Not Updated For Current Season
This is a more support style of playing Sona. You should not be aiming for damage at all and you should not die a bunch. She brings awesome support to the table.
(MAIN IDEA) It is in your best interest when playing Sona to get your Cooldown Reduction capped or close to it. That is your number one priority because when this is done you can have all 3 auras up at once.
Early game you have pretty decent burst damage and can dish out a considerable amount of damage but you do not want to die so if it is risky just don't do it. Try and farm as much as possible but when lanning with a carry let them get last hits. It will benefit them more.
Mid game you want to try and help push towers. DO NOT GET GANKED. Sona doesn't have a very good way to escape. If there is a M.I.A back out.
Late game you need to finish up your items. With the cooldown reduction you should be able to cycle through all 3 auras and keep them up. Golem buff will help with mana to be able to cycle between the 3 consistently.
*Side note* In team fights you want to stay back and out of range of most. You are a support champion so you shouldn't be at the front of the battle or near it.
Summoner spells are preference but I chosefor when my whole group is low and needs that extra boost andfor the early game dependency of mana and for when I am in need of mana and don't have Golem buff.
I went Utility Masteries for the mana regen and cooldown reduction mainly. Notice I spec'd into the clarity and heal bonuses. This is also a preference.
Runes are also preference but it should be obvious why I chose the ones I did. Added Cooldown reduction, health for survivability, and mana regen. The magic pen is alright but can be switched out if necessary
is very good item for Sona. You get mana, health, cooldown reduction, and a bonus healing effect that will add on to your Aria of Perseverance.
your boots are really situation but I usually get Mercury Treads for the effect so if I get caught with something that I shouldn't to begin with I can get out fast.
is a must in my eyes. It gives you extra survivability, mana regen, and cooldown reduction not only for yourself but for your team. A perfect item for Sona.
the main thing about this item is the mana bonus that it gives. The added effect is good too.
should be self explanatory. Great AP and amazing defensive effect. 25% added AP is also very very nice.
Aegis of the Legion (every team should have one)
Will of Ancients (if you have a bunch of casters)
Guardian Angel (if targeted)
Sona is by far one of my favorite champs to play and a very fun one at that. Let me know how well you do and tell me what you think of my guide.
