Starting your lane.
Start with the starting items from above, get your W first. It is the most damaging ability in Volibear's Aresnal. Make sure not to go all in yet, you're still somewhat squishy early in the game, so be sure that you can take any trade before going in. If an opponent has more range than you, play VERY safe. Volibear can't do much is he is shut down early game. If you do fall into the hands of a very high damaging enemy champion, your passive will keep you alive long enough to get into the turret.
If you're Behind Early game
When behind as Volibear, it's honestly an emergency, CODE RED! The best thing to do is get your main core up by sticking back with minions, do not engage enemy champions and avoid ganks as much as possible. Only go in if you know for a fact you can take them down and do not tower dive EVER if you're behind. Just stick to minions and focus on getting your resistances.
If you're ahead early game
When ahead as Volibear, you can RELAX. Life is good, just get your core items quick as can be. Make sure that your team mates' lanes are not suffering, if they are, assist them to get them back in the game. Even a fed Volibear can not 1v5 a fed team. Make sure your team is doing well before bearing down (Hehe, get it? Bearing down?) on your lane, your team is vital to your capability in team fights.
When team fights Arrive.
If you've been behind previously, try to catch up as much as possible. Once you're at the same level as your team, without a doubt, they will not be able to survive without you. Many people think Volibear is a tank, but he's just tanky, not a tank. He can take a lot of damage with this build, yes, but he can also do amazing amounts of damage! Don't just be a sponge, dish out damage in team fights! You are the initiator, team fights start when you feel like it. Go in with you Q to get squishy but powerful opponents right into your team, they will be dead in seconds while the rest of the enemy team is focused on you. Your team will then converge and finish off or help you kill the enemies you haven't already. You are the sponge of damage, NEVER get behind your team or team fights will go right to the enemy team, and ACE will be all you hear after your death. Make sure to get in front of everyone and take some blows, your passive should keep you up. Make sure to use your W LAST as it deals additional damage based on missing health. Once you've aced, you should be able to grab some turrets or maybe an inhibitor if your team isn't behind. Remember to use your ultimate in team fights, you can hit an entire team at once with powerful force.
On the verge of defeat.
This is quite obviously, bad news. The important thing to remember is your tankiness. You are the best one to defend the turrets remaining, your team will assist you when you try to score an ACE, as discussed in "When Team fights Arrive" and ACE is your only chance of winning, and you, as the tank, are the one to ensure it. You need to make sure the enemy team focuses on you, much like discussed in the above chapter. Once you've dealt all your damage with your ultimate, your team will assist in cleaning up, hopefully you get a kill or two out of the endeavor. Once you've aced, RUSH THE TURRETS. This is very important, and one of the most disregarded purposes of a tank. When you have your full build, or close to it, you can definitely tank turrets, they won't stop you. DO NOT wait for minions, they will only slow the approach. Step into the tower first, and you and your team can destroy it while you take all the damage. If you follow the above build, it should barely scratch your health bare by the time you're done with it. After one turret, back to your base and defend. Repeat and until you get their nexus turrets and claim Victory!
