Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Welcome to my guide..
Well.. I haven't been playing LoL for a long time. I have been playing DotA for 5 years (or more).
In DotA, you had to choose between early, late and balanced. I always picked late even if my character wasn't build this way.
I'm pretty sure most of you know that Volibear is a great late Character for tanking. I'm thinking of him more of a mid-way carry. I've carried a game with voli plenty of times.
It's of great importance to get a good headstart.
Important. Maybe not suited for ranked play
If you ever decide to play Volibear this way, you should always warn your team-mates in the Pick phase. You lose the "tank" qualification. You should be treated more as a carry rather than a guy that can withstand much damage (cause you won't).
Also, I'm not sure if this is suited to Ranked play. I haven't got there yet (as a new LoL player).
When I get there and try this, I'll let you know.
As you may have noticed, I didn't pick a lane.
Voli is so freaking adaptable that he can play either top, jungle or bot.
It's commmon sense he shouldn't go against an AP in mid.
I prefer to tag along with a team-mate with stun or slow. This turns Voli to an extremely efficient early character.
My runes fit more to a carry than to an offtank-AD.
But as I'm used to say, either you go all the way or you don't go at all.
,Greater mark of desolation, and Greater Quintessence of Desolation along with his "Frenzy" can make a fight 1v1 easily won.
However, you are encouraged to use an "armored" rune build along with attack speed.
As an aggresive player, my masteries are aggresive as well. To most of you it would make sense to build him defensively. Whatever suits your style. My suggestion is to play him like this as he is way more efficient when it comes to fight and late gaming. And you want to cause DMG more than being tank in a teamfight.
The items.. For some reason, those items seem to always work out very well for me.
As I see it, those six items go like this:
Zeke's Herald: Passively defensive
: Heavily defensive
: Passively aggresive
: Heavily aggresive
In the beginning, Voli has a great advantage with his running and slow. That makes him a really nice ganger (and a really good team-member to have abide you in the lane). Use this to make some quick kills-assists so you can earn your boots as fast as possible.
If, however, you find yourself having a bad early game, don't go for zeke's before warmog.
Don't forget to use potions when you finish your build. Especially agility and fortitude can give you the edge you need to own the last teamfight.
It's pretty obvious that my aggresiveness keeps on the skill sequence as well.
You see how I prefer instant damage with Roar rather than the neutral rolling thunder.
It turns out that it helps me get more kills and get my build finished asap.
If you're doing extremelly well (talking about 3-4 kills in the first 5-10 minutes), start teching your frenzy instead.
There is not much to say about the ones I chose. Pretty obvious why I chose them.
I will write about choosing instead of . If you see me playing voli, most of the time you'll catch me using and . I do this because I see my beginning in the game CRUCIAL. Even If I die, I'll have to be immediately back. Farm, try to kill, gang etc. Also, it rocks when you are about to gang. (Especially if a teamate has a ward closer to the opponent in the bushes).
It's your own choice. Logic says , I say . Pick what you see fit.
If you have played Volibear a couple of times, you probably farm with Roar. Keep doing that. ;)
My two cents on this subject refer to the usage of Voli's ulti. Most people consantly save his ulti only for teamfights (in best occasions to get the blue aura).
In my opinion this is absoulutely wrong. I see myself using my ulti more often on a bunch of creeps (that have been pushing a lane and are more than 10) than in teamfights.
Of course, I don't mean that you get to spend your ulti without thought.
You should always try and have it available for teamfights as it's the one to get you the kills.
I'm just saying you shouldn't be tightfisted.
Should I always pick him?
You should know that Volibear is a killing machine when he can actually hit. If the opposite team is compiled by Ezreal, Malphite, Lux, Teemo and Ashe (The worst combination that came up to my mind just now) and you go on in a teamfight, you should already know that you'll be kinda useless as an AD-offtank (having in mind they can teamplay).
If you want to go as [Volibear] in such situation, you must really build him as a Tank or even better, don't pick him.
This guide is not complete by any means. As I've been playing LoL only for 6 months or so, I'm open to good-willing criticism. I will fill this out if I see interest in it. I may get to do the Tankish version of this if plenty of you ask of it.
is meant to be played as a bear should. In a classy-attacking way of play.
