Micro Gameplay tips for Beginner to Intermediate Players

By Atayeu
Introduction

Under Construction - Let me know what you think

The small things add up! One of the most important skill sets to master in League of Legends is consistency. Being able to consistently reproduce positive results while avoiding a repeat of negative ones not only turns you into a force to be reckoned with, but creates unseen synergy among your team.

Unseen Synergy?! Sounds mystical, but it really isn't! Think of it this way, when a player is constantly overextending into unsafe territory and getting themselves killed, teammates react often times by no longer assisting said player. Players whose gameplay is inconsistent lose the trust of their teammates as the game progresses. Before you know it every team mate is running in the opposite direction leaving your entire team to be picked off. It doesn't have to be anything as drastic as a player feeding, but can even be as simple as your fellow bottom lane partner is being repetitively chunked down by pokes without returning any damage to contest the opponents CS farming. A lack of micro gameplay knowhow and its accompanied necessary practice in consistency can cause a team to fall apart causing more damage than the enemy team could have ever done.

The more you play the more you learn; if you're open to it that is. Within this guide I've compiled some tips, tricks, and best practices that are often unknown to both new and intermediate level players alike. Reminding yourself, out of and in game, about what you should be focusing on improving is crucial. So if this list doesn't look all that impressive or doesn't seem to contain anything you haven't already encountered, remember, LoL can get intense at times. When it does we often forget even the simplest of rules, such as looking at your mini map!
Increasing Consistency
With consistency being as important as it is, how do you become more consistent? Simply playing more isn't enough! Infact, by playing oblivious to your weaknesses and mistakes you could potentially build bad habits that continue to hold you back from becoming better.

The first part to building consistency in your micro gameplay is actively calling forward and reminding yourself of the best practices you should be displaying. For example when laning you don't want your opponent to go uncontested as they farm minion kills(Creep Score). In response to your opponent approaching to last hit a minion, you too can step forward and punish them by auto attacking them. While punishing the opponent is ideal, some players forget that they too need to obtain as much CS as possible. Far too often i've seen players chase an enemy far and wide, leaving behind their own CS which is in turn lost gold and if they're far enough away, experience as well. At times like these we need to remind ourselves that creep score and experience are far more important. 14 minion kills is roughly equal to 300 gold, the same amount as rewarded by killing an enemy player!

Reminding yourself of what you should or should not be doing throughout the game is a lot to manage. Eventually you'll begin to form positive habits that will habitually manage parts of your micro gameplay leading to more consistent gameplay outcomes.

The second part is just as crucial to maintaining positive consistency. Mistakes happen, even the best of the pros make mistakes. The worst thing you can do after making a mistake is, nothing! Never do nothing! Instead try and take a few seconds to analyse your actions, your emotions, your gameplay footage, or any other available material that may help point out where and why you strayed away from the best micro practices. Don't get beat up over your mistakes though, because each mistake you make is a lesson learned and thus a better you.

It usually isn't so clear as to where you may of went wrong. Let's say your teammates were wiped out while you were solo'ing baron, but you were nearly finished! "If only they had stayed then pushed tower. They threw the whole game!" you say. Don't be so quick to point the blame on others and instead reassess what you could have done to help mitigate your teams errors. Perhaps abandoning your epic battle with baron to turn the odds of a poorly chosen team fight could of been the difference. Even if YES you were right, your team should not have gone that way and should have went with plan B instead, or YES your ADC is HORRIBLE and is feeding, you need to approach these situations with a constructive mindset. Perhaps staying closer to your ADC as a support more often may give them the chance to turn things around. Or if you don't believe you truly could have made the bad into good, then mitigate. Don't follow your feeding ally into a 2v5 only to further the enemies gold. If you make certain to correct these mistakes very early in the game then you won't run into situations where the enemy team truly feels unstoppable.

In summary the two parts for reinforcing positive consistency are:
1. Constantly remind yourself of best practices you should be following during gameplay
2. Always come away from every mistake (your team's and your own) with a constructive lesson you can act on to avoid a repeat of the situation

Combining these two methods each and every game are enough to show impressive improvements in no time. By methodically recalling the oh so important tactics of micro gameplay that we glaze over more often than not, you are forming and reinforcing good habits while finding and destroying the bad ones. This is something pro players are always doing and have dedicated coaches who act as another set of eyes when analyzing their play.
Lane Positioning
TO BE ADDED
List of tips to be added
In your settings turn on the floating combat text that displays XP gained from killing creeps. This will help you get a feel how close you need to be near minions to remain in range for the experience. The text is smaller and non-intrusive, it doubles as a great tool for reminding you to always stay in range of enemy minions when they die.
