Why did Dr. Mundo increase in popularity?

Seems like he just came out of no where. Does it have anything to do with the new defense tree in masteries?

The reason Dr. Mundo has gotten a lot popular is due to:

- The meta favouring manaless champions with built-in sustain
- Being able to use the Sunfire Cape + Spirit Visage combo while having good base damages
- The defence tree rewarding extra stats for building defence as well as boosting self healing
- The meta also favouring champions with catch abilities and mobility

This is also the reason why Rengar, Shyvana (though she has no sustain she has incredible scaling with resists and high base dmg) and Renekton are all currently favoured picks for the top lane. Currently Dr. Mundo and Rengar are the top two most contested picks for top lane in OGN.

EDIT: Just to make it clear how Dr. Mundo fits into the above points:

- has high base dmg and a strong slow, which is great for catching, and his ultimate gives him a good speed boost
- Sunfire Cape synergises with his and Spirit Visage synergises with his passive and ulimate
- Mundo builds tank and can be almost impossble to kill with his ultimate up due to the defence tree giving him more sustain at low health and extra resists

Yeah I understood what's good about as a champion, but didn't understand the meta shift as much. Thank you both for this :)

I'd like to mention, that the hardest counter for anyone ever is nasus -> mundo. Nasus will freefarm hardpants on a mundo. If you see mundo top in competitive play, most times you will see him vs'ing a nasus or a lane swap ;)

Also he always had a good jungle clear which is pretty important this season

I like his kit but doesnt fit my playstile, he can cleaver you down from mid to late game and has awesome passives.
build him tanky and when they are finishing you you just use ult and chase them, so cool.

Heh, I dont mind being wrong. I was just guessing based off other trends in the game. ;p I figured it was due to his jungling cause that was kind of his thing back in the day. I took my answer down.
