And yet extremely smart of them at the same time...Why? Because it now works like LoL does, except where LoL was miles ahead by being F2P to start while offering additonal champs/skins/boosts etc HoN now plays catch up (and they're way behind)...

yeah i heard a while ago that hon was going to be free. and yes it follows exactly to lols shop now, except that you can get all champions for 10 dollars or so.
other than that though you can buy hons money system with real money. or playing games.

as for hon's monkey king they claim to have the concept originally posted back in 2010. he also uses a skillset they had for a different champion, just messed with it for the monkey king so they could release him when lol's was being released, with a healthy reminder of 'HURR WE AREN'T COPYING LOL WE HAD THE IDEA FIRST'

Give it a shot, but I highly highly doubt that HoN will ever be the same after Dota 2 has its release. League with its enormous base and differentiation through split gameplay mechanics and style won't directly compete with the 2nd generation dota games. For those whose background wasn't originally in wc3 dota, I strongly convince all of you to buy dota 2 or even reinstall that old copy of wc3.
