Nunu too often is used as a tank which in my opinion is a complete waste of his nuking abilities! His ultimate, Absolute Zero, does 2.5 times his ap (ability power), and is also an AoE (area of effect), making him a perfect penta killer!!
You want the 9 in offensive for the cd (cool down) reduction and for the mp (magic penetration). Being an AP champion mp is always beneficial.
The 21 in Utility is mainly for the mana regen because Nunu can and should use mana fairly quickly. It also provides you with cd reduction, movement speed bonus, and summoner spell cd reduction.
I get Greater Marks of Insight for the magic penatration. Like I said early being an AP champion mp is always beneficial. This will provide you with 8.55 magic penatration at level 1.
I get Greater Seals of Focus for cd reduction. cd reduction is important for spamming Ice Blast and for a shorter cd on Absolute Zero. Seals are also good for mana regen, but I wouldn't suggest it because of Nunu's passive which allows you to cast spells for free after 7 hits. If you can play aggresively and keep the enemy champions back, you can freely hit/last hit creeps and start spamming for no mana cost.
I get Great Glyphs of potency for some ability power. This will provide you with a little extra damage for Ice Blast and Absolute Zero along with extra healing from Consume. Games are usually decided at the begining.
I get Greater Quintessences of potency for the ability power again. Providing you with more damage and healing than before. Once again... games are usually decided at the begining of the game.
If you get these runes you will have 23.76 ap, 8.55 magic penatration, and -2.61% cd reduction at level one with no items!!!
This is Nunu's passive ability that allows you to cast a spell for free after every 7 hits. This is great for keeping mana costs low and harassing.
This is your anti squishy ability. Getting a couple points in Consume early game allows you to stay in your lane much much longer and even allows you to solo mid. You can consume Heimerdinger's turrets, Shaco's Jack-in-the-boxes, Annie's Ult Tibbers, and even Teemo's Noxious Mushroom traps. Consume is also great when a fight isn't going your way or you are retreating, eat a minion.
Blood Boil is great when laning with dps (damage per second) champions and especially dps carries. When you apply Blood Boil to an ally champion or minion you get the effect also. It is also great to keep Nunu's passive, Visionary, active. It is not a bad idea to get Blood Boil level 4 instead of a second point in consume depending on how well you are doing in your lane.
This is nunu's second best friend, just second to Absolute Zero. Late game if you follow my build will around 800 damage!! That is more than many champions ultimates!! The only difference is that Ice Blast has a very short cd and comes with a built in slow.
This is Nunu greatest friend. It does a flat amount of damage plus 2.5 times your AP in magic damage in an AoE. Absolute Zero is one of the largest AoE's in the game!
This should be the first item you get and you want to get it as soon as you can so that you can start ganking with a purpose. With 20 stacks it provides you with a total of 180 ability power and -15% cd reduction.
This will be the second item you get. You want it not only for the movement speed, but for the extra 20 mp. Like i've said earlier, being an ap champion, mp is always beneficial.
The rest of the items you can get in any order. I will say which items I get when later in the Game Play.
This item is greatly beneficial for Nunu. It gives +50% attack speed which helps keep his passive, Visionary, active keeping low mana use. It also provides 55 ap and +10 mana regen/5 secs. Along with all of that, it gives -25% cd reduction!!
This is where your ap really starts to increase. You get a flat 120 ap!!! You also get 25% extra ap. This item is pretty self explanitory.
This is a great item for all of it's benefits, but mostly for the 80 ap and it's passive, 100% chance when an ability is used that your next physical attack deals an additional 100% of your Ability Power in damage. Added to those two benefits are that it adds 350 mana, 7% movement speed, and +30 mr (magic resistance).
This item works great with Nashor's Tooth and Blood Boil. It will help keep visionary active, allowing you to cast more spells and keep your charges on Guinsoo's Rageblade. Works great to Ice Blast, hit (bonus damage from Lice Bane and RageBlade), Blood Boil, hit (bonus damage from Lich Bane and Rageblade), then run if they still have a descent amount of hp (hit points) left or continue to chase and get the kill.
These items are not set in stone and you can change any of them that you don't like. Some other good items for nunu are: Deathfire Grasp, Archangel's Staff, Rod of Ages, and Void Staff. I would not suggest Rylai's Crystal Scepter because the slow does not stack with yours. I also would not suggest Banshee's Veil because people get it to stop a stun that would halt Absolute Zero, but it rarely ever does that. It usually stops some random spell before or during Absolute Zero before the stun comes and never works right. Therefore there isn't much of a reason to get it if it doesn't block a stun during your ultimate. These are not laws or rules!! Just suggestions.
I'm going to give two gameplays; the first as a side laner and the second as a solo mid laner.
Game Play (side laner)
The begining is usually where games are decided, just keep that in mind. First grab an Amplifying Tome and a mana potion then head on down to the grass. You and your laning partner want to harass as much as possible to either a) get a kill if possible or b) keep them from as much exp (experience) as possible. This will also allow you to freely last hit creeps without worry of harassment and keep visionary active. You also want to farm quickly and get your Mejai's Soulstealer as soon as possible!! Once you have enough to buy it, BUY IT!
After you have your Mejai's Soulstealer go for the kills! Go back to your lane and try to get a kill, but if not just push them back then head to mid or top and gank. Once you get the money for Sorcerer's Shoes go get them.
Now you start earning the money for the real items. These items you can get in any order you want, but I try to get Zhonya's ring first if i'm doing real well other wise get Nashor's Tooth first. The greatest way to get easy penta kills or any amount of kills is to lure any amount of champions into grass. Hide in the grass activate Absolute Zero and by the time they get to you, Absolute Zero has gone off and if you have good ap most of them should be dead. Ice ball one alive, then Blood Boil and chase any that might have survived. This works particularly well if you're almost dead to ensure that they'll chase.
Continue to go from lane to lane ganking whoever you can. This will give you charges on your Soulstealer and large amounts of gold. You should now have Nashor's Tooth and Zhonya's ring and several charges on Mejai's Soulstealer.
If you have done well you should be very fed. Work towards Guinsoo's Rageblade then Lichbane. You should now be working towards ending the game and want to stay with your team members while pushing a lane. When the enemy/ies come harass as much as possible until one side engages. If they engage use Absolute Zero, if your team engages then Blood Boil a DPS ally and start Ice Balling everyone starting with the lowest of life or squishiest. Eliminate them one by one.
Game Play (Solo mid laner)
Most people don't think that Nunu should or can, but I believe other wise.
It is extremely important that you harass them as much as possible. Try to kill them or send them back to base to lessen the exp they recieve. Try to keep them at the same level as the side lanes. Once you get level 6 it's an easy kill. Let them push a little ways past their tower. Ice ball them, Flash then use Absolue Zero. If you have been harassing this should be a very quick kill. Other wise you will atleast send them back to base allowing you to farm and get your Mejai's Soulstealer. Continue to harass and last hit creeps. Get a kill whenever you can.
From here on it is pretty much the same as if you were side laning. You want to solo because Nunu is great at harassing and keeping the enemy champion from receiving exp. You also want it to get your ultimate as quick as possible, because early on Absolute Zero is just as devastating as late game because it does 2.5 times your ap plus a flat amount and all champions have very low life.
You want to avoid soloing against Ashe, Miss Fortune, and Morgana or champions like them. Ashe and Miss Fortune are both fast moving champions with long range and it is difficult to harass them. Morgana is very effective against you because of her Black Shield ability making it nearly impossible to harass her.
