The first ever Swiss stage at Worlds has wrapped up! We hope you've all enjoyed it as much as we did. The format has brought many exciting moments with the draw shows, banger matchups and upsets.

Formats change, but Eastern dominance did not. 7 out of 8 LPL and LCK teams made it through, with only Dplus KIA falling short. North-America can be very happy with a team in knockouts again; NRG for the first time in their history. For the EU fans (including myself) it's been a remarkable edition in the other sense. For the first time since 2014 no LEC team qualified for knockouts.
Above you can see an overview of teams eliminated or qualified for quarterfinals.

Below you can see the full results of all 5 rounds of Swiss.
Some notable matches and events include:
  • G2 defeating DK and Weibo Gaming back to back. Both games were messy and highly entertaining as well.
  • The day 1 banger of BLG vs KT. 2 top teams battled it out in a back-and-forth banger, which was also one of the longest games of the tournament so far.
  • GAM knocking out Team Liquid. VCS teams are never to be underestimated, as history has proven. Last year GAM had a hand in sending TES home, this time an LCS team was taken out.
  • NRG upsetting G2 in a highly dominant series to make quarterfinals. G2 looked really good up to that point, while eternal underdog NRG brought out the hammer to secure a historic quarterfinals for North-America.

It's all been smooth sailing for Gen.G so far. After an easier matchup against GAM, they went up against LCK nemesis T1 again. But thanks to a good performances from notably Doran and Delight, GEN convincingly put them aside once more. Then in their qualification match they violently put a dent into G2's confidence with a dominant 2-0 win to secure an early pole position in quarterfinals. Yet to drop a single game at Worlds, Gen.G remains one of the favourite to win it all.

T1 surprisingly had to put in work against Team Liquid, but they pulled through in the end. Their second round draw wasn't as favourable with Gen.G besting them in Korean civil war. In the 1-1 pool they proceeded to draw another LCS team with Cloud9, who they near perfect-gamed. Then an MSI rematch against BLG emerged from the draw, which T1 won this time around. After a shaky start T1 seems to be ramping up as usual. The same roster that was one game away from winning Worlds 2022 remains a formidable opponent to anyone.

Ever since picking T1 over HLE in LCK playoffs, KT's luck keeps getting worse. First round BLG, which gave us one of the best games of Swiss, but one they narrowly lost. Next up DK, who they did beat handily. Then another Asian team with Weibo. Good game by KT, despite a couple heart attacks along the way. For their first Bo3 KT continued in LPL playoffs with a close series against LNG. Despite having the better early games, their opponent was just stronger at teamfighting. KT fans had to suffer until the last day of Swiss to secure quarters with a certified 'clean 2-0, nothing to see here' against DK again. KT fought tooth and nail for their quarterfinals spot, but it's not getting any easier from here on out.

DK's early exit from Worlds 2023 may have shocked many fans around the world, but to regular LCK viewers it's not that big of a surprise. Inconsistent play along with a not-so-easy draw for the first two rounds marked their demise. DK fumbled a comeback with Baron steal against G2 and then underwent the law of the strongest vs KT. Easy draws vs BDS and GAM kept DK alive a bit longer, but in the end big brother KT came back to haunt them. Even good early games and a dragon soul in game 1 couldn't prevent them from going out in a 2-0. The first LCK/LPL team to fall this year, heartbreaking for players like Deft, ShowMaker and Canyon.

It is to the surprise of absolutely no one that JDG was the first team to qualify for quarterfinals. BDS held on bravely for quite a while, but JDG's class came through as always. Round 2 promised more resistance with the 8th match against BLG, but JDG has been their krytonite for an entire year now. In the 2-0 bracket JDG then faced the LNG that has pushed them the hardest in recent times. Blue side seems to be very strong on the Worlds patch, so no surprise both teams won a dominant game before JDG put order to matters in game 3. Going into quarters they are still THE favourites to complete the golden road, though a tough bracket awaits them.

Just like at MSI, BLG has taken a slower start compared to other teams. They were given the hardest possible draw against KT on day 1, but fought tooth and nail to win in the end. Next round the inevitable JDG came out for round 8, and unfortunately it appears BLG's mental block against their nemesis is still present. At 1-1 they completely outclassed Fnatic before meeting T1 again, but they couldn't replicate their MSI success this time around. So BLG had to wait til the very last game of Swiss to secure quarters. G2 gave them hell, but eventually BLG's class pulled through. If they do fix some issues, BLG has the skill and experience to make a deep run.

Dubbed a shadow favourite to win Worlds by analysts and viewers around the globe, LNG hasn't disappointed yet. They simply outclassed their Western opponents with Fnatic and C9, before meeting JDG in the 2-0 bracket. A dominant game 2 showed they could go toe to toe with the LPL champions, but JDG's side select for game 3 would be too much to overcome. A second chance to qualify for knockouts came with a showdown against fellow 3rd seed KT Rolster from the LCK. Despite slow starts in all games, LNG teamfought their way to victory. In quarters LNG is set for a difficult road, but if they were to claw their way to semis, their ambitions could become very concrete.

Not the most convincing look for WBG so far, but qualification is all that matters in the end right? A massive victory against LCS champions NRG gave a glimpse of their potential, but a thrown game against G2 and deserved loss to KT brought the team on the brink of elimination. MAD Lions put up a better fight than the 2-0 match score would indicate, and Fnatic would exploit Weibo's weaknesses enough to bring it down to a single game. However Light and Crisp's Caitlyn and Lux clutched WBG towards quarters. Only time will tell how far this inconsistent team can go. On a positive note TheShy has been in much better form compared to his showing in LPL this year.

G2 had high ambitions and publicly voiced them. 2 wins against DK and WBG nonetheless put power to those words. But some shakiness in both games foreshadowed tragedies yet to come. A crushing yet expected 2-0 defeat to Gen.G dealt a first dent to G2's confidence. The next round against NRG appeared to be an easy way to quarterfinals, but a spectular NRG wouldn't have any of it. So suddenly G2 found themselves in a do-or-die match against BLG. Game 2 gave hope at a happy end, but G2's resolve finally broke during the final game. A heartbreaking end to an otherwise fantastic year for G2.

Historically Fnatic always shows up at Worlds. And despite being eliminated already, they have nothing to be ashamed of. They were outclassed by LNG in the first round, but bounced back vs GAM. With BLG they drew another formiddable opponent whom they lost to. Which brought Fnatic and C9 together on the verge of an early exit. Fnatic lost game 1 but held on incredibly long. Then in the next games they succesfully adjusted and survived for another round. A game 1 victory vs Weibo brought out some early EUphoria, but all for naught. A questionable Alistar pick in the deciding game will continue to haunt Fnatic, but in the end they were simply outclassed by stronger opponents.

MAD got one of the best draws of any Western team. But unfortunately they were unable to capitalize. Their performance against Cloud9 wasn't very good, but they readjusted against fellow LEC team BDS. A long and messy game vs NRG ended up as a second loss to NA as MAD were unable to deal with NRG's Senna and Tahm Kench. MAD showed a better performance in their last-chance round vs Weibo, especially in game 1, but they were eliminated regardless by the Chinese team. Amid current rumours it's uncertain whether MAD Lions as we know it will continue next year, so even though 2023 ended on a sour note, they deserve lots of credit for making Worlds 4 years in a row.

Team BDS already did their fair share of heavy lifting by destroying Golden Guardians in the WQS and reverse-sweeping their way through play-ins. As a 4th seed their draw was always gonna be hard, and with JDG coming out first that's an understatement. Credit is due though, BDS held on for far longer than hoped. Though still a league below JDG. Then a European get-together vs MAD followed, but the latter had their number. For the 0-2 round Mr. Ref once again did not show any mercy towards BDS and mercilessly gave them Damwon. Logical early exit from the Swiss stage, but Team BDS can be very proud of their year.

Who would've guessed NRG to be this year's only Western team in quarterfinals? They got crushed by WBG in round 1, but after that luck has been in their favour. NRG easily disposed of fellow NA team TL, after which they faced MAD. Their good meta read gave them the edge in that gruesome game and so after 3 games they were close to qualifying for knockouts. G2 promised to be a tough opponent, but NRG showed up massively on the day to defeat them in clean 2-0 fashion. The draw certainly helped a little, but a huge achievement for NRG and the LCS regardless. The faithful have been rewarded.

Last time Worlds was in Korea in 2018, C9 made semis after sweeping Afreeca. No such success this time though. Things looked great after round 1 with a win against EU's MAD Lions. But then the draws got harder and harder. T1 nearly perfect-gamed Cloud9 and instead of a more managable opponent, C9 had to face off against LNG. Another devastating loss, but the final chance against Fnatic promised to be an even matchup. Cloud9 even stomped game 1. But as to repeat 2018 history, Fnatic turned things around. With that Cloud9's year is over, and though that is result is within expectations, be assured the org is already looking to make sure next year will be better.

As Pyosik so beautifully put: "God has abandoned us, but we will enjoy it". Starting off Worlds against T1 is always gonna be tough, but TL played fairly well in that opening game. Especially Pyosik playing like a man possessed gave them a fighting chance. But in just one immaculate teamfight by T1, those hopes evaporated. Round 2 saw TL facing NRG, but the 3rd seed logically lost to their superiors. Team Liquid were about to be eliminated, but the draw against GAM looked doable. Unfortunately for TL, fought viciously, taking game 1 and 3 in an upset win. So Team Liquid became the first team to be eliminated from Worlds 2023. Better luck next year.

No pressure for the last remaining minor region team, who had already done their job by making it through play-ins. And guess what, they've even gone above and beyond. First games were lost to clearly better teams with Gen.G and Fnatic, but in their first Bo3 a vulnerable Team Liquid presented itself. GAM smelled blood and sent LCS' 3rd seed home on the back of a great Kiaya performance. In round 4 they were dealt a bad hand in DK, against who they were just outclassed across the board. Still a good Worlds performance for GAM, who have redeemed themselves from their disappointing MSI showing.

Thursday - November 2
The first quarterfinals is a rematch between NRG and Weibo Gaming. NRG is obviously the underdog again, but on paper this is the best draw they could've gotten. Weibo is the superteam that has yet to show their full potential. On the other hand NRG is riding positive momentum, making top 8 as a team that's more than the sum of their parts. It's a tough task, but the West may have some hope at an upset and potential semi-finals.

The legendary Xiaohu vs rising star Palafox is an obvious point to highlight, but credit is due to Contractz who played out of his mind vs G2. With WeiWei he has a strong opponent ahead of him however.
VS
NRG
Weibo Gaming

Friday - November 3
This matchup looks like it could've been a worthy grand finals, and the winner certainly has a good chance to make it all the way. At MSI BLG crushed Gen.G in 3-0 fashion, but the odds seem more even this time. Gen.G is looking like the better team at the moment, but through BLG's long and rocky road they may have found renewed vigour. The slow, calculated Korean style of Gen.G or the chaotic, teamfight-oriented LPL style of BLG?

Peyz vs Elk, the battle of this year's newly discovered superstars deserves a highlight. And question is whether an unleashed Doran can stand up against Bin.
VS
Gen.G
BLG

Saturday - November 4
Well, it truly appears God has abandoned KT. After 5 gruesome draws every round, no one was surprised to see JDG come out for quarters. KT's ceiling is high, but they still have some issues to fix. While JDG is arguably the best team in the world. The LPL champion should have no trouble disposing KT, but if the rollercoaster flies high (and no one gets excited), who knows what could happen? It's gonna be a banger series either way.

In the jungle it's looking out for Kanavi and Cuzz. The former one of, if not the best jungler in the world, the latter is quietly having a fantastic tournament so far. Same could be said of Aiming, who has a enormous task at hand in bringing down Ruler.
VS
JD Gaming
KT Rolster

Sunday - November 5
Last but certainly not least a battle for the ages between two titans. Style-wise both teams are pretty similar. LNG is one of the slowest LPL teams, but makes up for proactivity through teamfighting. T1 happens to be excellent teamfighters themselves. Both teams were set to make it far through the tournament, but now one is destined to fall here. Both also pushed JDG to 5 games before. The result of this series could be devastating.

There are interesting matchups across the board, including star botlaners GALA vs Gumayusi. And obviously a shout-out has to go to Scout vs Faker. Once pupil and teacher, now formidable midlaners of their own right.

That's all for now! Thank you for making it this far. We hope you've enjoyed the tournament as much as we have. And the best is yet to come; at every step we're getting closer to crowning the 2023 world champions! We'll be back before the grand finals with an special article to analyze and hype up our finalists. See you sson!

banger content.

Lowkey, I think the series betweeen LNG vs T1 is going to be the most hype one. Both of them are getting scarier every day passing and are starting to become the well-oiled machine needed to take everyone. I put my vote on either of them winning the tournament.

looking at it here, I never even clocked just how easy MAD's draw was :| but EU will win in 2024
