Update as of 15-11-11

Renekton still remains a viable 'Solo Top' pick.

Check out the changes made to summoner spells and Itemization.

Increasingly I've seen a resurge in popularity as people have begun to realise his true potential as a tanky dps bruiser.

He currently sits, near perfect in terms of balance.

In light of recent events masteries, runes and items are going to go through a facelift more coming soon.

Renekton, The Butcher of the Sands

Renekton is an awesome tanky dps, capable of dishing out a tonne of damage with a balanced mix of items. Hes easy to farm, has great lane sustain and is really fun to play. He's been one of my favourites since his release. Since the recent nerfs I've been conducting some of my own testing and have found he is in fact, still viable.

Key abbreviations

ArP - Armor Penetration
CDR - Cooldown reduction
MR - Magic resist
DPS - Damage per second
AP - Ability power (usually referring to champs who utilize AP)
AD - Attack damage (usually referring to champs who utilize AD)

Match history

The all important proof

Just realised this link was broken, GG imageshack.

Ill have a new match history pic up soon.

Skill sequence

The main mechanic of Renekton is fury. Increased stats from fury based attacks is what you are aiming for.

Level this skill up first, its your main lane sustain/dps.

OP in conjunction with Black Cleaver - Max this second

a seriously underrated ability. The harass and escape capabilities with this skill is insane. Be be sure to Slice and Dice the opponent when fury is full as it will shred the armor a tonne stacking with ArP runes and items.

the big bad ult. Similar to Nasus's Fury of the Sands it is deceptively strong allowing you to 2v1 mid game. Alot of double and triple kills owe their respects to this skill.

C-C-C-Combo breaker

Remember, you maximize your dps through the mechanics of fury and this will ultimately determine how much damage you deal. Its best to wait after a few auto attacks until your fury bar is red and then let rip!

The typical combo you might see from good Renekton's are as follows:

Laning

Through the minions -> -> -> back out.

1v1/1v2

-> -> Build fury -> -> Build fury ->

Teamfight

Pick out their carry, stun the most threatening with Ruthless Predator or save it to stop ults like Absolute Zero Nether Grasp etc. Pop Dominus and try to Slice and Dice + Cull the Meek through as many enemy as possible.

Remember to use your summoner abilities on another carry as well. Essentially you want to attempt to shut down as much of the enemy dps as possible while dealing a fair amount yourself.

Summoner spells

Exhaust/Ignite?

Awesome for Renekton both offensively and defensively. Since you already have an escape mobility with Slice and Dice spells such as Flash and Ghost are less useful. Flash is usually for positioning/escape but Ren can do both through SnD

Ignite is really useful, has great synergy through + and can crush healers/tanky regen such as:

UPDATE:

This is useful if you need to flash-kill, flash-initiate, escape, steal baron etc. Take it if you feel like you need it. All up to personal preference.

Warding

In between your item build you want to include sight ward.

Usually you buy about 1-2 depending on your farm situation. Place them in key strategic spots shown here:

Wards are crucial, they help stave off potential ganks and are essential to maximizing your win.

Vision Ward can be useful if placed at dragon to counter ward. Although you should concentrate on farming and obtaining 1-2 sight wards mainly.

Runes

Greater Mark of Desolationx9 - More dps

Greater Seal of Resiliancex9 - Extra survivability vs AD

x9 - Extra survivability vs AP

x3 - Mobility is a necessity on Renekton as he has problems with being kited/zoned. This helps to keep up and continue crushing.

Other runes you can also include:

- Better for early game if you have trouble vs. AP

- If you feel you need more CDR and arent getting it through Items.

Other quints you can also include:

Greater Quintessence of Desolation - Once again more dps

- More hp and synergizes well with Atmas.

Masteries New updates soon ---

This is the standard build I use for Renekton: 1/21/8

1 point into offense for the improved exhaust

21 points in defense for greater survivability

9 points in utility. This is actually better than 9 in offense as the crit and cool down reduction aren't really worth it since you already get 35% / 40% CDR from items and you'll be prioritizing farm potential over 2% crit chance.

Items

CORE:

Start out with Boots and Health Potionx4 (Wait after minion respawn to pick 4th)

Work towards:

The Brutalizer is great for CDR, damage and ArP. GET IT. Although you wont be rushing Youmuu's Ghostblade but the stats on this puppy come so cheap.

Ionian Boots of Lucidity is part of your CDR setup. Its essential as Renekton is heavily reliant on his cooldowns and not his auto attacks.

Spirit Visage is a great item for Renekton. CDR, MR, and increased self heal. Although the recent nerf to SV hurt, it should still be considered as part of the core.

Sunfire Aegis really solid choice as it provides great synergy through Dominus and Ignite as previously explained.

LATE GAME:

Atma's Impaler This item is another no brainer, Armor and a conversion of health into AD is a great thing considering renek benefits from 3 health items.

Black Cleaver Get this straight after Atma'f if you're fed. Really strong item on him!

NOTE: Black Cleaver is great at anytime in the game just make sure you have enough survivability to engage and crush skulls.

SITUATIONAL:

Elixir of Fortitude usually pick it up before you know a teamfight is about to start and you have fallen behind on cs or kills. It helps to pump out a bit of damage and maintain higher hit points making it harder to target and kill you with your ult up.

Hexdrinker is very situational, but basically if you feel you need some survivability versus heavy AP nuke such as annie or malz and are lacking in damage. Its cheaper than Banshee's Veil and has the same cd.

Quicksilver Sash is a great item for escaping suppression versus Warwick or Malzahar. Sometimes teams WILL choose to focus you as their first and as such, you need to pop everything in one go. Being suppressed will stop you from being able to ult. Something to think about.

Aegis of the Legion is good if your tank is having a hard time keeping all the squishy little cubby bears alive; it will help to soak a bit of damage. This item is relatively cheap, has good all round stats and will help your team out in team fights.

Mercury's Treads is picked if you REALLY need to stave off the CC deaths such as stuns, taunts, fears etc.

Black Cleaver if your dps is lacking, you feel as though other renekton builds have explained a viable use for this item and you want to help reduce armor for the AD carry then pick it up. Its not a core item because I found that the item choice on Renekton needs to be tight and balanced between cdr, survivability and damage.

END GAME STATS

~ 3k HP (Without Frozen Mallet) (3.7k HP with FM)
~ 210 AD (Without Frozen Mallet)(230 AD with FM)
~ 180 Armor
~ 90 MR
~ 40/45% CDR

RESULT: The item and rune set up provides you with a careful balance of stats needed for a bruiser of this type, considering he isn't Jarvan with an amazing passive.

Note: This is how I build him, but the way in which you prioritize items may be completely different.

For example: You are vsing either Talon or Irelia top. The first thing you want to buy is 45 armor and lvl 2 boots converting the armor into Sunfire Aegis asap.

Reason: You will completely gimp their dmg, if you watch high elo streams they do this based out of consistency in lane as well as negating any burst damage. Just play smart and adjust accordingly.
