Introduction
With this guide, I have have focused more on attack speed, and armor pen runes. I have two different quints up there because it really depends on your play style. If you like running in, killing someone than running out again, you probably want the movespeed quints. If you like sitting at the back of a team fight, trashing everyone with your basic attacks, the armor pen quints are probably for you.
This chapter will be all about the item choices i have made for Varus and some alternatives. Many people don't think so, but I believe that Black Cleaver is just an amazing item to get first, it gives loads of damage, some attack speed, and armor pen! Along with your runes, this item will just shred your enemies armor. If you are really opposed to the Black Cleaver however, you could replace it with an Infinity Edge and go for a more crit chance like build. The rest of my build is pretty standard, Frozen Mallet to slow them down, Bloodthirster for dps, Phantom Dancer for attack speed, crits, and movespeed.
In this portion of the guide, I will explain Varus's abilities and why I leveled them the way I did.
Piercing Arrow: THIS SKILL IS AMAZING. This ability does ridiculous damage to everything in a line, moves fast, and is hard to dodge. As Varus's main damage tool, this skill needs to be maxed right away! You can charge it up to catch a running foe, point blank no charge it to secure a kill, or just harras away at your lane forever. With a low mana cost, this skill is a must have.
Blighted Quiver: This ability stacks a debuff on your target that causes any other ability's of yours that hit the target to detonate the charges, DOING PRECENTAGE HEALTH DAMAGE. This is what makes Varus such a tank buster. If you get three stacks on someone, then use Piercing Arrow, you can sometimes take away half their health at one time! In addition to stacking a debuff, this skill also makes your attacks to bonus magic damage, giving Varus an advantage early on.
Hail of Arrows: This ability is mostly just a utility spell, it slows in an AOE and reduces healing. You take it early, but max it last as the slow and heal debuff doesn't change with levels. Use this ability on targets running away, or on pesky champions like Fiddle or Mundo that heal to fast to be killed regularly.
Chain of Corruption: This is Varus's ultimate and the ability that gives him pretty good teamfight presence. It is a skillshot nuke that stops at the first Champion hit. After it hits something, it snares them and after the duration runs out, it will switch targets to a nearby champion, also snaring them and doing the same amount of damage. This spell is excellent for teamfights, try to use it at the beginning of the fight so that everyone will get snared.

My summoner spell choices are Ghost and Ignite. Ghost because as stated before, Varus is slow, and Ignite for some extra damage. Use Ghost when running away or just to catch up to someone.
Other Viable summmoner spells would be Flash in the place of Ghost.
Other viable choices are Exhaust and possibly Heal
Though I have seen other people get heal on carries, I don't do it and do not recommend it.

When Playing Varus it is important to stay back in fights and snipe people down with your basic attacks and your Piercing Arrow.
When in a sticky situation, don't hesitate to use Ghost. Spam your Piercing Arrow basically whenever it is off CD(cooldown).
