Diana is a pretty good counter to most ranged AP mids, because she can get into your range quite fast with her ultimate. Avoid being hit by her Q or her ultimate. Stay away.

Introduction
This my first time making a build guide for any champion.
I've mained Lux since Season 2, and I can't say I have a high rank since I've only recently really started to get invested in LoL again (I was platinum in s5).
This build is a work in progress as it's something I came up with to try to get rid of a squishy AP mage, while giving her an appropriate kit that would allow for crazy sustain and damage.
Let me know what you think in the comments!
I've put Scaling CD Reduction, because after you have the full build, you'll have 30% CDR. With the quints in place, you'll have a full 40% CDR which is perfect to spam abilities (Which won't be a problem due to the insane amount of mana you'll have with the items).
If you don't want or need the full 40%, you could substitute the CDR runes for Movement Speed OR more Scaling AP.
Also - I've taken less amount of Armor + MR runes since you shouldn't be in the front lines of any attack, but still have some just in case you get caught up somehow.

I have put Barrier and Flash as main spells. Flash is a no-brainer so I won't go into that.
Barrier is mostly a tentative spell whilst you figure out the build - you should use it against champions that can easily do lots of damage in one go, such as an Akali bursting you down.
Instead of Barrier, or if you feel you've got this build nailed, take Ignite for extra damage and healing reduction OR take Ghost to get better mobility for engaging/disengaging.

Hextech GLP-800
With this item you gain HP/Mana/AP, a UNIQUE passive that allows you to gain mana if you get hit, PLUS an active ability that deals around 400 damage at level 18 with various projectiles - AWESOME team fight engager/disengager.
Hextech Gunblade
Using this will allow you to effectively fight 1v1 against most champions, especially if they're melee. The active slows significantly and deals roughly similar, slightly lower damage, than the Hextech GLP-800. You want this as part of your main build as it gives you the awesome UNIQUE passive that heals 15% for all the damage you deal, and even if this is reduced for AoE effects it still sustains you quite well.
Morellonomicon
This item speaks for itself. 100 AP. 20% CDR. 400 mana. 2 UNIQUE passives. Why don't you have one already???
Lich Bane
Ohoho. This item I feel is a must-have in this build. With 80 AP, 10% CDR, 7% Movement speed, 250 Mana, and the UNIQUE passive Spellblade, you'll be dealing a lot of proc'd damage with Lux' passive. Please buy.
Alternative item: Luden's Echo: 100 AP, 10% Movement speed, UNIQUE passive that deals a lot of damage in AoE form. Not as great for this build (less spell vamp) but still good.
Rabadon's Deathcap
A Mage staple. 120 AP plus a UNIQUE passive that boosts your AP by 35%. Sold? Yeah!

This build can be quite expensive totaling a whopping 17.4k gold. The good news is that you can probably achieve this if you farm really well and get the first turret/blood and win team fights, probably just before you hit 30 minutes on the timer.
While it is a long wait, it's definitely worth it. With this build Lux can easily solo the Elder Dragon (I tested this after killing 3 normal drakes), and fight effectively in a team, but also 1v1.
Remember, this is, as the title hints, a work in progress, so please leave me any ideas and suggestions you may have!
Thanks!

~Good amount of HP/Mana
~Heals self with Spell Vamp
~Sustains Mana by fighting
~Great team fights with the help of Hextech GLP-800
~Lich Bane procs huge damage + lifesteal from basics + spell vamp
~Elementalist skin makes you sassy af
~Expensive build
~Relies on late-game
~Still a bit squishy due to Lux's naturally low resistances
~Requires good control over skillshots
