Q is litterally not needed at all for a successfull farm with shen, Ki Strikes is all you need, and while experienced players may not tower dive a shen more times than most when im low or my lane partners low they will, regardless of skill, to many champs are bulky now and can take several hits and everyone knows it, as for maxing taunt first its by far the best way to get your carry fed early and also keep him alive, I used to play maxing Q first and I honestly see no point to it anymore. Since my farm is just as good without it I prefer to be more of a benefit to my team early. The only times Vorporal might be required for farming is when you lane with an AoE farmer, Malz, Annie, and Akali are the only 3 champs who really hurt my farm and I always throw in a couple early points into vorporal to make up for it. Ive played Shen off and on for about 6 months now and Ive looked at other builds, tried them, and used them to start with but this is what I ended up with and am most succesfull with.

Try taking a look at other builds.

Leaving Q until late-game will wreck your farming during laning, it's how you recovery HP without ever needs to go back, AND your ranged skill for last-hitting.

Belittling your farming for the possibility of taunting a free kill is NOT worth the trade off.
Exp'd players will stay out of turret range against a Shen.

Thanks man just went 6/1/12 last game with him and we won without losing a single tower lol xD Shens ult has been nurfed so many times but its still such a game changer at times. Thanks again for the +1 and goodluck with Shen in your future matches :)
