I start off with boots of speed and 3 health potions and pick a lane. I play fairly defensive , keeping in mind that I want to stay in lane as long as possible so that when I base back the first time I'll be able to buy my first Sunfire Cape.

If things are a little rough in lane or I push hard for a kill and take some damage, I try and ride it out so I can at least hit level 6 for my ultimate. At level 6, if I really have to, I'll teleport back to base and buy as much of my first sunfire as possible and spend any leftovers on health potions. Immediately after I'll use my ultimate to port back to my partner so I'm back in position quickly leaving the enemy very little room to push in my absence. Also, it's important to tell your partner to stay in lane while you buy so you'll be able to quickly take up your position. Communication is key!

After I pick up my first Sunfire Cape I begin working on defenses to help my survivability against the enemy team. For this build I chose 3 magic resist items to compliment my Sunfire Capes' heavy armor and health bonuses. This option is nice with casters or a mixed damage dealing enemy team. If you're fighting an all melee team I'd probably switch out the boots for Ninja Tabi, Spirit Visage with Randuin's Omen, and Aegis of the Legion with either Atma's Impaler or Rylai's Crystal Scepter. Atma's will give you more damage on your melee attacks while Rylai's will give you more health and some ability power to help with your ability bonuses. Which one you pick for your final item is up to you.

One nice thing about Shen is his ability to defend a turret by taunting nearby enemy champions with Shadow Dash. This will force the enemy champion to attack you and therefore cause the turret to automatically target the enemy champion. This allows you to put some crazy damage onto the enemy and force them to run and possibly die. One thing to note with this is the more health you have, the better. Taunting the enemy, even when next you your turret, is risky and will cause you to take some damage in the exchange so make sure you're not about to die before taunting.
