League of Legends (LoL) Question: Thresh and Gold items.

    Thresh and Gold items.

Thinking of reworking my Thresh guide as the support meta's items have shifted quite a bit. I haven't extensively tested it, but I have a theory that Spellthief's Edge/ Frostfang is the new core for Thresh, due to Doran's Shield nerfs as well as Ancient Coin nerfs. He can utilize the bonus damage, as well as the gold gen pretty easily with his auto attacks.

Obviously he wouldn't sit on this item, and sell it in favor of Talisman of ascension or even Face of the mountain later.

    Thoughts?

I don't think he can utilize Spellthief's Edge as well as other supports do. Relic Shield and Doran's Shield give him some survivability which he needs as an initiator/peel/tank support, which he is.

I'm not saying that it couldn't work, but I doubt that it will be better than Ancient Coin, Relic Shield or Doran's Shield.

Since his AA ranged was nerfed, I don't think that you could use Spellthief's Edge to its fullest potential in some match-ups. This starter is quite situational imo.

I still prefer Doran's Shield start because you will often be the one that wants to initiate, going towards your opponents to try to catch them and so you're susceptible to take (sometimes a lot of) damage. And since Thresh is very good at trading, Doran's Shield helps alot with that through passive and stats.

Have you ever tried Relic Shield start ? I think it could be an option too.

I have. I had it in my guide for awhile after it stopped triggering the execution on ranged attacks, but I felt like it was too hard to utilize it in soloq without a duo partner who will allow you to last hit creeps manually.

I hope you guys don't bash on the opinion of a low lvl non-ranked player like me. Basically I started my career as Thresh and enjoyed every game.

My experience with Relic Shield is pretty good. It made me hardier and most of the times the coordination with my ADC worked. Problem was that the gold income in late game was very inconsistent.

I recently started using Ancient Coin. The Manaregen is handy in my style as a very aggressive Thresh support, poking enemies with my Q. The late active also helped a lot. But I felt there could be more.

Spellthief's Edge: I didn't use it yet, but I feel it could be useful in my aggressive style. Extra dmg, extra gold and manaregen all sound good.

PS: Btw, I left a post regarding this topic on your Thresh Guide.

Now after some games and thoughts, I would consider Ancient Coin the best item on him. The Regen and late CDR are very helpful, and I don't know but did you guys also considered the other part of it's passive? 5 health per minion slain by a friendly champion near you. This is your early sustain while Thresh can concentrate on his role as aggressive support!

One thing that people haven't been mentioning is that thresh doesn't quite benefit from the AP or mana regen that this item gives. Thresh has a very low mana costing kit, and will only find himself oom if he perpetually throws out hooks left and right

Coin / dorans shield is the best start for soloQ.
In teamrankeds I tend to go relic shield start due you can communicate with adc.

Ruby crystal start is interesting one, give it a shot.
    Drop the spellthief imo :p

Ancient Coin is still the best gold-gen item for Thresh imo. Its active is the most useful one, and buying Relic Shield or Spellthief's Edge just to sell them later isn't really worth it. The thing is, Thresh has zero synergy with these items: he's ranged, so he doesn't get the bonus damage on execute, and his short AA range doesn't allow him to use Edge to its full potential.

Flay's passive makes it just as easy to last hit as the execution aspect on Spoils of War, and Relic Shield's line actually serves a purpose early/mid game, whereas Ancient Coin does nothing.

I forgot to mention Doran's Shield start which is still a solid option despite the nerf, but only if you're going for an early kill and need extra power; Your question was about gold items though, and Coin is the answer.
