‎‎ ‎ Introduction

Welcome to another article of LEC coverage! Only 2 more weeks of the Summer split remain, and it's getting very tense, both on the rift as well as our Fantasy rankings! 2 teams have already locked playoffs, 2 spots remain with 6 teams left, hungry for the trophy and spots in the Season finals. Without further ado, let's dive into it.

‎‎ ‎ Fantasy Leaderboards

Fraikon remains at the top for now! Top performers such as Yike and BrokenBlade in their team have helped to keep opponents at bay, but will they remain in first place? The gap between Fraikon and runner-up Irygtnjythnjrf is only 2 points and 2 more weeks of games remaining mean anything can still happen. Red003 fittingly rounds out our top 3 after ranking 10th place last week. Who will ultimately prevail?

‎‎ ‎ Current Group Stage Bracket Overview

The biggest revelation of the weekend is most certainly EXCEL, who took down MAD and SK to become our first team to lock top 3! It's been a hard season for them, but they're certainly peaking at the right time! Meanwhile in the other group G2 is on another dominant rampage. They haven't dropped a game in their Bo3s and look absolutely amazing this split.

Fnatic, coming in hot during the Summer regular season, surprisingly (or not) lost to SK yet again and now face an early exit as they will be taking on Spring champions MAD Lions. The latter haven't looked very hot all split long, but the fact that one of them is guaranteed to end in 7th-8th place is wild. And the winner will be facing a reborn SK. Not an easy task either way. Lots of work to do for KOI and Heretics as well, since Spring revelation BDS is quite the final hurdle as well.

‎‎ ‎ Day 1 Recap

Group A - EXCEL vs MAD Lions

^
VS
^
🏁 Game One

First game on a new patch, and XL were immediately willing to bring out new picks. They played fairly standard during the regular season, but with Rumble, Rell and Lee Sin picked they seemed willing to change things up. MAD played the first 10 minutes cleanly, with the first drakes and 2 quick picks. But XL wasn't content with letting MAD retreat. Peach displayed his excellent Lee Sin mechanics and picked up a triple kill very early on. In just a couple more minutes the XL jungler was 5/0. Meanwhile MAD's botlane gained some kills back. But fortunately for XL Odoamne was finally freed from tank duty and he put up a certified top gap on his signature Rumble. Both teams decided to show us some slapstick with a horrifying sequence around 17 minutes, but XL walked out with the advantage, 4 kills for 2. There remained a silver lining for MAD though. XL overchased and Nisqy picked up 2 kills for free. The MAD midlaner was the only one on his team with a sizeable advantage, but his team seemed to have a collective off-day. At 28 minutes XL clean-aced MAD in a straight up teamfight and finished game 1 there and then.

🏁 Game Two

Back to the drawing board for MAD, who went for an entirely different draft this time around. XL took the first blood after a messy sequence, but MAD stepped up more regardless. Chasy got some revenge on Odo with a solo kill. Just a K'Sante doing K'Sante things. In the next 5-10 minutes both teams would slam their heads against the wall on the botside. It wasn't peak League of Legends, but it was entertaining. Kills remained equal though MAD had the slight gold lead. XL showed they could equal MAD in scrappiness and shifted the momentum by shutting down Nisqy's LeBlanc, MAD's most fed member. They immediately started up the Baron and just were more decisive in that call. MAD looked unsure on what to do and just lost the objective without much of a hassle. XL could never truly pass MAD in gold though, so the game went back to 5v5 teamfights. Both teams have shown great prowess at teamfighting, so both sides traded blow after blow. It wasn't until shortly before the 40 minute mark, Elder drake up, but XL didn't need the objective. They went straight for MAD's throat, tore the Lions apart and rushed right across the finish line. After the incredibly harsh Winter and Spring splits, suddenly XL look like one of our top contenders. And that against our Spring split champions, who find themselves condemned to the lower bracket once again.

Group A - SK Gaming vs Fnatic

^
VS
^
🏁 Game One

SK hadn't lost to Fnatic yet in 2023, but still Fnatic was the clear favourite coming into this match after their impressive regular season showing. It was SK who showed the best meta read, while Fnatic drafted similar to weeks prior. What ensuied was a low-kill game won and lost by macro. (What a contrast with the previous series.) Fnatic felt content playing it slow with their Azir and Zeri. No problem SK thought, as Irrelevant ruled the sidelanes, even getting a solo kill onto Oscarinin. SK's toplaner has been a rock for them all year long. SK showed great discipline and restraint throughout the early game. Small advantages and singular picks were before backing out and resetting was enough for them. They suddenly accelerated the game by going for a 20 minute Baron. They did a great job at preventing Razork from entering the pit, and so SK got away with a free objective. At 30 minutes the kill score was only 5 against 1, but SK's gold lead had grown to almost 10k. One teamfight that initially looked good for Fnatic and SK could close out the game after a masterclass on macro.

🏁 Game Two

Fnatic started fiercly to game 2. Razork had a great early game and Oscarinin got the better of Irrelevant in lane. SK didn't really found an answer, though importantly a return kill went over to Exakick, which gave SK a leeway back into the game. Behind or not, the disadvantagous gamestate didn't prevent SK from starting another 20 minute Baron. You'd think Fnatic would have expected it by now, but they were caught completely off guard. Doss and Sertuss did a good job at keeping the late responding Fnatic at bay, and the whole of SK got alive with the objective. With gold now even, SK could take Fnatic head-on a bit later. 2 back-to-back won teamfights for the side of SK, without even losing a single member. Another Baron on top and Fnatic's hopes evaporated. Credit where due; Fnatic did a good job defending their base and stalling the game. Eventually they took a desperate shot at a Baron of their own, but Markoon turned up with a 2-man Keeper's Verdict, which gave SK the opportunity to easily win the fight and claim the final Baron for their own. Fnatic's resolve was finally broken and thus SK advanced to face XL while Fnatic still hasn't taken a game off SK all year long.

‎‎ ‎ Day 2 Recap

Group B - Team Heretics vs Team BDS

^
VS
^
🏁 Game One

Both teams didn't hold back any cards right off the bat. Ziggs botlane and Kai'Sa midlane for Team Heretics while Crownie paid homage to Uzi with an exotic Vayne pick. The game itself wasn't about the individual matchups, but rather about both teams linking up whenever possible. The volatile topside saw a lot of action with both teams trading over kills, though all things considered the game early game was fairly uneventful. It was only til the 4th drake that things really got going. Vetheo popped off on Kai'Sa and Heretics traded 4 kills for 1. A Baron followed and finally they could grow a significant gold lead. With AP Kai'Sa and Ziggs poke, Heretics siege was insane. Meanwhile BDS didn't have enough hard engage to really threaten Heretics. TH played it slow but steady and took down BDS in game 1.

VOD

^
🏁 Game Two

For game 2 BDS went back to things they're more comfortable on and an easier to execute draft. We have to highlight Zeri for Crownie despite the pick falling out of meta recently, and more importantly Lillia for Sheo into 3 tanks on Heretics' side. The latter also locked in Seraphine botlane, another pick Flakked is somewhat known for. Heretics played around their topside again, but the game only really broke open around 14 minutes. Labrov landed a 4-man Magnet Storm to win an important teamfight, and BDS took several towers on the back of that. Through just one play BDS suddenly found themselves with over 5k gold lead. Next teamfight it was Sheo's time to shine as he landed a 4-man Lilting Lullaby, after which BDS smashed the fight 5 for 2. They would've ended the game if not for their lack of waves to play around, but that only postponed their victory. BDS dominated the final teamfight even more to equalise the series.

🏁 Game Three

Both teams clashed at 3 minutes in already. Vetheo picked up first blood, but traded his life over already moments later. Both teams continued to trade over kills, with neither party looking very clean. Crownie died tanking turret in a bot dive while Evi went in way too deep into Sheo's waiting hands. Heretics eventually got another kill onto Adam, but the whole sequence had cost them so much time and members that Crownie and nuc were left alone to take turrets mid and bot. The BDS midlaner especially had a great series and went super-saiyan in the next teamfight where he picked up a triple kill as Jayce. BDS immediately turned their attention to the Baron, which they secured without a fight. Heretics turned up too late to the party, so the Baron-empowered BDS found another few free kills on their plate. BDS spent the next few minutes patiently cracking open Heretics' base, until they could eventually deliver the final blow to win the series. This also meant BDS are the 3rd team to qualify for Season Finals, congrats!

Group B - G2 Esports vs KOI

^
VS
^
🏁 Game One

Fairly standard drafts on both sides, though G2 immediately showed their confidence by locking Kalista for Hans. And Yike picked up the Kanavi approved Rell jungle (Rungle?) for himself. It was KOI however with the first initiative. Malrang camped toplane so Szygenda could build a huge lead for himself. G2 logically put some effort towards the botlane, though with mixed success as Yike's Rungle is easily countered by Advienne's Alistar. KOI teamfought well, so by midgame they were actually ahead of G2. Though most of that advantage was subsequently thrown away by Szygenda's overaggressiveness. With both teams now at equal footing, G2 picked apart KOI in a split up fight, which gave room for them to take the Baron. G2 had also quietly been stacking drakes and with the 4th one coming up, KOI needed to contest the Infernal soul. Szygenda landed a great Slicing Maelstrom and for a split second the fight seemed to end in KOI's favour, but Mikyx and Caps stayed alive long enough to turn it around with their massive AoE CC. They picked up their dragon soul and things started looking very dire for the side of KOI. The teams eventually clashed once more in the midlane, but G2 was too far ahead in gold by then. G2 took game 1 after overcoming an early deficit.

VOD

^
VS
^
🏁 Game Two

Lots of action around the topside again. (Malrang seriously does seem to hate BrokenBlade for some reason.) Though this time G2 was mostly in control. At 15 minutes around the Herald, we got an early extended 5v5, and G2's double marksmen comp reigned supreme in such long fights. G2 really came alive and bested KOI in the next teamfight as well, which led to several turrets taken with the help of the Rift Herald. This extra control allowed them to get an easy Baron. While G2 sieged the topside, Szygenda desperately tried to find a winning fight as he teleported in from behind, but KOI was too behind at that point. The Renekton was blown up instantly, and then BrokenBlade appeared with a flank of his own. KOI managed to hold on a little longer, but in their last stand they couldn't even take down a single G2 member and so G2 won game 2 in dominant fashion. KOI will face Heretics in the lower bracket while G2 was set to face BDS for a first chance at playoffs.

‎‎ ‎ Day 3 Recap

Group A - EXCEL vs SK Gaming

^
VS
^
🏁 Game One

While the early games are generally fairly quiet in this meta, this game was most certainly not. Lots of skirmishes around the topside from very early on, which led to Odoamne going 3/0 in just a couple of minutes. Though XL couldn't even release their breath before SK already shut him down. Blows left and right, and gold remained almost dead even for 15 minutes. SK stole the 3rd dragon to deny XL soul point, and from that moment on they seemed to control. Just like in their series against Fnatic, SK went straight for the Baron at 20 minutes. And yes, XL did not expect it either. SK secured the objective, but only at a price. XL took down 3 SK members so the value of the Baron wasn't that groundbreaking. Once the Baron buff had expired, we had 5v5 on our hands in the midlane. Odoamne teleported in to turn the tide and XL suddenly with huge momentum on their side. Baron was up, went their way for free and XL ran away with the lead. About 5k gold lead for the side of XL, probably the highest thus far that game. Additionally XL had the Mountain soul and SK clearly had trouble melting XL's giant frontline. When XL swiftly caught out Markoon and Sertuss, there was no way for SK to stop the ensuing onslaught. Not a clean game for certain, but an entertaining one. And it's XL who took the lead in the series!

VOD

^
VS
^
🏁 Game Two

XL was in a comfortable position now, so they went back to a simple front-to-back scaling composition. SK's draft was similar, but had some more tools to make plays earlier on too, like Sertuss' Akali. So contrary to last game, now we got a super slow early game. The only early action consisted of both toplaners getting abused and killed once. SK got the better of XL in laning though and at 20 minutes they had over a 3k gold lead. A couple minutes later it was XL's turn to start a Baron however. Markoon's Keeper's Verdict knocking Peach miles away was the sign for SK to force an engage. While only 3 champions in total died during the split fight, SK had the advantage in momentum and turned to the free Baron themselves. The Baron buff and another few picks onto XL members were enough to crack open the enemy base. XL's final stand was of no avail as Sertuss flexed his supreme Akali mechanics again to buy time and space for his team to clean up XL.

VOD

^
VS

🏁 Game Three

Game 2 had clearly given SK a confidence boost. They immediately came out the gate swinging for the last game. Markoon with succesful ganks bot and toplane in just 4 minutes. XL struck back by stealing a Herald, but they overstayed their welcome so SK eventually got 2 kills in return. XL stabilised the game come midgame though and SK's gold lead was already gone. Both ADCs got a couple kills in their pocket and Abbedagge got quite fed on LeBlanc. Then for the next 10 minutes the Baron dance became the name of the game as both teams skirmished. Abbedagge (more like Fakerdagge) proved to be an absolute menace in these situations. All tension eventually turned into climax. While SK was occupied by the slippery LeBlanc, XL focused on the objective and they were able to secure it in time. Suddenly a huge swing in gold and no way for SK to stop XL. Therefor XL guarantees top 3 this split, and with just 1 Bo5 victory they will secure Season Finals. What a turnaround from them after the catastrophic Winter and Spring splits.

Group B - G2 Esports vs Team BDS

^
VS
^
🏁 Game One

The second important series to decide which team will play in the playoffs upper bracket against XL. G2 the obvious favourite, but we've seen how well BDS can play. What we can say for certain is that neither team held back as game 1 revolved into a bloodbath. We even had a level 1 5v5 on our hands, which BDS won with 2 kills going over to them already. Sheo proceeded to be everywhere in the next few minutes. Though his botlane seemingly had an off-day as they quite clumsily overextended and died to 4 G2 members. Shout-out to Yike as well though, both junglers played a fantastic early game. The game was still relatively even until 5v5 around the 2nd drake. Mikyx with a beautiful Magnet Storm to win the fight. Though Sheo still secured the dragon. Then followed skirmish after skirmish. After toplane shenanigans G2 saw a window to start the Baron, but they had more trouble holding off BDS than expected. Only Yike and Hans Sama were alive to profit from the Baron buff, so all things considered not the worst outcome for BDS. Moments later it even looked like BDS would win a teamfight, but BrokenBlade and Hans came in clutch to deepen out the gold gap even further. Afterwards G2 could just run over BDS. So by 28 minutes game 1 was all done and dusted.

VOD

^
VS
^
🏁 Game Two

Game 2 saw the return of Hans Sama's Kalista, while BrokenBlade took a page out of Adam's book by locking in Sett into the latter's Olaf. The spicy toplane picked immediately showed its value for G2 as BB got a quick solo kill at just 2 minutes in. BDS soon struck back though with beautiful mid/jungle teamwork to rack up 2 kills against Caps and Yike. Back to toplane, where Adam just decides to run at BB and solo kill him in return. Importantly Hans Sama picks up the BDS' toplaner bounty moments later though. Ironically Adam is the one to finally shut down Hans in return, a couple minutes later. So entering midgame the gamestate was even. Until the Caps decided to win the fight for 3rd drake. The G2 midlaner picked up a triple kill on Tristana in stylish fashion. BDS found a glimmer of hope when they beautifully picked off Caps later, though BrokenBlade got so much work done, so much space created for Hans Sama to do his thing, so G2 still won the fight that was technically a 4v5. BDS saw a miraculous Baron as their potential leeway back into the game. Meanwhile Caps was splitting bot against nuc. The latter teleported to join the fight in the river, as Caps was an instant too late to cancel it. Somehow G2 still won the fight despite all odds, and they were even able to get the Baron buff on all 5 members going into the final moments of the game. Now it was truly over for BDS. G2 ran a final victory lap and Caps topped off his great game with a pentakill. G2 will face XL in the first Bo5 of Summer.

‎‎ ‎ Week 2 Preview

📺 Saturday - Games To Watch

MAD Lions vs Fnatic Last time these 2 teams met, it was an absolute banger. Fnatic was a couple auto attacks from knocking out MAD, but the latter prevailed and even won the entire split. Whatever happens this time, a big team is bound to make an early exit. Fnatic came in hot this split, but one more series loss and their entire season is over. MAD already have Season finals secured, but going out now would be quite the fall from grace for the reigning champions. Either way spectacle guaranteed.

Team Heretics vs KOI Spanish derby in the lower bracket. Heretics had a solid showing in the regular season, but somewhat surprisingly, fell short to BDS. KOI has been very up and down this year, but in their highs they are still a force to be reckoned with. Both teams need a victory in order to stay alive in the quest for Season finals.

📺 Sunday - Games To Watch

SK Gaming vs TBD SK have been decent this year all around and despite their loss against XL they looked competitive. On paper they shouldn't have a problem taking on MAD, and while Fnatic's ceiling looks high, SK has bested them time and time again. If SK wins this Bo3, then they do not just make it into playoffs again, but they qualify for Season Finals. Either way already a great year for SK compared to previous years, but that would be the cherry on top.

Team BDS vs TBD Although they lost 2-0 to G2, there's no shame in losing like that to the team that looks head and shoulders above the rest of LEC. BDS still showed some great things and if they really start to click again, this is a team that can make finals as proven last split. With either Heretics or KOI coming out, they should at the very least have a good chance at making top 4.

📺 Monday - Games To Watch

EXCEL vs G2 Esports It's remains suprising that it's actually XL that will be challenging G2 for the first spot in Summer Finals. If they win this Bo5, they more importantly lock in Season Finals. With their good recent form they might even have a good shot at contesting a spot at Worlds, but one obstacle at a time. G2 looks insanely strong this split, perhaps even stronger than during Winter. Every single member has been playing out of their minds, so they will be the clear favourites coming into this match. In return XL could revel in the role of underdog. Even losing here would give them a second shot at making finals. But imagine if XL could continue their underdog story by besting G2? Either way a very exciting matchup.

‎‎ ‎ Conclusion

This wraps up the article for this week. Don't forget to tune into the games this weekend, many games have huge implications regarding Season finals and eventually Worlds qualification! Let us know who you are rooting for.

Remember that there's still a few more days to update your Captain or use up your sell tokens if you think that a player you have is going to be putting your fantasy team at risk. If one of the top point earners is in your team, consider making them your captain this week! Also keep in mind that while you can switch your Captains between each game day, you only have one single sell token!

The Playoffs stage starts on Monday, but this time there won't be a wipe phase in the 24h between the last group stage game and the first Bo5. Sell-tokens will be refreshed however. Planning is key!
