‎‎ ‎ Introduction

Hello & welcome to the final article of LEC 2023! For about 9 months we've been following the very best of European League of Legends. Many remarkable moments, 3 splits, an MSI and the very first Season Finals later, it's finally over for the year. And with it, the last LEC Fantasy Tournament of 2023 comes to a close. Let's take one final look at what transpired last weekend in Montpellier, and who crowned themselves Fantasy Master!

‎‎ ‎ Fantasy Leaderboards

Congratulations to Slava for winning the E-GO Season Finals Fantasy Tournament! They managed to hold on to the top of the table after claiming the spot last week. No more changes to their lineup were necessary as the G2 botlane and FNC's solo laners had a stellar final weekend. Slava even managed to deepen the gap between them and the runner up to 7.4 PTS. Well done!

Behind Slava the competition was very fierce, the rest of the top 10 all ranked very close to oneanother. At second place we have Rubenzito9! They rose from 5th to 2nd compared to last week. Having the most-points-earning-player Noah really helped!

Coming in third we have Fantasy mainstay Tapkick999. We've seen them so many times among the top of the leaderboards the past year. And now another top 3 finish, congrats!

Shout-out to everyone who participated and the rest of our top 10 in particular! We hope you've enjoyed the tournament, we hope to see you again soon!

‎‎ ‎ Saturday Recap: MAD Lions vs Fnatic

🏁 Game One

A fairly short game to open the series, but a bloody one. Carzzy backed, only for Hylissang to get caught immediately. First blood went to Noah. Both teams then tried to salvage the situation or deepen out the lead. Razork came bot to gift Noah additional kills, but crucially Carzzy got one back. And moments later Nisqy patiently caught out Noah for a nice shutdown. Then a couple minutes later a full 5v5 skirmish on the botside already. Fnatic came out the victors, but MAD quickly took revenge with a collapse onto Noah and Trymbi. Fnatic was in control though as they took the first 2 drakes and the Herald. With every play MAD would make, Fnatic would match them. MAD approached fights too split up, and Fnatic took maximum advantage of it with a 20 minute Baron. MAD didn't even manage to secure the drake that was spawning in the meantime. What followed was a Fnatic victory lap through MAD's base. Just over 24 minutes was enough for Fnatic to take the lead in the series.

🏁 Game Two

More of the same, though possibly even more chaotic. The early game was mostly battled out by the junglers, with especially Razork having a great game on Taliyah. At 15 minutes both teams were basically even, with Nisqy and Elyoya running things on the side of MAD while Razork was by far Fnatic's most fed member. Both teams traded blows, MAD found a good fight in mid, cracking open some towers while Fnatic did the same topside. When FNC managed to kill Elyoya, they utilised the small window to take the Baron alongside 2 kills from a beautiful Emperor's Divide by Humanoid. Fnatic tried sieging the midlane after, but ran into MAD's poke. Tension was palpable, waiting for MAD to pull the trigger, but it was Razork who came rocksurfing to MAD's demise with a pixel-perfect Seismic Shove onto Nisqy and Hylissang. Fnatic got priority onto the dragon, but Elyoya still managed to snatch the objective away. MAD bought some extra breathing room by preventing Fnatic from reaching soul-point.

Fnatic was in control but couldn't quite leverage their advantage. With midlane pushing they decided to start another Baron, and MAD was to slow to follow up. Then immediately Fnatic pulled the trigger again, with Razork catching Carzzy while the rest of his team cleaned up. Fnatic took a bit more time to break open MAD's base. It wasn't clean, but the gold lead had grown to over 10k so the end seemed inevitable. After 36 minutes Fnatic finally defeated MAD to bring them at match point.

🏁 Game Three

Fnatic went back to Karthus jungle for game 3, a pick we've seen with varying success last week already. Unfortunately for Fnatic the pick didn't seem to work out very well this time. Razork got killed in a chaotic skirmish in the river where MAD barely escaped with all their lives and 2 kills. Then little later Razork died again. The Karthus could handle the deficit well with its insane clear speed to keep gold even, though MAD was free to take the first few drakes. Fights were a giant mess though. Kill score even, but gold was on the right members for Fnatic. MAD just kept going for the dragons though. 5v5 for 3rd dragon ended up with Elyoya securing it and in the extended fight MAD eventually brought down Fnatic thanks to Hylissang's clean Alistar play.

A bit later Fnatic found a crucial pick onto Nisqy, and with Baron spawning things suddenly looked very interesting for them. MAD reluctantly took the 4v5, and K'Sante started doing K'Sante things while Carzzy's Kalista cleaned house. A pentakill for MAD's ADC in the most heroic fashion, at the most crucial time. MAD took the Baron for themselves, however the game wasn't over yet. MAD wanted the dragon soul, but Fnatic wouldn't let them without a fight. Both teams danced around the objective in a messy sequence, but finally MAD managed to catch Noah and secure the Ocean soul. Only thing left to do was to march down Fnatic's base now. 2-1, we had a series on our hands now.

🏁 Game Four

MAD had put confidence out of game 3. Kalista went over to Carzzy again and Elyoya picked Bel'Veth, a champion he had lots of success with last year but hadn't pulled out often this year. MAD's gameplan immediately became clear: dive botlane over and over so Noah can't play the game. Plays came with varying success though, clean execution was far to be found. Both teams kept kills more or less even, though most importantly Elyoya got quite fed. At second dragon a long extended skirmish resolved into Noah's Zeri finally starting to do Zeri things and it suddenly looked great for Fnatic. However, Nisqy and Carzzy remained alive and clutched the remaining fight into ultimately a 4 for 4. MAD took control of the game afterwards and took a chance at the Baron. Razork managed to get into the pit in time, but the Smite + Rend combo secured the objective. Fnatic had overstopped and got chased down mercilessly. Hylissang landed the chain CC and Fnatic got obliterated. Fnatic's resolve had finally broken as MAD took us to a game 5.

🏁 Game Five

Game 5 was a bit slower, but no less tense than previous games. More than before MAD got punished for their greed, though at 20 minutes the kill score was only 4-3. The game only really broke open around the 4th drake. MAD baited Fnatic into taking the free dragon, while they rushed the Baron on the other side of the map. MAD just barely secured it in time, but Fnatic hunted down and killed everyone but Nisqy immediately. Fnatic now more firmly in the lead, though MAD couldn't be counted out yet. Until the 31 minute dragon fight. Trymbi single-handedly won the teamfight by throwing both Carzzy and Nisqy out of their safety over the wall into Fnatic's waiting hands. MAD got aced and respawn timers were long enough for Fnatic to immediately look to end. After a gruesome series Fnatic denied MAD the reverse-sweep. And for the first time since 2021, Fnatic would play a grand finals!

‎‎ ‎ Sunday Recap: G2 Esports vs Fnatic

🏁 Game One

Grand finals time! A matchup for the ages between old rivals G2 and Fnatic. All ingredients were in place to make it a great closer to the LEC season.

G2 firmly took the lead through their botlane. Fnatic thought they found Hans Sama, but met their demise instead. When Yike came down next it went from bad to worse, though Noah managed to get a kill in return through alcove gaming. Fnatic tried to so hard, but their plans always barely fell short. Caps miraculously survived a gank, and Humanoid died instead while Yike made his entrance. Just when it started looking doomed for Fnatic, Noah and Trymbi showed their class by 2v2 killing the G2 botlane. The Aphelios started getting huge. In the next few minutes Fnatic managed to claw their way back to tie up the killscore to 6-6. Though in the ensuing teamfights G2's topside proved to be very strong. Especially BrokenBlade got lots of work done on K'Sante.

Fnatic secured the second drake, but Mikyx found a great flank angle to chain CC several Fnatic members, while BB did K'Sante things again and got a triple kill. G2 got strong enough to start the Baron, secured it, after which Yike landed a beautiful 4-man Magnet Storm to obliterate the arriving Fnatic. The gold lead suddenly accelerated from 3k to around 8-9k. G2 put their foot on the gas and didn't give Fnatic another chance to come back. Another magnificent Magnet Storm from Yike sealed the deal to win G2 game 1 in 27 minutes.

🏁 Game Two

G2 cooked again and locked in Lissandra support again, a counter to Trymbi's Rakan. What followed was an absolute stomp. First Razork got killed in his own jungle. Botlanes still traded 1 for 1, though an attempt to help from Razork minutes later made things worse. Hans Sama was 3/0/1 on Kai'Sa at 8 minutes. G2 just owned the skirmishes, as Hans but also Caps became monstrously fed. By 15 minutes G2's gold lead had grown to 10k. Fnatic could never put their foot down bar the occasional pick. Massive victory for G2 in 25 minutes.

🏁 Game Three

Fnatic with their backs against the wall, could they deny G2's clean sweep? It certainly didn't start well for them as Trymbi walked into a few G2 members and died at level 1. Fnatic didn't let it affect them too much as Razork got succesful ganks going early. Meanwhile Wunder solokilled BB up topside. FNC's toplaner proceeded to get dove by 3 G2 members, but survived. Meanwhile Fnatic managed to secure the first 2 drakes. Then the game slowed down for a while, with both teams even. Until Noah started popping off by showing his killer instinct on Kai'Sa. But when Fnatic finally found some momentum, G2 were right there to snap them back to reality. Even at a small deficit G2 convincingly won the 3rd dragon fight to swing gold back in their favour. But next fight Noah was left to freefire. He assassinated Hans Sama and Fnatic found a window to contest the Baron. Yike whiffed his hexflash and Razork secured it. G2 found themselves in an awkward spot and got deleted by Fnatic. G2 tried defending against Fnatic's Baron siege, but a small positional mistake by Hans Sama cost them the game. The edge of Razork's Nature's Grasp just barely hit Hans, but it was enough for Fnatic to pull the trigger and force their way to the nexus. 2-1 now, could Fnatic complete a miracle?

🏁 Game Four

What's a more fitting way for G2 to bounce back than with Hans Sama's Draven? Obviously Fnatic went all out to try and shut him down. It started well for Fnatic as Noah picked up a level 1 kill onto Mikyx. But barely a minute later in the 3v3 with junglers involved, Hans Sama already cashed in for the first time. Fnatic did well to stabilize the game, but after an unfortunate skirmish both Hans and Caps picked up some significant leads. Things went from bad to worse for FNC, with an ace at barely 13 minutes as sad conclusion. G2 could already smell the trophy as they ruthlessly continued bullying Fnatic. The latter put their efforts towards trying to shut down BrokenBlade, but the K'Sante was so far ahead Fnatic could only really tickle him. At 20 minutes G2's gold lead was over 10k. Fnatic couldn't even go near the Baron area as G2 secured it in peace. One clean ace later and G2 could make their victory lap around Fnatic's base. After winning Winter and Summer, G2 Esports has now also won Season Finals and will represent LEC at Worlds as our 1st seed. Congratulations!

There's no doubt anymore that G2 looked head and shoulders above the rest of the LEC in 2023. With victories in Winter, Summer and now the Season Finals, they won 3/4 of potential domestic titles. Even at MSI while it was a harsh tournament for the West, they had the best performance out of any European or American team. It seems G2 will once again be EMEA's best hope going into Worlds. All players have proven to be among the top of their role and as long as they continue their great form and don't overcook the drafts, G2 could upset a few Asian teams.

2nd Seed: Fnatic

Though it's been a hard year and Fnatic just fell short in the end, they can be proud of their growth throughout 2023. After numerous roster changes, Fnatic finally found a lineup that worked, made a miracle run to Season Finals and then got into grand finals. The potential of this team palpable. And considering these players haven't been together long compared to the competition, there's hope Fnatic might improve even more during the break before Worlds and make waves on the international stage. And even if Oscarinin's hand injury isn't fully healed by then, Wunder has proven to be a great substitute.

3rd Seed: MAD Lions

TOP LANE
Chasy
JUNGLE
Elyoya
MID LANE

BOT LANE

Hylissang

MAD's year has been a bit up and down, quite fitting considering their often chaotic playstyle. Runner-up in Winter, miracle run to become champion in Spring, disappointing at MSI and Summer. But they got their act together during Season Finals and put up a good showing even during their losses. These 5 players have so much experience and star power between them with names like Elyoya and Hylissang. Even rookie Chasy has shown great gameplay when it mattered most, namely his carry performances during Spring finals.
MAD Lions will most certainly be hungry for redemption at Worlds after their early exit last Worlds. I for one am confident in MAD to make EMEA proud.

4th Seed:

No one would've guessed BDS would be LEC's 4th best team. But they've certainly earned it. What this team lacks in big names, they make up with incredible discipline and good macro play. It earned them a spot in Spring finals, in which they were only a single game away from winning the whole thing. Now BDS gets another chance to represent EMEA at the international stage, though they'll first have to defeat North America's 4th seed Golden Guardians in the first even Worlds Qualification Series. A formidable foe that ended 2nd in Spring and went to MSI, though if recent form is anything to go by, not unbeatable.
Hopefully Team BDS will soon officially join G2, FNC & MAD at would be the org's first even Worlds!

‎‎ ‎ Conclusion

That's it for LEC 2023! Thank you for reading, we hope you had a great time following the best of European League of Legends. But don't fret, Worlds is right around the corner! Starting with the Worlds Qualifying Series between BDS and GGS on the 9th of October to determine the last Western Worlds participant.

And obviously a new E-GO Fantasy Tournament coming up when Worlds starts! We'll hope to see you there!
