He can stay back when in danger until you can put him back in the game, his ult has great lock synergy with your Equinox (silence) and he scales really well.

Champion Build Guide
I give you the best support for most of the carries that either has some form of CC or slows. Please be mindful that this support can be played as a baiting tank but is NOT a tank (you can have enemies waste skill-shots on you for practically little to no threat at all)
You also need to be mindful about her resources, getting spend will make you useless support for the rest of the fight and will find yourself recalling on most of the fights rather than staying to push/defending for objectives AFTER any fights.
For every time you land a Starcall Rank 5 you have up to 3 free cast on your Astral Infusion with Rejuvenation in it. This means that not only does an Allie get constant heals to stay on the fight, but, you also don't expend all your resources and will find yourself out of them sooner than later.
Landing Starcall is also ensuring that setup for fights are always in your teams favor because the slow may not be that great but when slows are there dodging attacks and spells are MUCH harder - possibly taking down a flash or heal along the process or any trinket.
It gives vicion before it lands so its great for revealing areas when you are out of wards and you need that extra info of the map.
Please be very causes when using this on players when you don't have Rejuvenation up. I would go as far as to say that, if you have to, use your ult first before Astral Infusion if your Rejuvenation's down - otherwise use Astral Infusion as an emergency on players that are press to hard and/or are about to die and of course they already used zhonyas or GA is on CD.

NEVER USE FOR DAMAGE!
Don't use it as a Finisher if there are still 2 or 3 players up on the enemy team
Don't use it for zoning out players
Don't use it on areas that have fog of war (no vision) just because you think there is a champ there - that is what Scarcall is there for!
Don't use it on enemies that are using spells that are UNSTOPPABLE!
