Does Doran's shield have any purpose at all?

Can anyone tell me if this item still serves any purpose or if it's just trash? After the nerf I always took + 5 pots over the instead, if I want a more defensive/sustained start, because it seems to work so much better right now in overall.

is still a pretty decent starting item and a lot of laners can benefit from it.

Useful against who deals a lot of true damage to you (so armour isn't as useful) or just early all-in champions, or champions that deal mixed damage (, , ).

Not all top laners start with it anymore though - , , , , etc, can all start with something else, like (in the case of ) or .

But for standard tanks like , , and so on, is a fine start.

When considering vs , you're thinking about sustain vs all-in potential. I'd just take the one that seems more appropriate.

There are also many support players who like to take a as first item when going talisman of ascension (since it lacks any combat stats whatsoever).

what do you do against an ap champion that is likely to auto attack you a lot, like teemo for example

The proper start would be into a if you're even or behind (going damage if ahead). D-Shield will work to mitigate mixed damage and then an early will mitigate their penetration runes and then some.

I dunno, I think I'll still start up with that if I'm melee and if it builds into something useful lategame, such as for . Autoattacks are still autoattacks that deal physical damage, and I think there's no real efficient start to build against early magic damage.
