Introduction
Your job as a support is to get your ADC fed.
You do this by protecting your lane by warding, and giving your ADC opportunities to get kills.
Here is how I do it (It isn't a pretty thing to look at, but it works.):
Yup, this is my build .. people are going to downvote this but you know what, it works. It allows me to pressure the enemy adc, get that clutch stun, and get my ADC some kills. And boy does it piss off the enemy ADC when I am constantly in their face, stunning them, and they barely notch down my health.
I always start with a vision ward, it makes your junglers job easier, and adds pressure to the enemy bot lane. If you are winning your lane on your first b, pick up another vision ward to continue the pressure and deny enemy vision. Often times their support will place a ward further up in the river after you have taken out their first one, take note of this when you b and get another v ward.
By the time you have gotten the items listed, laning phase is almost certainly over. From here you can build various types of armor / group benefit items, depending on the enemy team comp and your team comp. Assess their largest damage dealing players and build accordingly.

I don't really think there are many cons, I'm certainly not the best player out there and yet I have GREAT success with this build.
Pros:
- Ridiculously easy early game, helps shut down bot lane.
- My per game average as Taric: Kills: 2.9 Deaths: 3.2 Assists: 16.4
Cons:
- Weak during first few team fights, as you are just starting to build your Mag. Def.

Taric Provides good burst DMG in team fights. (Late game typically my Taric does 600+ dmg with his ult + "w").
Pop your ult in the middle of their team, and if their ADC is down follow it up with a quick "w".
If their ADC is not down FFS DO NOT USE YOUR W! (I have seen many tarics do this so I had to say it)
If you find the enemy teams ADC focus certain teammates in team fights, hug that team mate!
***es the enemy team and decide who is the best player to stun. For example if they have a Amu, stun that idiot before he ults.
Often times in my games team fights are won by me flashing to their ADC, stunning, and dropping my ult and w, this at least takes him out of the fight for several seconds.
