Not Updated For Current Season

Malzahar is my favorite champ since he was entered into the league. This is how I like to play him
MasteriesI have chosen to build my masteries with 9 offense and 21 in utility.
My offense masteries are to get spellpenetration more ap and cooldown. 1 point in deadliness is just to get archaic knowledge and sorcery.
my utility masteries are pretty standard with a focus on mana and movement.
Summoner spellsI am using ghost and ignite as my summoner spells. I prefer ghost over flash since its better to kite and a great support when running away. Giving you the oportunity to turn and cast spells even while running away. In battle I use it to stay out of harms way walking around the outskirts of the battle.
I use ignite in combination with malefic visions and nether grasp. This gives me good dmg output even with no other spells available and have often given me a kill on "hard to catch" heroes like shen and kassadin.
RunesI have chosen this rune build because thats what give me the highest dmg output. I have chosen magic penetration runes on marks instead of ap since this gives me more of a edge in fight.
1I prefer to start off with Doran's ring mostly because it gives me increased mana regen but also for the hp boost that i find critical for malz to have in the begining. I sell this item later. Usually around the time i get my first Archangel's staff or Zhonyas ring.
2As my second item i usually go for a combination of amplifying tome and boots but if it turns out i have enough money for mejais i go straight for that, so i can start snowballing early.
3Third item is sorceres boots. I havent built these boots early since malzahar is a hero that can stand far away and still farm well. I pick these boots for obvious reasons: magic pen.
4Rod of ages must be built up this early for it to start having effect. I use this item for better survivability and also it works well with my Archangel's staff.(If u havent been able to farm well early game u might considering swapping this item out for rylais.)
5Now i will start building for my archangel's staff. This is a very effective item combined with rod of ages. This is a great help for malzahar in long battles where he is in danger of running out of mana. At the same time this item gives great ap boost. Just remmember to spam spells to get it working. In some cases it might also be effective to just finish up tear of the godess and head straight for Zhonya's ring.
6I build Zhonyas ring to max my ap. It also great for surviving fights where you havent been able to stay out of harms way waiting for cd on spells. (Sell your dorans here if you havent done it allready)
7Second Archangel's staff. Used to build even more ap and mana. This will finish your build. Just supply with elixirs.
PS. If your mejais isnt working out for you, consider a third archangel's staff.
PPS. Most of these items snowball so you will become one of the hardest late game champs.
How to play and skill order
I usually prefer mid or solo lane to get most out of Malzas great farming abilities.
As Malz its important to remmember that your voidling can dish out some serious damage. I skill my "call of the void" first and start spamming in base until i got a voidling ready on my next spell. In a 1 on 1 battle your voidling will be able to help you take down almost any hero at lvl 1. Remmember that the voidling will usually head straight for the closest hero after its spawned so try to keep up and stay in range so it can harass for you. It can also be effective to save your voidling until you get to lvl 2 and use it in combination with malefic visions to farm more efficient.(The voidling allways attack the enemy with malefic vision on him) This way your malefic visions will jump from creep to creep and if the enemy summoner isnt careful he will be hit aswell without you not even being close. This makes malzahar a great harasser and as long as you keep your malefic visions jumping you will have no problem controlling a 1 vs 2 lane.
Try to think ahead of the enemy with call of the void since it have a slight delay.
1 on 1 battles
At lvl 5 you skill your null zone. Now Malzahar is ready to kill. Lower the enemies hp with malefic vision and call of the void. try to get as close as possible to the enemy and cast null zone and use nether grasp. If you are in range use your ignite but be careful so you dont break the channeling. This should also pop a voidling wich will help you take out your enemy. Grab golem whenever you can.
In group fights you should run in and out popping spells. You can pick up a lot of kills putting malefic visions on low hp heroes running away from battle. Remmember to save your nether grasp for when you feel safe from being stunned/silenced or surrounded. Since Malz have aoe silence try to use it when the enemy are clustered togheter.
Null zone is a badass tankkiller at lvl 4/5 so be sure to get them tanks the rest of the team cant fix. VS. a malz with perfect build, they will take about 20% damage of their max hp per sec.
