Brand can deal a massive amount of AOE damage, but is very squishy too, and therefor you will often be focused in team fights. That is why i take both Rylai's Crystal Scepter and Rod of Ages.

When i play mid brand i often harass a lot, and when i've hit my enemy about two times with my pillar of fire, and my cooldowns run out, im going for the kill. As soon as you hit your enemy first with conflagration followed by sear, he will be stunned, and then, you use your pillar of fire (which i max out as early as possible in the game) and deals a lot of damage. If this not kills them, i use ulti also, and then the kill should be yours.
