Your not a glass cannon with an escape ability like Master Yi, so if your gonna fight you have to make sure you can kill all your enemies and still walk away, because you cant teleport or leap or any of that BS ***** ****.
Standard Melee DPS runes, ArmPen, HP per level, MR per level, helps avoid ALOT of damage, most champions do magic damage, so magic resistance is very necessary.
Start with three talon strike to try for first blood, but dont use it to START the fight, only to finish it, its starting cooldown is too long for you to be able to use it to start the fight then chase down the runner.
Get audacious charge next so you can kill better, then battle cry so you can farm more efficiently and kill better.. then level up in this order: charge, TTS, BC - CS when available.
Boots + Pots, so you can chase down or run away from those first blood fights.
Mercury's treads next because it helps you kill and move around more.
Then get a Emblem of Valor so you have battle longevity and can farm minions for hp.
Phage for hp, damage and the chance to slow your target when you hit them to assist with kills.
Now you have good offensive base, time to get some defense.
I really love Aegis of the Legion because it offers a really nice balanced defensive enhancement + gives you some bonus damage + helps keep your teams alive in team fights and give them a little more damage + it works on minions so you can push lanes better.
also its really cheap. Late game you could sell it for like a guardian angel's but early thru mid its really balanced for its price.
Finish up starks so you finally have atk speed and some more armor pen and lifesteal, frozen mallet so they CANT run away from you anymore.
These are your core items, after this you have two situation slots,
I put a madred's and a SOTD because if your doing good, why not start doing better.
Other Options are Randuin's, Guardian Angel so you can tower/team dive, Black Cleaver, banshee's, ect. whatever the situation calls for.
yeah this allows you to win melee fights early on and late game.
Ignite, For killing regen tanks /quick runners/ anyone.
Ghost: chase down or run awawy.
Cleanse: Be a tank for your team and take the enemies CC then cleanse out of it.
Heal: Helps Prevent early ganks, doesnt do too much late game, but having some more hp when your fighting at the enemy teams towers doesnt hurt.
