your core build should consist of Wriggles, Berserker's Boots, Bloodthirster, Black Cleaver, and Phantom's Dancer.

I start out with my Q, and max it out immediately. Then maxing my E right after. Following with 1 point in W at level 4 and maxing it out near end game and level your ult whenever it is ready.
One thing that is great about Nocturne is his ability to harass and burn down minions without using his abilities consistently. Remember, Nocturne is very mana dependent! Dont spam Duskbringer! Always push and harass the enemy champions with Duskbringer and eventually finish them off with another Duskbringer + Fear combination.
Your ultimate, being as epic as it is, is useless if you do not communicate with your team. Your ultimate can be a great initiator or a finisher. I prefer to use my ultimate as an initiator or to scare away lower health champions.
An underrated ability that Nocturne has is his W (aka his shield). Although this ability has a ridiculous cool-down (CD), it is very nifty. Not only does your shield counter stuns, fears, etc... It even negates out champion ultimates such as Warwick's Infinite Duress and even Nunu's Ultimate. Additionally, even after countering these abilities Nocturne will get an AS boost, so use this to your advantage in team fights and take down an opponent or two.
Nocturnes abilities are also Defensive (not only offensive). With Duskbringer you can follow your trail and gain a temporary speed boost and flee from a gank. If your enemies are close enough you can tether them with your fear and create a gap between you and your enemy. Lastly, as you are fleeing you can always pop your shield to avoid a stun, fear, slow, etc...

Many guides would recommend a Ghost + Ignite combination to chase your enemies within your duskbringer trail and finish them with a nice ignite. However, I have recently switched to an Exhaust + Ignite combination. This combination is nicer for team fights and you can do more damage to the enemy with the 1 point in Cripple (in offensive mastery tree).
Other summoner spells are useful, but not perfect for Nocturne. Remember, Nocturne is an Assassin, so go for an offensive look. Honestly, who ever heard of a defensive assassin?!

I like to play Nocturne to blow up squishies. Noc can blow up any AD carry almost instantly end game. You can try to pick people off who are farming alone but you must have map control (know where the other enemies will be). Playing any game requires to read the other teams intentions. Read the game and stay a step ahead of your enemies.
Enjoy,
Nocturne
