    I would say top or mid.

    Mid is probably better because the lane is shorter. Also, Heimerdinger support is a decent-ish alternative if you want to cheese.

    If you care about statistics, he is played slightly more often with a bit more success in middle. Still viable in both roles though, obviously.

    Well, mid is usual to see a Heimer, and it has a couple of reasons:
    1.- He keeps constant pressure on the lane and that means vision of that area almost all the time.
    2.- He is one of the hardest champions to gank due to his turrets and the retracted he is in lane, but if he overextend in the line and get away of the turrets he is a easy piece to deal with.
    3.- An awesome capability to help jungle with dragon or even make it by him alone.
