To explain this ridiculous build, i will go in to detail on every aspect, and why it makes shen a very viable mage.
First off, i made a mage shen because i was looking through the LoL official site, was looking at shen and the tips said he could be built like a fighter, mage, or tank. Now, anybody decent builds him like a tank, cause thats what hes amazing at. But i thought, how about a fighter or a mage, how would that work out?
Well i thought about it, a base atk damage shen doesnt seem viable since boosting atk dmg and atk speed doesnt synergize with his abilities at all. his passive goes every 8 seconds, and does damage off his max HP, vorpal blade is AP, his taunt doenst change and requires people atk him, and without tank gear that can be iffy. Feint is mediocre on a DPS shen only to mitigate the damage of his taunt, and his ult is team helpful, but doesnt help his Atk Dmg cause.
So i went and thought through a AP shen build. I went about it as if i was making a AP sion or Magewick. I also worked around reducing his cooldown as much as possible so you can throw vorpal blades as often as possible, since its your main damage dealer. The deciding factor was, he has alot of magic dmg abilities, that he can spam due to energy costs, pure awesome. Also, the AP bonus towards the health you get per strike with vorpal blade will be over 100 in no time.
So lets get into this shall we.
Ignite - I choose ignite because with masteries i can get an extra 10 AP, and get bonus damage to shen, which as a AP shen, he needs.
Teleport - first i know what ur thinking, wtf? he already has his ult, wtf is the point of teleport? Its to jump in for kills, and to save ur team. Shen, even as a mage, is still a team support char, cant get away from that. Teleport will also allow u to jump in and get hits on champs getting killed to quickly stack Mejai's soulstealer up.
Marks - Basic magic pen so your vorpal blade hits like a truck, simple enough.
Seals - Hp per/ level to help your survivability and help with your passive dmg increase.
Glyphs - AP per/ level to boost dmg and your absorbs.
Quins - Flat HP to give u a nice boost in HP early on to make people suspect your a tank shen, as well as just to make you less squishy in general, and help with your passive.
Simple, i went into offense just enough to get the cooldown reduction, 15% magic pen, and ignite bonus. I went utility to get more cooldown reduction seeing as it is vital to shens damage. I also get the increased run speed since keeping on your target is of course needed, as well as the 30% neutral buff time increase. Having the 20% cooldown reduction from golem is mandatory, longer you have it, the better.
Items: (this is were Mage shen comes to life)
Sorcerer's Shoes - Speed 2 and 20 magic pen, nuff said
Mejais Soulstealer - +20 Ability Power UNIQUE Passive: Your champion gains 8 ability power per stack, receiving 2 stacks for a kill or 1 stack for an assist. This effect can stack 20 times; you lose a third of your stacks if you die. At 20 stacks, your champion's cooldowns are reduced by 15%. Nabbing early kills with mage shen is surprisingly easy. you hit quite hard with vorpal blade early on, and at level 6 you should have a garaunteed kill between you taunt, vorpal blade, and your ulti if the situation gets sticky. Getting early charges makes a big difference in mage shen.
Rylais Crystal Scepter - +500 Health +80 Ability Power Passive: Dealing spell damage slows the target's movement speed by 35% for 2 seconds (15% for multi-target spells). This items passive 35% slow with vorpal blade means perma slow, its amazing, and ensures kills so easily.
Deathfire Grasp - +60 Ability Power +10 Mana Regen per 5 Sec UNIQUE Passive: Reduces ability cooldowns by 15%. UNIQUE Active: Deals magic damage to target champion equal to 30% of their current health (+3.5% per 100 Ability Power) with a miminum of 200 damage. 1 minute cooldown. This is awesome for multiple reasons, even though the mana regen is useless. Its a second, very heavy nuke. Dash in for a taunt, deathfire grasp them, vorpal blade them, and then they're heavily damaged and slowed not going anywhere, kill ensured.
Lich Bane - +350 Mana +80 Ability Power +30 Magic Resist +7% Movement Speed UNIQUE Passive: 100% chance when an ability is used that your next physical attack deals an additional 100% of your Ability Power in damage. This effect has a 3 second cooldown. Im probably gonna get some **** for getting this item, the mana is useless on it. But, it gives 80 AP, magic resist which is always helpful, move speed on top of your mastery run speed which means ur a FAST SHEN. But most importantly, it makes your auto atk every 3 seconds a nuke. Considering your vorpal blade (with golem buff) will be around 2 second cooldown, the lich bane auto atk bonus dmg will be hitting, often. its well worth the buy.
Zhonya's Ring - +120 Ability Power UNIQUE Passive: Increases Ability Power by 25% UNIQUE Active: Places your champion into Stasis for 2 seconds, rendering you invulnerable and untargetable but unable to take any actions. 90 sec cooldown. Finally, if the game has actually dragged out this long, get zhonya's ring. This will give you a tremendous boost in your AP, and give you some minor survivability.
Nashors Tooth - +50% Attack Speed +55 Ability Power +10 Mana Regeneration per 5 UNIQUE Passive: Reduces ability cooldowns by 25% I didnt choose this in my main build since the atk speed wouldnt help much, since mage shens auto atk is weak, it would really only benefit his HP regen from hits on victims with vorpal blade on them. But the AP and 25% cooldown is why its still viable. 25% reduced cooldown is ridiculous, it would effectively double your current CD (10% from masteries, 15% from deathfire grasp).
Basics on how to play Mage Shen:
I max vorpal blade first since thats your main atk the entire game through, so that needs to be maxed asap. i dont level feint until late game since i find his taunt far more beneficial. If i can get in, taunt for 2 seconds, that essentially gives me time for a minimum of 2 vorpal blades. at early levels its just nice to have to initiate some fights with and allow your teammate you're laning with to get in a hit or two also, which can lead to a kill and stacks on mejais.
You still need to get your ult though at 6 and 11 and such, dont wait till the end just to make yourself more effective killer early on. If you can save ur teammate, that's money from the pocket of ur enemy which makes them less effective and an easier kill for you. On the flip side, you can ulti in when your team is ganking to get some assists for additional stacks as well. Hence the use of teleport in the same way. AP shen is best played like a ganker, and a support all in one. gank whenever you're not saving your teammates ***es.
